The Sheahan Top 50

Mike is just another mug with an opinion, the only difference between him and us is he gets paid to post his and the rest of us do it for fun. That said, it's not really surprising that most mugs wouldn't have a Melbourne player in their 50.

These players will come into consideration this time next year

Byrnes

Clark

McDonald

Frawley

Garland

Jones

Viney

Jamar (is already there... ask any other ruckman who has contested centre circle against him)

Howe

Trengove

Wow, now there's some optimism. Missing some reality.

Viney will be considered a top 50 player after his first year?

Garland and Byrnes? lol..c'mon now.

Jamar is not a Top 50 player. He's not even close. He might win a truckload of taps but he skips the part of putting them to the advantage of his teammates, and he doesn't/can't do anything else.

Jones, Clark and Frawley are possibilities for this time next year. Somewhat remote ones. The following year could look different, but who can look that far ahead in terms of development, especially when it comes to our club?

Whilst I love the optimism I would say there's a 5% chance even 3 of them will make it.

If garland even makes a top 50 I will eat my shorts

I'd pick Swan before Cotchin,Selwood,Watson and Dangerfield.

Those 4 are very good footballers but haven't produced what Swan has the last 4 seasons.Runner up to Judd in the Brownlow, won his own Brownlow the next year and had a great year last year.

Very short sighted Mike.

Swan butchers the ball which is why he isn't often tagged. Swan averaged just about more possessions than any other player in history, but his team was disappointing for a side that was predicted to win the flag by many.

Swan has been in my dream team for years, so I watch him closely, but I get why he's not rated as highly by some. Getting your hands on it is a major skill that is underrated, which is why I rate him, but using it is also significant.

That said, he'd be in my top 10.

I'd have Jones in there before both Rich and Martin and probably also Enright who I think is on the wane.

Otherwise, Sheahan gets most of the right names in there save for six or seven oddities in his ordering.

It's about time people on this site wised up about Naitanui. He's a definite top 50er and a lock for top 10 in two season's time. No.1 beckons as well. The boy is just getting warmed up.

It's a PREDICTION.

That said, I wouldn't have Jones, Martin or Enright in. I can understand Rich.

EDIT: the prediction comment is not aimed at you, but more the angst of some others.

Hmm not so sure about his top 50, then again its only an opinion and you cant please everybody.

I would have had Jones in. He was a standout all year against all opposition. Nat Fyfe probably didnt deserve to be in due to injury, I mean if he plays half a year and gets in surely Clark is just as worthy?

Fair enough. Spots 40 - 50 are probably a lottery between about 15-20 players. That's where it gets subjective.

If we can't get three of Grimes, Watts, Clark, Jones, Toumpas and Viney consistently making this list in two seasons time we'll be a bottom four club for the next decade.

I don't include Trengove in that group (yet) as I haven't seen anything that would indicate an ability to reach that level. Frawley has gone down in my estimations over the past 24 months and not sure he'll be anything other than serviceable.

Love the optimism Wayne, but if any more than three of those make next years list, I'll have a heart attack from the shock.

It's not about 2012 performance it's about 2013 prediction. He doesn't think Fyfe was top 50 in 2012 persay just thinks he'll be top 50 in 2013..

It amazes me that not many see Swans disposal - agree 100% on his disposal and I think the commentators are dazzled by the continual 40 plus output and dont look at what he does with the pill.

Mike has always been a harsh judge of Melbourne players. I guess so that he can't be accused of being biased.

Dangerfield no. 3 in the comp this year according to Mike. I'd probably have him around 8-10, either way it makes our decision to pick Cale Morton at #4 in the same draft that Dangerfield went at #10 so so painful.

Daniel Wells has had one good season in 10, yet gets a gig.

And how could he have Cloke in instead of Jack Reivwolt.

Cloke is the most overrated footballer going around.

Got to disagree with you 316.

Cloke is a faaaaaar better player than JR.

JR is usually well held by Chip when we play the toiges. Cloke, not so much.

I know there is more to it than a one-on-one player comparison, but that sums it up in this case.

For everybody having a go at Mike for being anti-MFC, you might be interested that he is a MFC member (unless he resigned recently). I recall going in with him on the tram to a MFC AGM and he certainly is not anti us like Caro. The problem is that he actually got most of it right and we don't like to hear it.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
