Tom Couch - runner up in JJ Liston Trophy

KC from Casey

Major kudos to Casey and Melbourne players at VFL's JJ Liston Trophy night with Tom Couch finishing runner up on 19 votes to Werribee's Ben Ross who polled three votes in the final round to win with 20. It was a fantastic result for the Demon rookie who missed five games during the season but only one due to injury. The rest, including the final game were when he was either on AFL duty or as an emergency with Melbourne.

Coach Brett Lovett was awarded the VFL Coach of the Year title, after leading Casey to top spot on the Peter Jackson VFL ladder in season 2012 in his first season in the role, and after a number of experienced departures in the off season for the Scorpions.

Casey players in the VFL Team of the Year were as follows:

Back Pocket - Evan Panozza

Interchange - Luke Tynan

Best and Fairest in the AFL Development League was Jordan Pollard of the Casey Scorpions

Well done - hope you can make the next very big step.

I think we have had others - Shane Valenti and Paul Johnson spring to mind - who have done this too but failed to make the next big step. Prove us wrong.

Lol at the typo in the topic heading.

Congrats to Couch, Panozza, Tynan and Lovett for their individual accolades.

While I'm here would like to extend my thanks to you KC for keeping us updated on all things Scorpions and in particular the match day updates and summaries. Really appreciate the time and input you give. I'll be watching the VFL finals with interest, go Scorps.

Valenti was/is better than Magner or Couch. Neither of these guys will be here in 12 months.

Ed: great effort/recognition for Luke Tynan

LOL I hope he does :)

Although we can look at other club midfielders drafted out of the VFL like Sam Mitchell (at ~19 or 20yo) or Michael Barlow (~22yo) who was the runner up behind the J.Pod.

Taggart 2 games (or was it just 1?) for 2 votes is nice, i spose. Look forward to him being fit.

Luke Tynan went from winning the Casey reserves B&F in 2011 to being named in the VFL team of the year in 2012.

Poor bugger. Didn't Bate get the same result recently. Hope it's not some sort of curse.

Not a curse but a reflection of the gulf between AFL and VFL.

Much of a muchness but I agree they will share the same fate.

Brett Lovett has done extremely well as the coach, well done Tom and Brett.

Agree about Brett Lovett. Been some stirring victories this year. Prefer watching Casey than MFC atm.

Good pick up. Rory Taggert polled two votes in his only full game out of three he played for Casey during the year in between back injuries. He played limited time in the others.

Taggert polled the voted in the game against Box Hill and he played a midfield role going forward. His disposal was superb and he kicked a couple of nice goals.

I sat on his table at the Foundation Heroes dinner and he came across as a likeable young bloke from the country who has been working hard to overcome a back injury not unlike the one that impeded Jack Grimes' first season at the club.

He reckons he should be right for the pre season and here's hoping that, in him, we have a young midfielder of quality to add to the recruits coming through in the forthcoming draft and trade periods.

No votes for Cook.

That probably says it all

Apologies for the stuff up with the thread title - I must have been a bit tired and emotional at the time.

These are the Casey votes for the development league

17 J. Pollard

8 D. Cleven

5 B. Galvin

4 D. Dearaugo N. Page

3 R. Plummer B. Salton D. Collins M. Fieldsend

2 D. Nicholls

No votes for Lucas Cook there either although he did play a few games with this team. I'm not surprised therefore that it's now being said the Demons are looking for a trade or that they are/will delist him. Disappointing that this is being discussed before the VFL finals are over.

none for Tynan either od and he made the VFL rep side

I understand the point you make

But he has the excuse of being out injured for a large number of games and it is his first year DC.

I would suggest his first game at AFL round 1 showed more than Cooks 2 years at Casey

No argument about bottom line

Just than Liston votes (lack of) doesn't 'prove' someone is a dud

Same with Brownlow - many famous examples

The Tynan that made the rep side was Josh's older brother Luke.

And it is odd he didn't get a vote...

I guess Couch saoked them all up.

Well done to Tom, but sadly that is his true level. I will be very interested to see if Magner can elevate his game beyond that of a very good VFL player next year. Totally agree that Valenti has both Couch & Magner covered.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
