Last year a friend of mine who saw a few practice matches and training runs said get Tappy he will be a gun. I didnt know much about him but turned out to be a great pick up. I also went with Stef Martin and I think I remember reading he had the highest price rise in the whole AFL.

Just wondering if anyone else knows of any gems, Melbourne or otherwise, I'm thinking Col Sylvia is gonna have a break out year ... but have been saying that for a few years now.

Tom McDonald will become a gem. He will develop to become a great CHF or flexible enough to go to CHB if needed. Extremely athletic and very new to the game of football, it will only need 2 more years to see his skillset becone A GRADE.

Yeah, I was thinking TMac might be a good bargain. Davis will get some games this year, but maybe not enough to bother picking him. We could well see Nicholson playing most of the year as our upgraded Rookie as well, so he'd be a good value cheap buy.

As far as Melbourne players go, I would look at ...

Jack Trengove - Will be into his third year which stats show is often the year a high draft pick mid has a bit of a breakout season. Durable player who will spend a lot of time in the engine room following the departure of $.

Jordan Gysberts - A more risky choice but also a third year mid and a genuine accumulator of possessions who can easily rack up 100+ point games. That said, has yet to cement a spot in the side.

Jack Watts - Back him in to take it up a notch on his promising 2011. Has shown he can win his own ball upfield, as well as kick goals. Should be nicely priced and may prove one of the steals of the season. Will be looking to impress Neeld after a well placed pre-season rocket.

Brent Moloney - Proven hardbodied midfielder who could give your side a point of difference over "cookie-cutter" Supercoach sides. Rarely injured and should be in the top 15 midfielders by season's end.

Players to avoid ....

Colin Sylvia - Sorry Col, you've just burnt me too many times. Flatters to deceive with the odd massive score followed by successive weeks of going missing. I finished in the top 20 nationally in Supercoach this year and he was one player who cost me winning the cash.

Liam Jurrah - As much as I love the Jurrahcane, he's just not a SC option with the way he plays. Capable of kicking 5 from 7 possessions, but that doesn't translate to enough points.

Brad Green - My feeling is we've seen the best of Greeny and Neeld will look to use him in specialized forward lines roles as the season progresses. There will be better options at his price.

Stephan Martin - One of the finds of SC this season, he won't have it as easy in 2012 with the arrival of Clark and Sellar. Too risky.

Rookies ...

As with the Suns this year, you should be looking primarily at GW$' booty of high draft picks to fill these positions in your side. From all reports Taggart is a likely type with a strong body, but there will likely be more fancied options from the pointy end of the draft. Mature age, ready-to-go draftees (ie. Geelong's Orren Stephenson) should also figure prominently in your calculations.

Range Rover - Gysberts could be really good, do you think Grimes if he can stay un injuried? Trengrove and Watts I fear will be too pricey. What are you thoughts on Pendels Swann Judd Abblett, managed all 4 by half way through last year, is this still the premier midfield? Also a big fan off Dangerfield and enright scored well for me, had problems with my foward line not scoring huge, going to try for smaller mid field type fowards this year as apposed to key forwards Am thinking Ivan Maric could be a good pick up for 3rd ruck also

last year was my first go and I loved it! I would recomend it to anyone who isnt involved

We ran a couple of Demonland Supercoach leagues last year Josh, which I'm sure will happen again early in 2012 so by all means join in.

To answer your questions ...

- Grimes would be a lock in many back lines but so far he's proven to be too injury prone. Avoid.

- Trengove and Watts won't be cheap but I think they'll still have scope to jump in price. It depends what strategy you use and if you want to go for some mid-pricers early on.

- Swan, Judd, Ablett and Pendlebury are all what they call 'premiums' so you can't really go wrong with them in your team. If I was looking to select an early captain in my starting side, I'd be leaning towards Swan. He's a machine.

- Dangerfield could be a good choice but like Sylvia from our team, he's yet to hit his straps for a full season. A high risk, high reward choice.

- Enright has been a very good SC player for many years but dropped off a bit this season. Not sure about players 30+ in age. They can fall away fairly quickly.

- Ivan Maric is worth looking at for third ruck, but also consider Setanta O'Hailpin who should see a lot of game time at the Giants, as well as Orren Stephenson at the Cats who will be priced as a rookie yet get plenty of opportunities in the senior side.

I'm a big fan of SC too. It can be very addictive!

i went with swallow last year and charlie dixon from GCS who both werent all that flash. GWS honestly wont have much of the ball

Patton will be cheap enough, but im not sure if he will score that well as a KPP in his first year.

For me, Watts will be one of my first selections, and that Tom guy from GWS could go alright. Brian Lake might be one to watch too, if he can get back his form from the previous year.

My vote is for SuperCoach over Dream Team.

i play both, and each has its own idiosynchroses...the scoring system on supercoach allows to hirer scores but relies alot more on effieciency and penalises mistakes heavily. DreamTeam on the other hand is just about base stats so someone like batram if he got 10 kicks he will score 30points on dt but if they are all clanger kicks he will actually be in negative points on supercoach

its interesting by the end of the season to compare your 2 teams and see the differences and similarities

edit- love batrams atttack on the ball and the man, but hope he gets some kicking practice in over the pre-season

I prefer Supercoach. The scoring system is more nuanced (ie. takes into account a player's effectiveness when using the ball) and therefore a greater test of your ability to judge a player's worth.

I don't know why but I always seem to be able to get better value for money with the players I choose at the start of the season in SC (as opposed to DT).

I had Zac Smith and Brandon Matera from GC last year and both were brilliant, there is obviously good choices in the new sides, its getting the right ones. I agree Patton will not score very well but 90% of there team will be cheap (150000 ish) and play alot of games, good value for money if you get it right.

Arnt prices just what ever they finished on last year, with a slight change for the "magic number" he had a huge 2010 is why he was so expensive...averaged 125 that year

Thanks JCB but I wasn't that happy with my UF season. Traded terribly and then all my big men went down with season-ending injuries.

One of the hardest things and something i actually manged to achieve last year i think was weeding out all the MFC players which WONT score well.

All we hear all summer is how good they look ect, and then we think well they are young, a year older ect but this imo is the hardest thing, not picking every MFC player who has "trained the house down".

I bought Brad Green in DT last year for $400k and traded him when he was down around $260k IIRC.

I'm sure lots of coaches were burnt the same as myself but I reckon he will be back to his best next year and will provide some pretty good value starting off as mid priced forward.
