Anyway, Liam quit the club rather ignominiously and it seems his life continued to spiral down since then. Meanwhile, the people most responsible for managing his welfare (and other player's welfare) while with the club were unceremoniously shown the door a year ago. Apparently in bad blood. Our then coach and football manager no longer have any direct role with the players. Our entire leadership group has changed. Our recruiting philosophy has changed from 'leaping for the speccie' to 'following the percentage play'.

Perhaps the most important thing to note is that however things were back then, there's very little in common with it now.

The only constant is that this year, like last year and the five before that, will be Colin Sylvia's breakout year.

he is an adult who makes and has to live by his choices

had a great network in melb, a juicy contract, friends and a very supportive club

choose to walk away which hasnt proved to be a great decision and he has to live with that decision

If you'd ever worked or live in an impoverished aboriginal community I've no doubt your tone would be different. The mere fact that he got to us at all was a miracle worked by some very committed Magpies. The club recruits young men and owes them the same support they offered Liam. I hope that support is continuing. He "walked" out because his community went into full melt down and he chose family over football. Something most other bogans playing the sport would never do. We owe the aboriginal community of this country much more than an apology. Maybe spend some time looking into the divisions and problems that the white mining boom is causing whilst you consider Liam's predicament.

Maybe you could spend some time by telling us what divisions and problems you're alleging do actually exist.

The last time I looked (physically on mine sites) these companies were doing a fantastic job of engaging communities through employing and training local aboriginals.

Yes sorry Jack, I was referring to the first part of your post. Simply suggesting the Alice Springs News as a good, balanced news source.

Notable is the description of the jury as being mostly white. The people of Alice Springs, black and white, are sick of the drug fuelled violence in town and want to put a stop to it. Further to this however is the frustration with the apparent leniency when it comes to sentencing. There is a lot of sympathy with the Police at the moment who are doing all they can only to have judges (seemingly in locals eyes) letting those prosecuted off lightly. The local jail is overflowing with a obviously high number of indigenous prisoners and the situation in Yuendumu would appear to have no end in sight (For those of you that care, while the recent chapter of this story goes back to a terrible death a few years ago, for the groups/families involved, the origins of this feud goes back decades). What this means for Liam, I'm not sure, but there are plenty of people involved in this case, who want him to be made an example of.
