Interchange cap confirmed for 2014

Just bite the bullet and remove the interchange altogether. 7 subs, no interchange. Bam! Problem solved.

Will be hard for young teams to even compete, they ll be run off theyre feet.

Would hate to be a player performing the 2014 pre season at any club.

Geez I hope you're not serious....

Geez I hope you're not serious....

I am, although I pretty much pulled the number of subs from nowhere.

Hope they dont make it 80.

160 was the average last year, maybe something like , cap it to 120, which makes a bit more sense

Mystified. 80 rotations just seems incredibly low for the modern game.

It's time for Vlad to go now. His expiry date is well and truly up.

I just can't get over the condescending attitude he displays. I can't find the quote right now, but he said something about "is there something in their Wheaties today?" regarding the coaches negative reaction to the rule. That was it. Nothing about them being professional and knowledgeable people who might just know enough about the game to have a valid opinion (as opposed to a hack who had a short career and then went in to admin). Just dismiss them as being cranky children and move on. The guy is a joke and a disgrace to the game. The sooner we are rid of him the better.

i certainly hope when vlad moves on, his successor will remove some of these ridiculous rules that are being put in place (unlikely i know but there's always hope), they're ruining the game and it is turning many people away from this great sport!

Vlad is a corruption to the AFL, never seen a sport change so many rules. He has ruined AFL and given it a bad name around the sporting world! this guy is a deadset [censored] of the highest order! He is cancer to afl society!

Like anyone who has been in power too long he is making more and more outrageous decisions and will continue to do so until the groundswell gathers momentum.

I might be by my lonesome, but I disagree with the coaches and their whining. I'm happy to have less rotations, more fatigue and the game opening up. Six or 7 years ago 40 rotations was the norm. I'll also get to see the better players on the ground for longer.

It works for me.

It works for me as well.I was all for 2 subs and 2 interchange but this effectively does the same thing. Now to get rid of the runner, my other pet hate.

Think it's more the amount of change than the change itself. Going from an AVERAGE of 160 to a limit of 80 in one season is a bit over the top, especially for something the coaches clearly don't think is a good idea to begin with.

I like it too, although I don't really like the arbitrary numbers being used.

Could work well for us .

We will have a pretty tall ,mobile team that should be able to take marks ,and you would expect more long kicks as teams fatigue .

I think I agree with Ben Hur which can happen on rare occasions.

It will stop the rolling ruck ,the maul ,the flooding etc that has made the game a bit too congested for my liking.

Hate Vlads attitude and the way he has dictated rather than consulted but ultimately i think it will be a better spectacle for the change .

This is the issue. No problem with the concept of a cap, but the number does not seem realistic. Players are going to be run into the ground and squads are going to be stretched to their limit. In an effort to make the game more entertaining, the opposite could result.

What I don't get is how they came to the conclusion that to reduce congestion around packs, they should limit interchange.

I understand their thinking in terms of tiring players out, but why that particular rule change?

Who hear plays local footy?

Who complained in 2008 that 80 interchanges wasn't enough?

The game will survive the interchange limitations but I agree at some stage we need to look at how we get players not to run so hard without them being completely fatigued as the answer.

One consideration is with 18 teams we've spread the talent too thin and thus given athletes a chance over footballers

Totally agree. The interchange rotation has been fully exploited and needs to be rained in. Will make games on the smaller grounds like docklands and scg more bearable to watch.

I'm ambivalent about the change but it spells the end for guys without 'engines'. It doesn't necessarily mean we'll see more of the better players either, just those who can run a game out. Good players will still get tagged. Perhaps more so by blokes with less football ability but an ability to run for certain.

It would be good if they gave the reasoning behind the number. Or has it just been pulled from a hat? Transparency would do Vlad the world of good ATM. It's what he lacks badly.

SO they spend 10 years trying to speed the game up. Ignoring fans who complain we are becoming like basketball now they are trying to put the genie back in the bottle.

They are idiots. And unfortunately when you run a monopoly you can get away with what you like, Until people start switching off because they are sick of the duplicitous behaviour, constant rule changes, uneven playing field, rigged fixture, poor revenue sharing from stadium deals, ridiculous and inconsistent tribunal decisions, poor drug policies, lousy telecasts and corporate buffoonery.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
