The Gaffer coming home?

Featured Replies

Exactly and thats the key, you must get the player to commit to you. Then we have the upper hand.

Mitch Clark had committed to going back to WA and lookie what happened.

What we are all forgetting is that there could be Victorian clubs with higher picks than our compo picks in 2012 draft who may end up with the whip hand.

Not higher than both compo picks for Gaff. The only teams that can compete with that are the teams with a mid round compo + their 1st rounder i.e. Dogs and Cats. And the only ones who could trump it would be those clubs with a top 4 or 5 pick - and it's quite possible that none of them will be Victorian clubs with GWS and then GC, Port, Brisbane and Adelaide filling last year's bottom 4.

No we couldn't as you have to nominate BEFORE the season starts that you are going to use them

That applied to subsequent years 2012 - 2015.

We could have activated the compo picks if we wanted to in 2011, the cut-off date was November 11.

Compo picks won't be used

Melbourne, the Western Bulldogs, Adelaide and Fremantle all lost uncontracted players to the new club, and received picks from the AFL that could be activated in any draft until 2015.

The Crows and Fremantle both traded their selections back to the Giants during trade week.

The three clubs left holding the picks - the Demons, Bulldogs and Greater Western Sydney - had until 2pm on Friday to advise the AFL if they would use them this year, and the League announced on Friday afternoon that none of the picks had been activated.

key draft dates

Friday November 11 (2pm) - Out of contract primary list player draft nomination deadline. New or expired player draft nomination deadline. Nomination of use of compensatory selection at the 2011 NAB AFL Draft by clubs that lose a player to GWS.

Just a quick one guys re caddy.

I have a little bit of inside knowledge here and know that he 100% wants to play for essendon next year and wont consider other options at all. Hates the GC and just wants to be home.

Dangerfield's contract is also up at the end of the season and with Craig at the Dees it could be a possibility too.

Heard he gets on really well with Craig and misses Melb (the city). He would be a nice addition to the squad.

dont rate him

Spot on we could have had the best facilities on earth it was all about the Visy money.

Yeah, & they're Brown paper Bags, or were they green, allover?

He is from the other side of Torquay i heard he misses VIC but not Melbourne at all?

Geez, would take him in a heartbeat!

I think he has under performed to date personally. but can see a break out year, fitter and more time in the midfield

Would love him in red and blue, but not for both picks though

Yeah, love him @ the Dees but Not for both picks.

A player and a 2nd Rnd pick. If a Davey, or another superfluous quality player was to become Open to a trade, maybe one would want to go to SA, or maybe one would want to return home? + a Rnd 2 pick.

Three players that will most likely be delisted at the end of the year add no value to trades.

Jetta could be good . Given a run .

Essendon don't have any currency. They have Danniher as a father son pick who is rated as high as Viney is. They will be forced to use their first round pick on him.

The only way will be if they lose a star to GWS and receive compensation.

I can also confirm that Caddy will only go to Essendon. I know a few people at the club and they are in no doubt that he will play for them in 2013.

I would be quite happy if we used both compo picks to get Gaff! Got to be fair to the Eagles.

Gaff will be 10 times the player Scully will be....

1 x compo pick plus say Bennell would be pretty hard for other teams to top - especially if Gaff has a preference for Melbourne FC.

I dont think many sides will want to part with their first round picks in the 2012 draft.

The best way to get him back here is for the club to come out and produce the brand of football that will show him that the club is going to be a force in years to come so that when he is in his prime he's going to be associated with a successful football club.

If we want to get him, we should follow the lead of Carlton who got in early with Judd and had people in his ear before he knew he wanted to leave WA.

Of course, showering him with money and offering the Eagles both our compensatory picks, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tom Scully's jock strap might be needed to seal the deal.

You know the footy's here when people are already discussing trades for next October.

I love this!!!

Gaff is definitely worth both compo picks however it would be a steal if we could get away with one plus Bennell.

That would leave us with one to use in the draft or the GWS mini draft

How will he get there though?

The only way I can see Caddy getting to Essendon is if they lose Hurley to GWS and they used the ensuing band one compensation in a trade with GC.

I'm so glad your not in charge of our recruiting. If the Eagles gave us pick 12 back that we used on Clark yeah that sounds better.

I'm glad I'm not in charge of our recruiting either, but it's not because of your pig ignorant comment above.

I highly doubt we will be able to secure Gaff with much less than our two first round compo picks. By all means, if WCE were happy to trade, say, our 5th round draft pick for him that'd be great. But I don't expect they'd be very happy with pick 88 for a proven pick 4 taken just over a year ago. Perhaps I'm deluded though. Our "expert" recruiters may know better. Certainly it'd be interesting to see WCE's reaction to any such proposed trade.

And - I actually understand the trade mechanics of the Mitch Clark deal. In fact, I expect everyone on this site does (some notable exceptions perhaps).

It is my understanding that the reason we could throw a ridiculous amount of dough at Clark is essentially because we were able to call upon the nest egg of dough we had put aside for Tom Scully. The two compo picks we got for Scully also made it easier for us to give up pick 12 to the Lions. But for that, Clark would probably be wearing a purple and white guernsey right now.

The only way I can see Caddy getting to Essendon is if they lose Hurley to GWS and they used the ensuing band one compensation in a trade with GC.

That's pretty much it. If the rumoured offer of pick 19 & Hooker didn't get close to getting it done for a 3 game player then they'll have to up the ante considerably, especially if Caddy has a good season. Essendon will have to lose big - a player of say Ryder's status to get him. Can't imagine that being palatable to the black & red hordes.

Caddy may well have a set preference (not sure if it's based on any ties to the club or on the financial inducements they offered him) but we should be pressing our case to his management. Same with Gaff. Get on the front foot. As WJ says, we have to make our club an attractive option. The addition of both players would go a long way to addressing our greatest deficiency in the midfield.

I'm a fan of both of these kids & if we could snare them with a comp pick plus a player, Mr. Scully's contribution to the MFC might end up being pretty useful

This is a vital element to get Gaff and similar ability players to commit to us combined with quality facilities, aggressive player development, quality club culture (both on and off the field which supporters play a huge part) plus of course the $$$$$.

Ahh, is that what the suns were up to last year??? Hmmn, OK, so they'll do what we did with the Skunk this year, to keep his worth up.

The Skunk's jockstrap wouldn't fit, when it's more likely a females 'G' string.

BUT, the No 31 may be some attraction, even if it needs fumigating & a dryclean.

Jetta could be good . Given a run .

I think his problem is pace. Most small players are quick and he isn't.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
