Jack Watts Thread

Recommended Posts

'We' includes him, doesn't it? What has he done/shown to arrest this culture?

Watts holds no rage for me - just a sad, soft, tiptoeing footballer.

Yes it does include him, so he's saying they all need to work on it.

Not that shocking really is it.

"Watts, a No. 1 draft pick, said that after years at the bottom of the ladder the team crumbled when things got tough."

entered into evidence....... team has mental weakness when it counts

"That sort of culture and that grit to be able to turn those things around when momentum goes against us, because at the moment we just crumble."

see above .......its between the ears

"We need a few blokes to stand up - myself included - and get us going the right way."

There you go son......the answer is staring you in the face......some watch....some do....whats it to be ??

4 years and waiting.

Pathetic article really, i thought it was funny hw he said we need people like Neil Balme, who of course was another failed coach of ours.

At least Balme got us into a couple of finals series. We were pretty close to a flag in '94.

His work at the Cats during their dynasty has been exemplary.

I've no real issue with the heat on Watts but there should be an equal amount of heat on the senior players.

Frawley, Garland, Howe, Jamar, Sylvia, Dunn and McKenzie continue to under perform when the going gets tough. And they continue to get off the hook. Collectively they don't put their hand up and show the way.

Apart from the odd game, when do any of the aforementioned players play well, when the team gets well beaten? They go missing. These 8 players all played in '186' and they never seem to come under proper scrutiny. They don't do enough.

They all have to be put on notice on Saturday night (by the match committee). Dunn is out injured.

4 of the above mentioned players won't be at the club next year.

Let's start the cull now.

So he should of, he had a lot more to work with, and he has been really good at Geelong but its not like he has had to turn anything around,Jack the blind miner would have been equally successful.

It's about time Watts decided if he wants to be remembered as a great/good/average/ordinary footballer.

It's about time Watts said to the coach, I want to play in the forward line, I want to play CHF, I want to show the football world what I've got and that I'm not just a privileged kid skating my way through my career.

Wats has now said two things that are at odds with what you expect from a professional sportsman. The first, winning isn't everything the second that we lack a winning culture and leadership; in other words he doesn't think he has the quality to lead, because he's looking for it elsewhere.

If the whole team is looking at someone else to lead, no one ever will.

FFS. Read the actual article and what Watts actually said.

He basically said we have problems, and we ALL need to work on it.

It's not world shattering stuff, and hardly offensive.

Why is Watts fronting the media so much lately? Wheres our so called leadership group? I find it strange...

Im finding a lot about Melbourne rather screwy presently. Anyone would think Nat Jones is the captian half the time

And so we should have been, we had a great side and if it was the same side at any other club we would have won it, it was just the usual crap that we just didn't have the faith and leadership to get us across the line. The loss in Perth was disgraceful.

The day before the game the players were wandering aimlessly around Perth with a number of them in a pinball parlour; amateurs.

Talks cheap stuie, some do, some talk about doing, Watts should just get on with the job try to take up one of the positions he talks about and let his actions do the talking.

I don't want to hear him talk about all, needing to work on it, I want him to just stfu and do it.

I've stuck up for him for too long, he needs to get off his as and show us if he can, or can't play.

Robbie et al I reckon Stuie is right. Watts is saying that he and others need to work on their leadership skills. He isn't just bemoaning the lack of leaders - he's quite rightly recognizing the need to become one himself. I don't see why you're criticizing him for that. He was crap on Sunday but he did some good stuff last year; plenty worse, anyway.

Proof will be in the pudding, but I pray that he succeeds.

I don't disagree he needs to pull the finger out, but a fair few others do too, and most of them deserve more pressure than Watts.

It's just ridiculous how many in this thread (and Cummings himself) have either deliberately misunderstood what was said or don't even know.

All he said is that we have a lot of work to do to reach the standards of the great clubs and players. Can't disagree with that.

All the senior players - NB: Sylvia, Frawley, Jamar, Garland, Jones and Watts in particular should call the team together, like the hand bag Cats did and say "enough is enough. This is what we all demand. Hard uncompromising footy". It sure as hell turned their image and fortunes around....softies to Premiers in just a year or two.

Big question is - do any of our guy really want success, or would they just like success?

Show us your answers Satruday night!!

PS: and frankly I am sick and tired of reading how well we have been training, and more so what a great preseason we had - please remind me how many of ?six games we won or came close in??

I've heard so much [censored] come out of the mouths of our players over the last, God nows how long, I'm just sick of it, talk, talk, talk, stuff that, go out and do it. I don't need Watts or any other player to say they don't have any on field leaders I , and all others can see that, I expect they will look after that themselves and provide it.

I'm not just talking about last week, I'm sick of the players coasting through their careers waiting for something to happen.

This list of guys are just coasting but are meant to be our core players:

Jamar, Sylvia, Frawley, Garland, Byrnes, Dunn.

They have slipped under the radar due to our young captains, young list, and high expectations/hopes on our young players.

Everyone needs a rocket, and these guys are the ones who should be lighting it rather than hiding behind Viney, Grimes, and Watts.

Agree with this A LOT, apart from the bit where you've done a Scotty Cummings and misquoted Watts again...

One. You like quoting numbers.

One final series, on the back of Northey's work...and then he ran down the club.

Lazy. Self satisfied AND NEVER COACHED AGAIN.

I agree with your core, but put Watts in there too. Byrnes has played one game for this club, Watts has had five years.....

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol
