IMO we would be better off trying to trade #4 for #12 and #14 from GWS.

Knightmare on Bigfooty has Menzel, Membrey, Vlaustin, Stringer, Garlett and Kennedy in the 14-20 range.

I like the parallel thinking outside the square, but doubt GWS would trade our pick back to us.. Two mid first round picks would be an absolute dream!

I say keep 4 and have a crack at picking a good MFC 10 yr plus player. Bugger the idea of trading it off for a couple of lower picks, pick a certainty or as best as there can be.....

Pick 4 options

Jimmy Toumpas - SA - the pace, the flair, the confidence. Oustanding 2012 u/18's champs.

<likely will go at pick 3>

Sam Mayes - SA - taller mid. All class. Reminds me of a youn Lenny hayes. Knows how to kick a goal.

Oliver Wines (my choice) - Bendigo - gets the footy over and over again. A hunter. Think Matthew Boyd. A 10-yr plus player.

I agree I'd rather pick what we want on the menu, not wait to see what's left over; there's always a lot of reasonable picks in the teens but I'd rather have one top liner than 2 Gysberts.

How many times have we been told that its a super draft only to go back a few years later to find that the whole draft was propped up by a few stars at the top and some not too bad's in the middle. Two or three years ago every player up to pick 40 was either a Judd, Buddy or Hodge; didn't quite work out that way though.

i can 100% g/tee that a deal was done with regard to pick 13. it makes no sense that melb would give away pick 13 as well as 3 for hogan. my belief is that melb has struck a deal with GWS where melb will get the player of their choice at pick 4. Whether that is toumpas, o'rourke, or anybody else. my bet is that toumpas will be in a melb jumper if thats who they want.

Nice first post if you're right

Whilst we're all 100-feet away with the putter in our hands.... Wines at 4 (I've been told to lock it in by HG), Membrey at 20.

Sounds good to me, would be happy with that, whilst I want a flag I want us to be a hard side people hate to play against knowing they are never going to die wondering. So from the clips of these two they possess the goods to get us there along with Viney, Trenners, Jordie, Clark, Jones, Frawley, Tappy & Hogan

Regular 22 for next 8 - 10 years

Clark, Hogan, Viney, Trengove, Grimes, Jones, Wines(Potentially) Howe, Blease, Watts, Macdonald, Frawley

Not a bad look, as individuals they are all great players. Now we need some solid teamwork to kick in

I don't think we need another player like Wines.

We have Viney & Jones as inside mids. Another would make us a bit slow through the guts.

I would like too see our future rucks as Grundy & Gawn! So Grundy if we can get him.

Need to upgrade back too pick 3 or have GWS willing too pass for some type of compensation.

If not I would like too use Pick 4 on a player who can break the lines.

If we get our big man stocks right for the next 10 years. Midfielders will evolve!

Any two of Jamar, Martin & Spencer need too move on.

We would surely keep it wouldn't we??? we need to atleast keep one of our top 5 picks in what is considered "the best draft in history" and we should use this on O'rourke or Wines as we really still need some quality mids. i'm not fussed as to which of these 2 we get but i would prefer one of them to anybody else, unless toumpas is still available, which is higly unlikely :(

The only reason for us to trade it would be if we were to get a current superstar!

Pick 4 is a keeper. Here is the last 6 years pick 4's.

2006 Matthew Leuenberger ... had a standout 2011, and injury ruined 2012. Will be very very good.

2007 Cale Morton ... hmmm a promising start, now on the fringe

2008 Hamish Hartlett ... a very good 2012.

2009 Anthony Morabito ... injury cruelled his start to AFL. Showed strong signs.

2010 Andrew Gaff ... all class. The Eagles are smiling.

2011 Will Hoskin Elliott... positive signs. Behind some other GWS rookies but had a few good games at end of 2012.

If you look at our stats over the last ten rounds of 2012, you will find that we began to match it with other teams for contested ball. Jones, Magner, McKenzie and Trengove really improved in this area in the 2nd half of the season. We have already added Viney and will probably develop Gysberts in and under also.

Our need is for players 5 - 7 metres away from the stoppage who receive the ball from the in-and-under players, who are highly skillful under pressure or when free and can either deliver with efficiency, or can run and carry. At the moment only Blease and Watts fill this category. Sylvia showed he might (oh please, please please!!) deliver in 2013. Dom Barry has been delieberately selected an outside runner and we need to bring in one more.

Oliver Wines. No

Jesse Lonergan. No

Jimmy Toumpas. Yes, but probably won't get him

Tim Mayes. Yes

Jonathon O'Rourke. Yes

Josh Kelly. Yes

Tim Broomhead. Possible

Matthew Crouch. Possible.

Nick Graham. Possible

Jesse Lonergan. No (pick 45 ish)

Jimmy Toumpas. Yes, but probably won't get him. Will go #2 or #3

Tim Mayes. Yes <You mean SAM MAYES >… very good but 2012 tappered off.

Jonathon O'Rourke. Yes (likely pick 6-10)

Josh Kelly. Yes. 2013 draft eligible

Tim Broomhead. Possible (I am a big wrap on this kid …maybe at 20 ish but could get at pick 45 ish)

Matthew Crouch. Possible. 2013 draft eligible

Nick Graham. Possible (pick 20 ish)

Wines is the best choice by a mile. He and Jack Viney are good mates. This is what footy is about. Some of my best mates are the guys I played 12 years with playing A grade amateur footy. It’s the game and enjoying the competitive nature. Oliver Wines is all upside.

Wines is a 10yr+ player. Leader. Good character. Wins the footy. Smart. Vic country boy (no "go home factor"). No prior injuries or risks. Reminds me of players such as Jobe Watson, Joel Selwood, Sam Mitchell. 186cms. Physically ready to go. Competitive.

Too many inside mids ?- you are joking - Mitchell, Lewis, Sewell, Hodge all play in the Hawks midfield. J Kennedy, Hannebery, Bolton & Jack, all play in the Swans midfield. We can have Jones, Viney, Wines, Mckenzie (plus Grimes, Trengrove, Sylvia). Add Dean Towers at pick 20, or Tim Broomhead to add outside run.

It's an easy call from me … Pick 4 – Oliver Wines (Nth Ballarat).

Pardon my lack of knowledge but do Macrae and or Kennedy fit into this group and are either likely to be available at the right place? Both have sounded good in reviews.

Yes, but I just sifted through and gave insights on the candidates that looked strong to me.

I just watched clips of Mcrae

I have gone from favoring Toumpas to O'Rourke to Mcrae in the last 24 hours.

I think he would compliment us best so my order of pref is now Mcrae, O'Rourke, Toumpas, Stringer, Wines

Regular 22 for next 8 - 10 years

Clark, Hogan, Viney, Trengove, Grimes, Jones, Wines(Potentially) Howe, Blease, Watts, Macdonald, Frawley

A new day huh?

Toumpass is the dream.... I am simply not buying into Wines.

He would be great if we didn't already have multiple one paced mids.

Jones, Viney, Trengove, Mckenzie, Magner.

Plus Grimes who has class but lacks genuine pace.

Adding Wines over does it for mine, our side is desperate for pace and game winning ability.

Other than Blease and occassionally Sylvia we don't have any real game breakers... Wines is not a game breaker, he is a workman like midfielder... A better version of Mckenzie/Magner.

Posted

We were soooo slow and boring this year....

Being a "tough" side requires a possibility of dangerous, fast, goal kicking mids to compliment the toughness.

Hawks:

Rioli, Whitecross, Suckling, Burgoyne, Shiels, Smith.

Swans:

Jetta, Goodes, Jack, Shaw.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
