So how does it work out we get 3 selections in the national draft? Did someone get added to the veteran list?

Scully, Warnock and Maric left the senior list but we gained Clark. That's 2 senior spots.

Is Aussie being moved to the Rookie list?

List lodgement today has ...

Out: Maric, Wonaeamirri, Scully, Warnock (plus rookies Campbell, Johnston, McNamara and Newton)

In: Clark

That's all we need to do for the draft (3 picks)

OK, so instead of starting another thread 'draft needs' i thought I'd post it here.

I've analysed our list pre-national and rookie drafts to figure out the holes that need to be filled in our list.

Our best 18 imo:

Garland Frawley Grimes

Blease Rivers Tapscott

Davey Moloney Sylvia

Howe Watts Petterd

Green Clarke Jurrah

Jamar Trengove McKenzie

Int: Martin, Jones, Gysberts, Morton, Bail, Bennel, Strauss

Depth: Bate (Flanker), Dunn (Flanker), Bartram (Back Flanker), Jetta (Mid), Macdonald (Back Flanker), Spenser (Ruck)

Developing KPPs: Cook (KPF), Gawn (Ruck), Davis (KPD), Fizpatrick (Ruck/KPF), Mcdonald (KPD)

Rookies: Evans, Nicholson, Lawrence

I see the holes in our list as follows:

1. We need a genuine crumbing small forward. Only one on our list is Lawrence who is super speculative.

2. We need a genuine stopping back pocket who focuses on negating small forwards- i.e. strong defensively. We currently have none who can do this naturally- blease, grimes, tapscott and strauss should all be playing rebounding roles or midfield roles

3. We need a genuine tagger, not a makeshift one (ala Bail or Jones)

4. CLASS IN THE MIDFIELD

Note what we do have: we have good ruck stocks. With the addition of Clarke and the KPPs we have developing, our Key Forwards and Key Defenders actually look pretty solid now as well. We have plenty of flankers and have drafted a bunch of rebounding defenders.

So...

The first 3 'needs' are role players, whilst not the most important players in the team, we are clearly lacking them. These 3 should be focused on in this years draft and rookie draft, since we have average draft picks and role players can ussually be found around 30s-50s.

If we can find a great tagger, small forward n small defender this year, next years draft can all be about adding class to the midfield. Viney + 2 first round compo picks used on midfielders (adding 3 midfielders to our current crop) OR Viney + trade our compo picks for a star midfielder.

Thoughts

I wouldn't even bother including for consideration Green, Davey, Rivers... Maybe Jamar and Moloney too.

You draft for the next 10 years.

Posted

As to point 2, pretend we had to trade the compo picks for a small defender and anyone was on the table - who would you choose?

There aren't many elite small negating defenders getting around.

Who is Geelong's? Or Collingwood's?

I don't think it's as much of a need as is perceived.

Do we continually get burnt by small forwards we can't contain?

I don't think so.

You're right, the back pocket and tagger is a role player. Won't get the accolades and definitely shouldn't use a compensation pick to get one... but imo it's still a hole in our side nonetheless.

StKilda's Sean Dempster came 3rd in their B&F this year

Geelong has Josh Hunt, who is an important player in their line up

Collingwood have Toovey, who is a very important cog in the collingwood team

Really good defensive players are important to team balance and every team needs some. We don't have any.

Not according to the Pies, they tried desperately to trade him and he could even have been delisted if Davis stayed and he had stuck to his pay demands.

Redders, that is not accurate, Toovey wanted more money and did a deal before Davis said he wanted out. However, understand your point. What we need is a steady half back flanker- I think we have two- Davis, will be a very solid HBF,who can look after the talls or mids, whilst I feel Bail could become a very solid HBF.or BP,looking after the smalls.

Have reread what I said and it is accurate. Toovey was shopped around. Pies knew for a while before it was reported that Davis was gone. Still needed to reduce salary cap pressure. Toovey took less than he wanted and he was kept. McCarthy was let go and McCaffer was also kept after renegotiating. If Davis had stayed I am sure Toovey or McCaffer was gone.

What I was trying to get at was that clearly the Pies don't see Toovey as a must keep.

Agree. I think I read somewhere that McCaffer has a fairly serious injury that he was struggling with.

SNOOP DOG'S PHANTOM DRAFT 2011 - ROUND THREE

# 52 Melbourne - Sam Kerridge (Bendigo / 188 / 83 / 93)

Was very highly rated coming into this years draft and was one who probably didn’t quite live up to expectations through the year. IN saying that he certainly had a pretty good end to the season and was rewarded with a couple of senior games where he performed really well. Tall athletic sort of player who accumulates the footy and has a fair bit of class.

AFL Comparison – Michael Barlow

Roughie – Still think they could do with a tall fwd or defender here and there are a number of reasonably rated one left.

There is a write up about this bloke in todays paper. Sounds like a nice type, and a good attitude. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/months-of-adversity-harden-kerridges-resolve-to-reach-top-flight/story-e6frf9jf-1226186602883

Does anyone know any more about him?

For all you stats freaks

When was the last time our first pick in the ND was as low(high?) as 36?

Well I did some research

There has been 4 VFL drafts1986 to 1989. After that it was all AFL national drafts

We have never had as low a 1st pick as 36 (in fact not even close), so in theory this will be our worst ND ever.

I will post later with all our draft picks since 1986 (some very interesting names) and also trades

very very very wishfull thinking, but hoping elliot kavanagh will slip through, he has been injured so its half a chance, but very wishful!

even though we have high picks...I don't think it's unreasonable to expect one or two players we pickup from this years draft to play next year.

Jeremy Howe was taken pick #33 and Tom McDonald #53. Both have made successful debuts.

happy days.

This list daisy Speaks volumes Daisy.

It says it all really, apart from our nearly non existent player development of the past.

The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
