I went to the game on saterday and sat with the cheersquad and they had some good new cheers going and one of them was like the barmy army song but i looked around and there was maybe 300 fans around the cheer squad. It went something like we are the demon army. Well i want us to really be a demon army. So i thought how can i help the club to build its army/membership i was thinking this site must have 20,000 members so if everyone done there bit there is no reason to stop us reaching a demon army of around 50,000 now or in the near future. I have just got my dad and sister on board this year so thats 2 fresh demons. But i have about 6 mates i know of who follow melbourne but are not members if we all said i am not giving up till i get 1 mate in as a member we here could make this club strong. We all love the queens birthday because there are so many demon fans every year. I want it to be like that everyweek. We as the fans have got to help to build this club and there are lots we can do like trying to get the local chinese or indians to come to games the club or us could start a membership fund to build this clubs membership. Give out free tickets to chinese or indian students to our games along with a scarf i would help pay to build something like this. If you look at the cricket at how much indians love going to the M.C.G to watch sport lets go to them and say have a look at this here is 2 free tickets and a demon scarf we could grow the club to be very strong. If i had the time i would door knock and go to schools to help we can do it if we all do a our bit. I might be dreaming but i think we can do it. We could have our own social club the DEMON ARMY

Why cant we change them indian jumpers in the cricket season into 20,00 demon jumpers come football season. Big ask but worth a shot?

I think this is a similar idea as to what Schwab is trying to do. He is working on the Chinese community and trying to get them to become Demons. Hopefully our front of jumper sponsor will be a Chinese company that will help to give our membership a boost. If we play another preseason game or two in China it will hopefully also drive up membership.

I think Richmond and GWS are playing off in India next year. I think we should focus on China for the time being. It could be a major win for us if we can get a chunk of the Chinese community on board.

And, like you said, we need to focus on converting more Demons supporters into Demons members!

(To be honest, I have not yet signed up for membership. I will be doing so when my pay comes through next week).

Is there going to be any resistance from the Chinese community due to the name "Demons"? I don't have many connections but those I do all say that the Chinese can be very superstitious. But like all cultures this may be confined to the elder generation.

Considering one of the main local teams established in China as a result of AFL/MFC involvement is called (I think) the Tianjin Demons, I don't think they are likely to be too concerned.

Love the enthusiasm BJ. You are the sort of supporter our club needs more of! It's always great to see that the MFC means so much to others just as it does to myself! I agree that there are many untapped areas of our community that we should look at promoting the MFC to in order to boost membership. May be a challenge though. Indians and Chinese are very traditional and conservative type people unlikely to step out of their comfort zones and they may feel that Aussie rules is a bit rowdy for them.... who knows

Thanks mate im just thinking that something like this will make sure we never get into debt again and when we go to the football we have an army like collingwood because we are moving into a stage were our players will start to make there rise up the top and its the perfect time to get some new fans to have a look at our great club while were on the way to the top.

People tend to forget that people of Chinese origins have been in Australia almost as long as people of Anglo/Celtic origins and I think you will find that they are already quite well represented in the crowds at the footy on any given day. For this reason I am not so sure that just because we have (assuming we get) a China based sponsor, we will suddenly have a surge of members from Australia's Chinese community. Hopefully it will mean more inroads into China for the AFL (and the MFC) which will see further benefits flowing in the form of more sponsorships and media deals.

IMHO, the AFL expanding to these new areas could be a boon for us as well. If, as it's to be believed, we're about to enter a period of success, this can only be a good thing, as kids want to 'follow the winners'. There can also be those (like me) who follow a team to spite everyone else. I didn't follow Melbourne until my teens, (living in QLD and all,) but chose to follow Melbourne as they were playing against Essendon (who many of my friends supported) in the 2000 GF. I've been a member ever since. Either way, surely we'll find supporters in these new markets as long as we can find some sort of success on-field.

If there is any truth in the rumours that it will be a Chinese airline, how good would it be for the inflight entertainment to be preceeded by an advertisement on the MFC. Maybe Muzza's membership video ilk.

Would be a great way to showcase the club and the game and would steer interested persons in the direction of the MFC.

I agree BJ but I think I think we need help from the AFL with getting the asian or indian market as our own. We can't just throw a jumper at them and expect them to be loyal Dee's for generations to come.

I was at the G when we spanked sydney by 80 odd points a couple of years back. We were smashing them and I and many others were having a great time then I saw a bloke who didn't raise a whimper the whole game pick up his melbourne scarf and his precious financial times and walk out! This was 5 minutes into the third quarter! I said to him what are you doing? He replied that he had seen enough and he wanted some wine. I don't want to start class warfare on here and this bloke is free to do as he pleases but I do hope that as we rise up the ladder fans like this bloke are in some way weeded out and replaced by another 10,000 die hard passionate Dee's fans.
