2011 Player Review - # 41 Troy Davis

Recommended Posts

Davis suffered from thyroid issues through the pre season but came back and performed well as a tall defender at Casey in his first year on the list and this should hold him in good stead looking forward to the future.

The thing with Davis that makes him such a good prospect is his raw power. Explosively fast, good hands and willing to back himself and break a tackle. Currently excellent defensively and started to add a really damaging dash to his game later on. Seems very coachable too.

Quality prospect who makes the back line very flexible.

For those of us who have been unable to see Casey games, can you please enlighten us as to why he is seen as such an exciting prospect?

I'm enjoying what I'm reading in this thread, and snippets I've heard elsewhere during the year. I havn't seen Troy play, but from the reports he seems like a very good prospect. Again, from those who have seen them play, how does he compare with Tom McDonald in what he can be expected to bring to the team?

I'd say he plays like Brian Lake at his best.

Needs to put a bit of size on, but reads the ball really well in the air, attacks it and then takes off when he hits the ground.

One I'm very much looking forward to watching.

Should play seniors in 2012, barring injury.

Not a lot though, because it'll be hard to break into that backline.

Another reason Joel Mac's time is probably up.

If I was to compare him with someone it would probably be Harry O'Brien. He is a contested ball winner, but it's his power that has him break tackles and dash away. He's a bit bigger than Harry, though. But he plays that style.

Those that have seen him, is he a key position prospect ? I am having doubts that from a desperate dash to suddenly recruit talks last year that only 1 out of 4 looks to be a key position size I.e McDonald whereas Howe cook and Davis have doubts for either height or size.

What do people think ? Flanker or key possie ?

Both. He has the strength and power and size to play KPP, but has the speed to play mid sized. He's the same size as Frawley. He offers a huge amount of flexibility, which is important because it allows you to maintain your structure in defence no matter who the opposition picks.

Unfortunately he's at the 'undraftable' 192cm mark. :P:ph34r:

Cook is at least an inch taller than both. He just needs time to fill out. Patience.

Looks like we have another Frawley on our hands.

Gotta be happy with that!

Good body on body, good set of mits and not afraid to go back with the flight, can also read the play well. What's that? He's a skinny kid who won't be a regular part of the team until he bulks up a bit? Just shut the hell up.

He'd go pretty close.

I don't go with the Harry O'Brien comparison. I don't think he's got the agility. I'd liken him to Eric McKenzie or Antonie Grover.

I know that will deflate many but both are absolutely AFL quality backs. That's where I think Davis will fit.

Honestly, on the few occasions I've seen him, I've been thinking that he's going to knock Garland out of the side in a couple of years. This isn't a knock on Col, but I can see this kid playing the same role and doing it better. He's going to be stronger and possibly faster, and while I'd have to see more of him playing to be sure, I suspect he may wind up being a better kick as well. The real question for me is how he dropped so far in the draft.

It's clearly a long way to go before we see if he works out, but the potential is there to be a very very good player.

You could fit Frawley, Garland, McDonald and Davis in the same backline.

That is of course the other option. I just think that we tend to be a bit top heavy all over the park. We already get torn apart by teams with good small forwards and lack anything resembling a small forward ourselves. I like to think that in the future we'll play less talls and cover the weaknesses.

Thanks to all the above posters for their insights - certainly seems an exciting prospect.

If he turns out to be even close to Frawley, or Harry O for that matter, together with Tom McDonald and Col we have the makings of a super defence.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
