This is getting rediculous, who was the last player to leave this club via their own steam, David Neitz , I think.

Maloney, Green, Bruce, Trav, Whitey, Oooze, Powelly, Junior, Woey, can't think of one decent player who hasn't left without a set of steak knives.

Geez, youre still stuck at the turn of the century!

So Neeld had to gain the respect of a group of players who somehow managed to lose a game of football by 186 points last year?? Really? Neeld took two dysfunctional and under achieving football clubs in Ocean Grove and the Western Jets U18's and turned them into successful clubs. In the case of Ocean Grove, they won 4 flags in a row. In the case of the Western Jets, they're a development program that's now producing top 10 draft picks and AFL quality juniors thanks in large part to the overhaul he made.

As far as i'm concerned, I could care less if he hasn't been well received by some players, because our on-field performances in the last 6 years have not been well received by myself and most other Melbourne supporters.

I'm willing to give Neeld the benefit of the doubt from all the things we know about him, and from the dysfunctional situation he was put into. He's undertaking a massive task, and if some players can't cope because their noses are out of joint, then they can find another coach who will be their mate, or failing that, perhaps get a real job.

Great post KC - I appreciate the feedback Hells Gates but the coach is not meant to be best mates with the players.....

There would have been a lot of legandary coaches not coaching if they were 'mates' with every player........ To the players I say jump on board or [censored] off.....

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that McCartney was the culture changer at Ocean Grove, where he won a flag first, then Neeld took over and won 4 in a row.

Just confirmed it. McCartney won 4 in a row first, then Neeld 4 after that. So I think you can make a case for McCartney setting up Neeld for his success.

Just confirmed it. McCartney won 4 in a row first, then Neeld 4 after that. So I think you can make a case for McCartney setting up Neeld for his success.

I wouldnt 'buy into' anything Neeldy was doing for 4 Yrs!.. If i didnt like the bloke, or his views.

These guys did.. and won 4 GFs on the trot because of it..

I have to agree. It seems like Neeld walked into the club and said everything you are doing is wrong, and I'm right so listen to me. I know if that happened in my workplace you wouldn't get much respect. He's man management skills have been questioned since the summer, enough times to be some sort of truth to it.

That's an unfair interpretation. He has been at a successful club and knows what it takes to be successful. When Nate Jones says 'what does Scott Pendlebury do' Neeld can tell him because he knows. It may well be that the delivery is not good but his message should be accepted by all. If we want to be successful then there are no short cuts and the hard work required will be embraced by some and rejected by others.

Thats' fine with me. I think we are all happy to accept some short term pain for long term gain. Unfortunately what we have got in the past 6 years is long term pain for no gain - we have gone backwards. Its hard to see light at the end of the tunnel.

You have to remember that Neeld's two biggest coaching influences were Malcolm Blight and Mick Malthouse. He apparently has notebook's full of lessons learnt from both these men. So I mean, it's pretty obvious that he would've incorporated a lot of their personality traits and beliefs into his own style.

They're both very direct and often brutal in their honesty, and often get people offside. But they are also highly regarded and have been highly successful Now i'm not at all saying that it would be acceptable to simply bully or demean players, but I think if you look at all the premiership teams in recent memory, and you can see that ruthless, mentally tough streak that runs through them.

I think our players have been perceived both from the outside, and perhaps even from within as being mentally soft, and this is a big reason why we've had such a cultural problem within our playing group for a long period of time. The Collingwood players have a great amount of respect for him as a coach. Pendlebury, Thomas, Wellingham, Maxwell, Cloke, and O'Brien have all spoken very highly of him.

That's probably because Collingwood players are accustomed to the demands asked of being a professional AFL footballer.

From the outside it looks like Moloney has cracked it with the club because he got kicked out of the leadership group, he got dropped and maybe he just didnt get neelds game plan. But remember this is a guy who in front of Stynes was aked what his goal was he said to play NFL footy.

Anyway I guess that speech he gave at the b&f years ago is forgotten about now. This is more reason we need to get Jack Viney in.

Thanks Brent for the games you played. But when you struggle even agianst GWS and cant get the ball then I guess that sums up your year. Its a shame you chose not to stick it out.

Fair enough i wasn't aware of that. Four flags in a row isn't anything to sneeze at though at any level, and certainly indicates at some level that players are responsive to his coaching methods and his personal approach. He was highly respected at Collingwood so that's good enough for me. Also, the suggestion that he should be Director of Football and Craig should be senior coach, again....really??

The DOF role is really designed for someone who's had long experience of a variety of different roles within the AFL coaching system, but particularly as senior coach. I think Craig's perfect for the role he's in. He get's to spread his vast experience throughout the entire football department, and even undertaking things like leadership programs with our young leaders. Neeld's the one who's been a key part of a very succesful football program in the last 5 years so he seems a good fit for senior coach...

Why are people bagging Neeld, cant you see our culture is shot - and Neeld IS changing it.

By the time Neeld is entrenched, we'll be playing hard footy - he has a hard line approach and thats exactly what we need.

Bailey mollycoddled the group and we are still paying for that, the kids are soft and Neeld is set out on changing it.

As for Moloney, he served us well, played his role, its an ideal situation to be able to offload him - we both win, he gets a chance to win a flag and turn his game around and we get a chance to let him leave on good terms, without delisting him at the end of next year.

As the late Bob Davis said of Ronnie Burn's time at Geelong that he was “good until they taught him how to play”. He's not the only player that has been struggling for form this year while adapting to our "development stage" and learning "the defensive aspects of the game".

Wish him all the best, hopefully in a side that spreads a little more than MFC. Maybe elsewhere he'll start enjoying football rather than being an out of form inconvenience for the football club he's barracked for his whole life.

Without knowing the real inside info re why he's out of favour I think we have to back a new coach and the players he wants and doesn't. Having put Neeld in we cant be half arsed in our support. His risking big and putting a LOT of noses out of joint. While that may be a good thing it may also also be someone who's just not a good leader and is hard for people to follow. Time will tell. If he doesn't work the results will be catastrophic....or should I say simply a continuation of current catastrohpe.

It is a disturbing thought though to think that if Moloney was playing for say an Essendon and was an available free agent we'd be mad about him wouldnt we? Won a B&F last year...19 brownlow votes. Big body, mature age...had trouble with a new coaching regime but so called clearance specialist. I just hope in our eagerness to cut off the "dead wood" that we are able unearth some real talent with players that don't seem to dislike the coach.

I do remember watching that interview and being flabbergasted. It was either an attempt at dead-pan humour or he was being serious. I'm inclined to believe the latter. Jim looked dumbfounded...Not to win a flag with the MFC, not even to have team success at MFC..but.....

But seriously, who would pick him up? He'll be 29. He wasn't tearing the VFL apart. You may get a year or two out of him .

If you're a list manager surely you're more likely to to take a shot on a Tom Couch type who you may get a few years out of.
