The Free Agency/Trade/Draft Rumour File

Featured Replies

So, can someone who knows the Free Agency Rules better than I do clarify this for me?

Under free agency rules, Goddard can only submit his best offer from a rival club for the Saints to match.

Ok,... So hypothetically, Essendon could offer Goddard say $800k for 3 years and Goddard might want to go to Essendon. But MFC could put an offer down of $810k for 3 years.... and he doesn't want to go to us... that statement indicates that Goddard has to place the best offer, not his preferred destination for the Saints to match.

Does that sound a bit odd to people? or has Jon Pierek misinterpretted things? Surely the interpretation as it's described would mean that Freo can't be discounted by those players not wanting to move West, especially if they have the coin to safely put in the best offer?

listening to this on radio this week (afl honcho) - he has to submit the best offer to the Saints not his preference, to me that seems fair.

We'd have to trade for Ray. Personally I don't see why we would, but if Neeld and Co see a role for him... At least he isn't Dawes.

I'd rather a gorilla forward taking 5 marks and scoring 1.2 goals a game than Ray.

So lets say Rivers wants to go to the Cats, who have offered $350,000.00 over 3 Yrs. And the Hawks have offered $400,000.00 over 2 Years.

And Melbourne offers $350,000.00 over 2 Years?

What then?

Rivers is unrestricted isn't he?. He just goes where he wants.

I haven't researched this but my understanding is that Goddard's manager and the Stingers lodge the proposed contract with the AFL and St Kilda and the Saints have 3 days to match it. No other club can enter the negotiations at this point.

Tim Harrington was just on SEN and Robbo asked if we were interested in Farren Ray. The answer was yes and other players like him. Not sure what others think but I am worried with most of the players we seem to be after.

Strike me pink. Pick 118 for him, and they'd have to throw in Riewoldt.

I do not believe this is the case. He can pick whichever offer suits him and this is the offer the Saints have to match. Otherwise the entire point of FA is lost.

Yep.

I see, his choice. So he doesn't have to present back to us then? Unless he wants to stay, but wants more?

your correct - my mistake, just checked the AFL website - he can choose, seems I can't believe what the AFL people say. a bit more careful next time.

We would also be mad not to be talking to Clinton Young.

Exactly the type we need and out of contract.

Agree!

Rivers is much much better than Garland and light years ahead of McDonald, who still is not a bad player. Let me put it this way Rivers on song makes it look easy a lot like Matt Scarlett ,which is why I can see Geelong are into him big time, what concerns me though is, in pursuit of other's we neglect our own! Riv our Garry Hardeman of the new age> Let go at your peril !!

Keeper absolutely!

Where did you get those figures from?

Those figs are probably not far off the mark. Ball's was public as he nominated for the draft but only signed for two years. He will be on a lower amount from 2013 onwards you would imagine.

Correct. The Saints responded within 4 hours saying they wouldn't match it.

Out side runners. We are after depth, to force the kids to push themselves harder to make it. Game come too easy at the MFC.

Hopefully that is now the past tense, CAME too easily. I think that MN has already shown that that stopped after 2011.

Mark my words.

Something is going to happen this week.

Trade week goes for 3 weeks so I am still betting that the busiest week will be the last.

But yes, Monday morning will be record breaking for Demonland...

I have heard rumours of O'bama wanting to be our midfield coach maybe he means that. Can we get a centre clearance? YES WE CAN!!

$1.11 on Deesbet. Partial meltdown $1.02

I have a class that ends at 10:45 Monday. I dare say that there will be some busywork given between 10 and 10:15am.

Axis of Bob: Sacrificing education for personal football interests. It doesn't make me feel dirty at all.

I don't think demo land will go into meltdown if we take vineyard with pick 3 , meltdown will be if we let him go to Goldcoast.....

I think the clubs phone lines would also go into meltdown

WOWEE! You're right!

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
