Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Wasn't pedo's role defined as a link between ruck and forward? Would he be playing in a pocket?

I don't see him rucking more than 20%. He'll be sharing the back-up duties with Clark. And when he's not rucking he'll be the third banana in the forward-line. The pocket position simply signifies the third tall role. He won't be anchored there.

Very short at 193cm for a ruckman. I know he did fill in a bit at North where he could use his bulk, but I don't think 'muscling in' is allowed anymore in ruck duels.

The way the game is played nowadays, most players will get relatively equal time on the ground. I would not at all be surprised to see Toumpas on the bench to start round 1.

Many high picks start their first game on the bench. Nothing unusual about it.

One game last year, both of our captains started on the bench.

On paper and putting aside strategy or a game plan, I see it as the best 18 start on the field, Toumpas definately in that.

Don't like the set up as it isn't really as the game is played anymore. I like to list the primary role of the player so I don't miss any. The brackets hint at a secondary role they will probably play.

Tall Fwds (3): Clark (BUR), Dawes, and Pedersen (BUR).

Small Fwds (2): Byrnes (MID) and Blease (MID).

Midfield Rotation (10): Jones, Viney, Rodan (FWD), Howe (FWD), Grimes (DEF), Nicholson (DEF), Trengove, McKenzie (Tag), Sylvia (FWD), and Tapscott (FWD).

Tall Defs (3): Frawley, McDonald, and Garland.

Small Defs (2): Terlich and Dunn (MID).

Tween Def (1): Watts.

Primary Ruck (1): Jamar.

And I don't care about the sub - switch it around. I don't like the idea of a 'designated sub' - if an injury occurs their use will be compromised as the games wears on as they are not used to large amounts of game time.

I have decided against giving Toumpas a game in Rd 1 as I want to make a statement about earning games that is probably a few years overdue (and pointless now probably...).

I like the fact that this 22 has 13 players who can run through the middle.

Jamar & Gawn willl play in the same team. You cant have a 200cm + monster sitting in your reserves.

I like your thinking but I reckon it will be Spencer. He will be fitter. He has been training well. He showed real improvement and Neeld did comment on his "second efforts". Could be the surprise packet of 2013.

In any event it is surprising to me that neither Gawn nor Spencer gets much of a mention in projected sides for next year.

Gotta love the "Spencil" He is now a very large man and I love his aggression

Just a bit of relief ruckwork against the oppositions second stringer. It will be fine. And depending on matchups Clark will also play a role.

Pretty happy witrh this team but would make several minor changes depending on match ups

Nicho to the back pocket swap with Tappy

Roden starts on a HFF

Sylvia starts on Bench

Dawes and Clarke to swap

Pederson to do relief ruck duties where required

One other comment, Trengove would want to fire up like a box of rusty detonators in a cracker factory because competition will be fierce! I also agree No Davey I reckon his pace is gone. My hunch is that he will start at Casey get injured and retire mid year. Strauss will also be lucky to get a game I believe! Dunne, Terlich, Nev Jetta I hope can remain injury free and provide options all of which are in the mix as well as Spencil.

That will do for a start.!

Oh one other thing Cale Morton to languish at Sth Fremantle magoos

I'm interested to note Jamar as first named ruck in most selections. He probably deserves it on his history, but coming off injury late 2012 he was a pale shadow of what was his brief peak. Either he improves on that or there will be a hellish difference between the best 22 Round 1 and the best 22 Round 22.

B Nicholson Frawley Garland

HB watts McDonald Grimes

C Toumpas trengove Howe

HF perdersen Clark Sylvia

F Blease Dawes Brynes

R jamar Jones Viney

Int. Mckenzie Dunn Sellar Sub Rodan

Emg Spencer Bail/Terlich Davey

Sellar I know is not popular but I really think his best is still to come and he seemed to grow in confidence in his body and himself the longer the year went on, he just needs to have others have confidence in him.

Rodan could possibly be a specialised sub but going by reports on training he could possible be too valuable to us to only be the sub so unsure about him.

Davey, if fit i would have him in the best 22 but i'm not convinced he will feature in many games next season but it is only early in the pre-season.

Evans also if he can sort out his injuries could push his way into the 22.

We would not select/recruit/draft a player to fill a specialist sub role.

Two players I will be interested where they play this year.

1. Grimes. Of course he will be in the team but will be interesting to see just where he starts on the team sheets now that on the field brigade has Toumpas and Viney in there and you can't leave out Trenners and Jones in the centre. Then there is McKenzie. Will Frank go back to the HBF?

2. Sellar. I would rather have Sellar in the team than Dunn. I missed the whole second half of the year due to travel and am putting myself through the pain of watching a game every couple days. Sellar goes ok in the backline and I think his disposal is quite good. Also, more and more teams this year will have a similar setup to ours with a back up ruckman up forward and I look at most teams confused as to who will take that player. I think Lynden has had enough time to make a spot his own. If people want him there for his kicking skills I believe Watts can handle that with Tappy.

I think that Garland can play above his height but would struggle on a ruckman in comparison to our Riv went about it. I worry thinking how Col will go playing on say a Hampson, Hale, Cox etc. He should be in the team but playing on the medium small forwards.

Its really too hard to select a best 22 until we know who we are playing anyways but I do like the look of everyones teams when we have a full squad to pick from. Im officially on the off season band wagon, same as this time every year!

Can I throw something a bit different out there if everyone is so keen on Dunn??

Watts to start on the wing ala one runner up M Richardson in his last year. Just let him take one side of the G and run up and down it taking grabs from the back line and hitting Mitch / Christoper lace out all season.

Dear diary.... jackpot

Aside from the fact that he has already had a long career, he was in the LG last year and would be near on the most versatile player at the club. Makes bad decisions but who doesn't? I think he will be better when we are better, same with Frawley, who had a worse year than Garland in my eyes.

Garland doesn't seem to have time or composure with the bal, but I would keep him because of the huge pressure he has been under from the opposition. I am hoping his best years are still to come. Needs to sharpen up on his skills though.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
