One thing not considered, is that players may still be poached by GWS from bottom 8 teams, and therefore compensation picks given AND used.

Hell, GWS might pinch a GC player, meaning GC wouldd get a 1st round compo pick & end up with pick 2 and 3 in this draft.

Anything could happen.

I'm not sure all the details are finalised, I can't find any specific info on it. I'd assume it could be used straight away, but that's only my assumption.

But this is a good article from The Age outlining the process. One for the Road.

Intereststing to note they will hand out net compensation.

Thanks JJ. That article still leaves a lot of uncertainty

If the picks occur this year then it could mess big time with the ND rounds 1 and 2

If i understand correctly GWS OOC player compo picks if used in the same year are deprecated in value

Hopefully the Neil Craig and Misson appointments will help from a sports science perspective. Regardless of position we need to select boys who can run. Would be interested to see if they will be present at draft camps etc.

If we are forced to use Viney at #3 and do not take Whitfield or Toumpas instead it would be a mistake

Interesting to see Toumpas jump up the rankings, they had him down around the late teens, 20's last year when he was a premiership player with Woodville West Torrens seniors as a 17yo.

The whole thing will move around as the year moves on but Toumpas is worth keeping an eye as it Haynes and Vlastuin, along with Viney I wouldn't be disappointed with any of these.

No, that was only because it would further compromise the very drafts that were engineered to build GWS and GC.

Now they'd be worth exactly what ours are now.

My Darling senses tingling..

Outside mid, Outside mid, small forward, small backman, rookie ruckman, Viney. But Sloonie- that's 6 spots! Damn straight it is son, damn straight!

Sloonie, are you prepared to name your darling and explain where the tingling is that he (or she) is sensing? And why?

I meant ones that might be awarded this year (not last year)....................but might be wrong

Are there any references?

I know what you meant.

No reference that I can recall, but the very point of not being able to use them til after the 1st round the last 2 years, was because the 1st rounds of those drafts were for building both GWS and GC.

To then give compo picks that push those draft picks out and dilute the talent going onto those lists, would be robbing peter to pay paul.

Any compo picks earned this year for OOC players to GWS or poached free agents will be available for proper use in the coming draft.

Well if that is true, and the same applies for FA compo picks, the draft positions in Round 1 and 2 this year could change substantially

Makes a lot of our crystal balling possibly pointless

Factors affecting ND (other than ladder)

1] Priority picks assigned now by AFL for low finishing clubs

2] Activated this year Compo Picks due to GCS/GWS poaching

3] Compo picks due to GWS poaching this year

4] Compo picks due to FA this year

Exactly.

Although, I think when looking at the recent form and the list of free agents, the only likely candidates for poaching and/or priorities due to incompetence... would appear to be us.

I'm totally amazed that I am in the minority on this subject. If Jack is rated in the Top 5 at the end of the season, I'm happy to pick him up at Pick 3, but if other players have come on and he slides to a market value of Pick 10, I'd be livid if we have to use our Pick 3 on him.

You already seem pretty livid, but I'd suggest that if you're looking for the Viney situation to alleviate that, you'll be waiting in vain.

First up, there's no real "market". Teams select who they want/need, where they can. Even within the top 10 or so, players move up/down all the time, and there are countless example of top-10 rated certainties who drop half a dozen places - and outsiders who jump up.

But because Viney is already a Melbourne player, we're never going to get any kind of "normal" rating on him. He's not going through the normal channels, is playing school footy, his load is being managed etc. He's being set up for round 1 next year, not for the draft, and I suspect that that will effect the assessment of him by others, even so-called experts.

We've obviously done our homework, we clearly feel that we're getting one of the very best young players going, and I for one don't have a problem with any of it.

As for the other picks, exciting times. Even our second round selection will be worth watching - and I'm sure much debate on Demonland.

Clubs have to nominate usage of compo picks before the start of the respective AFL season. I gather that to mean that any further compensation picks awarded to clubs that have players taken by GWS at the end of 2012 would not be able to be used until 2013, if I've understood the statement below correctly.

Quote from Giants Draft Rules explained:

Compensation picks

Further, as part of the entry rules and in line with the rules that are in operation for the Gold Coast Football Club, Demetriou said the AFL Commission had again confirmed that any club that lost a player to the expansion side would be eligible for a compensation pick.

Compensation picks will be tradeable and can be used by clubs at any time within five years covering the period 2011 to 2015. First round compensation picks can not be until the 2012 draft onwards. Clubs will be required to nominate the year in which they plan to use the compensation pick before the first round of the Toyota AFL season in that particular year.

That's for pre-existing compo picks.

When they are doled out after the loss of a player immediately before the draft, the option is still there to activate them.

See Brisbane. Possibly others I can't recall.

If there is a buddy Franklin hanging round the top 5 then obviously get him, if not midfielders all the way.

Not a bad mid, Buddy.

Good point maurie. I guess this would continue this year at least for FA compensation. Otherwise it completely undermines the first round compo pick that needed to be activated before round one this year.

Yes, but if you activate a first-round compensation pick in the year you get it (i.e. 2012), the pick comes at the end of the first round. If you activate it in subsequent years (i.e. 2013 onwards for picks received in 2012) they are placed after your first round pick.

See The AFL's ruling in full

That negates any first-round compensation pick from the GCS etc. for 2012. It's a considerable incentive to delay until subsequent years and is designed not to compromise the draft further for clubs that lost players to GWS in 2011..

Fair enough.

I think that would apply only to 2010 and 2011, but I'll be a happy little vegemite if you are correct.

I was also under that impression. The AFL didn't want to compromise their compromise (of the draft) so to speak when dishing out picks to GWS last year and GC the year before that.

But if they don't continue those same rules for the GWS and FA compensation this year it will significantly disadvantage and compromise the picks nominated before round one this year.

Why should we have to nominate our first round picks before round one if someone was able to use their first round compo pick gained this year?

I agree that does sound illogical

maybe some of our confusion is the difference between 'trading' and 'using' (activating) a compo pick

you can trade any year up until someone activates them

I hope someone can clear this up because when you add up the four types it could be a considerable number and would certainly skew the nd if all were allowed this year

A valid question. I'm not trying to justify this approach, just thought it was the case - hopefully I'm wrong.

wrt FA compo picks that is a seperate system which theoretically will run into perpetuity (until the AFL change their minds) so all teams will probably just have to cop it.

Originally I thought that it was a bit unfair to lose a FA and not be able to use the pick until the following year. Which is why I assumed that you could use it straight away.

But when you take into account the current activation process, any new GWS or FA compo picks should follow the same rules otherwise the current batch of activated picks will be disadvantaged.

I think the problem is some of these rules haven't been finalised, particularly with FA.

I'm not sure that it would.

My understanding is that we nominate to use the compo picks blind, as in we don't know what other teams are activating picks anyway, whether it's announce before or after the season.

We'd know what compo picks other teams hold, but that's where it ends.

The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti
