Who I am? A guessing quiz.

Unless my memory is playing tricks with me. Wasnt the trots (harness racing) and the dishlickers racing also held there?.

I don't think so. The Melbourne Speedway (Motordome) became Melbourne Olympic Park in preparation for the 1956 Olympics. The Harness Racing was at the showgrounds and the greyhounds were in a different area of Olympic region. That was changed to Broadmeadows, as the Melbourne Greyhound track fell by the construction of city link.

One of my sons (Andy aka Demonland) was in an Under 14 relay team in the Vic champs at Olympic Park one evening and, after winning their semi final, were told their final race was 2½ hours away so as their team manager I thought I'd teach the boys a few finer points in life and took them across to watch the dishlickers going around next door. I thought it might inspire them to run faster but it backfired. Almost missed the start of their race and then finished out of a place. The lads at least learned something about betting and the odds so the evening wasn't wasted.

Anyhow, time for the next and last quiz for the year before we all come back refreshed for 2013:-

Who am I ... 1st Clue:

I spent my first two years at the club playing mainly with the Under 19s.

I am ... ?

I'll have another guess at Nick Smith (2to4). Only because he is bigger than Callery and played mostly at Sandy (when he got on the field)

Silly me! You said under 19's

This is like a lottery. I'll punt on David Cordner simply because he was part of the dynasty. My vague recollection is that he played a couple of years at u19 s, but this may be wrong. I know he loomed as a potential star at that level.

So it's time for another clue -

Who am I ... 1st Clue:

I spent my first two years at the club playing mainly with the Under 19s.

I am ... ?

Who am I ... 2nd Clue:

Although I never won one, I did finish in the top four in the voting for the "Bluey" in 3 of my first seasons at the club.

I am ... ?

Glenn Lovett, Wells and Greg Healy all won the Bluey.

What are you trying to say??? I blew it?

A helpful observation ? :o

I think Stingrays needs some competition.

Yes indeed it is Chris Connolly who I included in response to those who complained that there was too much ancient history in the quiz.

Here are all of the clues and it's a pity we didn't make it all the way to the 4th Clue because that would have been the real stunner:

Who am I ... 1st Clue:

I spent my first two years at the club playing mainly with the Under 19s.

I am ... ?

Who am I ... 2nd Clue:

Although I never won one, I did finish in the top four in the voting for the "Bluey" in 3 of my first seasons at the club.

I am ... ?

Who am I ... 3rd Clue:

A knee injury ended my playing career but I soon turned my hand to coaching. I coached junior teams and then was thrust into the limelight when I was asked to coach in place of the regular coach who was ill. The team I coached in this one off game scored a famous narrow victory.

I am ... ?

Who am I ... 4th Clue:

More lately, I've been associated with a dark and sinister place called "The Vault" where we plot the downfall of great empires.

I am ... Chris Connolly

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
