Narrowing in on either Grimes or Trengove for Captain

That's not an answer and it could be said for every player on the list - just let them play footy.

We've seen he can play.

I'm waiting for him to lead the club.

Of course it is an answer. You just don't like it 25.

I am waiting for Frank Grimes to play at least 10 consecutive games against top opposition. No point being captain otherwise.

I'm totally with you on this one. Leave the kids to play. I'd stick with Greeny, he will have learnt a lot from last years experience.

Agree. They have enough pressure already without adding more at this time. One can't even get on the park. Greeny should go one more year.

For some reason I'd be surprised if they go that way Redleg. The new broom seems to be about delivering change.

If you don't want to burden the kids why not give it to Moloney or Jones?

Green has shown he couldn't handle the burden, why not try a different Demon?

Jones would be an interesting option, he certainly would play with it.

If we want the change, and i think Greeny will play better footy if he isn't captain- Is Mark Jamar too old/not good enough to take it up for 2 years whilst Trengove/Grimes get more exp/footy under their belt?

Because with Green you have an escape clause - he's less likely to play after 2012 - perfect timing for Trengove or Grimes to takeover.

I wouldn't want to give it to Moloney or Jones as an interim measure and then take it from them when JT or JG are ready.

Nietz and Junior were ordinary captains in their first year to boot.

He shouts a lot at training and has a prestigious blog, sir.

Don't know about the blog (nathanjones.com.au), he's been a bit tardy. Last entry ... March 23 last year.

But his tweeting is Olympic class ...

I have been away for a couple weeks, been watching the posts but didn't have much time to post myself.

We need to stop turning on our own, we forget the great things great players have done for our club so quickly its disgusting.

Bradley Green is one of the most passionate and loyal players this group has. He is mature, understand what it takes to become an elite player and knows what the MFC stand for.

I will be the first to admit, he could not back up 2010 form last year, and did struggle with the media attention on his leadership but he is still a fantastic contributor to our club that doesn't deserve the hating.

This time last year we all voted on leaders for 2011, and the results came up with Brad Green or Brent Moloney for captain. You chose it too! So stop turning on him. He didnt turn his back on us when Eddie and his CashBags offered him a chance to be in a real premiership chance, he held fast and stayed with the club he loves.

I also believe he will not be given the chance to captain the team again, but he still deserves our respect.

Jones, seriously? What case is there to be made for him?

We have no perfect candidate I have said repeatedly.

It's about time people got used to the fact that there will be flawed leader in charge of the Dees in 2012.

Jones is in the mix to be that flawed leader.

And he gets it from most of us.

But calling him a disappointing captain is not turning on him, it is stating the truth that even you evidence by your belief that he won't return as captain.

So give him a chance at redemption. He had one bad year but has been one of our best performers for the last 5 or so years. With the experience of a year of captain under his belt, a more mature team, a new coaching department he deserves another shot at it. It also gives JT & Grimes another year to develop and stay on the park.

i would rather see Brad redeem himself by kicking goals in a top forward line. I doubt Neeld will keep the same captain as last year. It didn't work.

He's no chance. I'm surprised that someone who posts a lot and watches a lot would even think he was.

We all have different ideas on who would be the most suitable choice.

He isn't my first choice, but unlike another mooted leader (Jamar) he has been in the Leadership Group in his career.

And unlike another mooted leader (Moloney) the difference between his best games and his worst games isn't huge.

And unlike another mooted leader (Grimes) he consistently stays on the park.

And unlike another mooted leader (Green) his body language isn't pathetic when things are difficult.

I am not saying I would give him the reigns because of these reasons, but he is in the mix for the captaincy and these arguments in favour of him.

Again, I will say - stop putting crosses through names people, because you will be left with 6 vice-captains and no captains...

We have no perfect candidate.

If a reason for a captain is that "he gives time for X and Y to develop into a captain" you may aswell forget about it.

Green may be captain again, but it will be because of a significant improvement of his leadership in the off-season (if the new FD can determine that) and hopefully a heart-to-heart with Neeld about what is expected of him.

Besides, his redemption will come with consistent performances as a leader and he can do that without a title, and might be better off achieving this redemption (if it required for fans) without a title.

To be a mid-sized player and be guaranteed a start every week, you need to be versatile. If you don't want your captain sitting in the stands, they really need to be top 10 automatic selections.

Green last year played as a one dimensional lead up forward. He would have been dropped more often if he had not been captain; indeed it became a bit of a distraction when his form really ebbed away. Unless he can rotate back through the midfield, which he realistically probably won't, then Green is not a top 10 pick. Green cannot be captain.

Grimes has only played as a medium sized rebounding defender. Until he spends time rotating through the midfield (and putting a string of games together) he is not a top 10 first pick.

When available, Jamar, Frawley, Trengove, Jones and Moloney will all be amongst the first 10 picked.

Frawley for me, with these others as his deputies.

One thing I find intriguing about Brent Moloney, was his role in the 186 debacle which in my opinion has never been satisfactorily explained. Sort of disappeared in the storm that blew up soon after. Nil possessions till halftime then subbed which is a very strange statistic for a leading midfielder. Coming after CS was supposedly going to get the sack and DB to get another two years. Was this some sort of coup plot and is he some sort of string puller amongst the players?

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
