Its irrelevant how much money we have in the salary cap - we would still need to cough up some serious draft picks or players to get a big name.

And whats the point in drafting someone like Goddard when 3 quarters of our quality are currently under 22 years old?

Im of the view we just use pick 12 this year, and 3 first rounders in next years big draft on quality kids.

Bate or Warnock will secure us nothing better than a second round pick upgrade in my opinion.

I'm not against this at all Dee 16. But mu ideal is to get an O'Meara/Crouch/? with a pick&player/s...

But also use the other pick for a kid next year as we'll use one for viney.

Burt I also want us to trade out an older Top player Now to get a Dangerfield or Boak or whoever we can dislodge. Salopek?

IMO we need to spread and get a young gun mid, and a 22 -24 Yr old Mid. Moloney and Jones and Trenners need help. And we need to play Gawn, Martin, & Spence/Fitz.+ ???

This guy fits the age bracket that we require perfectly, also being a midfielder helps, and is genuinely a great player, is the type of player i would target

Another one would be Rockliff, is a bit younger but has that hard edge,

No-one from a team in flag contention has gone to GC or GWS except Gazza

Harbrow - Bullies were expected to be there abouts this year

Campbell Brown ?

What I do believe is no A grader has gone to either club excepting Ablett ( and maybe Richitelli but he was mightily [censored] off at Voss)

With the 500k salary we'd have paid Scully we should be in a good position to "overpay" a quality 22-24 yr old mid or large forward who wants to come home to Melbourne... get them to do a Luke Ball and demand their club trade with Melb (us offering pick 12) or they will nominate for the draft with only MFC able to cover their contract needs.

Agreed. We already have enough younger players. We need to get some good quality players that are ready to go. Also, we need players with leadership capabilities.

I had dream last night we got Pendlebury, he said he felt like he had come home. Great dream.

Imagine if we got him, that might be the we are going to get yours Garry was referring to .

Its clear pendles will be causing the wobbles the grief we had last year by not signing (in the last year of his contract).

Ah let me dream on.

Would much rather draft Ahmed Saad than trade for Byrnes/Nason or draft Rose

Don't need any- got a little ripper on our rookie list- Laurence. With a HUGE pre season could play AFL in 2012.

Firstly, we can't use the compo picks this year in the draft, but we can trade them. If we decided to keep them we can use them anytime 2012-onwards in the draft(s) - (any of the next 5 drafts) IIRC. But we have to nominate at the start of the year in question if we intend to use them that particular year.

Re: St.Kilda - They would need to decide that if they had an inkling GWS were gunning for Goddard in 2012 or Goddard was open to moving on (which he has stated) - would they prefer to receive two compo picks in return in 2012 (with no immediate return next year in way of a player of equal value) or would they want to trade him now and guarantee a mature or semi-mature player and pick(s) in return for him "in the now"... . It all depends on what St.Kilda would want IMO. And the non-coach aspect ATM makes it all the more interesting and bewildering.

Btw, it wasn't meant to be a statement by me re: "similar vintage" ....but it depends whether or not St.Kilda see themselves still a chance for a flag in 2012 too.

Clearly there are big decisions that need to be made at St.Kilda in where they are at with regard to their list. They will be competitive next season. So what do you do as coach or club ? Put 2011 behind and soldier on and let evolution take place ? And what of the player in question ? Does he think about his future ? Luke Ball did. Would St.Kilda want a season in 2012 wondering what on earth is happening with Goddard and GWS ? Clearly the distractions at Melbourne and Geelong were evident. St.Kilda had enough distractions in early 2011 to learn from this. Food for thought anyway.

Decisions, decisions.

HT, you said we might have to give up someone who is on pretty good coin with value. The immediate players I thought fitted this criteria would be Sylvia, Rivers, Davey or Jamar. There aren't too many others on our list that meet your criteria, which is why I made the comment about "similar vintage", as those players listed are just that to Goddard.

Frawley aside, I don't think we have a player aged between 22-26 that is getting paid top coin that would play a big role in St Kilda's rebuild without the need for them to bottom-out.

I think an aspect that is different for the MFC come this trade week is its attitude. We wil go hunting as opposed to be a reactionary to anothers poaching. We couldnt do much about that certain other someone but when its out in the open as is essentially the tenet of trade week then its a different ball game.

Its Wabbit season !!!!

I'm going to expand on this B59, as I have been going to write something similar (wow, you and I in agreeance - the planets are ever so slowly aligning!).

I want us to have that attitude that we are the hunter. We will not be reactive, we will be proactive. So what if a player (eg. Goddard), has 1 year left on his contract. It wouldn't stop the scum or filth from making contact, so why should it stop us???

We sat back and did minimal about Ross Lyon becuase he was contracted, and I fear that we played a similar role with Malthouse. Yeah, sure, MM said he didn't want to coach in 2012, GLyon was public about how if MM's situation changed, that we would love to chat with him.

If we have this $500k card up our sleeve, I'm hoping we don't sit back next week and wait to see who's available. I want us to make someone available. It's just like going for a job - sit back and wait for one to pop up in the paper and you're limiting yourself to where you can work. Get off your ass and visit places you want to work for, and you'll give yourself the best chance of getting the job you want.

Trade Pick 12 and both Scully compo picks for O'meara & Crouch...

We will have these two plus Viney training with us next season. Possibly!

This is being toughted as the asking price for pick 1 in the draft ALONE,

It would be nice to get an established play as mentioned, but i wouldnt want to "over pay" them to get them here, or to much anyway. What happens with there second contract? do they want the same money which they are being over paid? throws wage structures out completely

The advantage in offering Pick 12 & both Scully compo picks for both O'meara & Crouch is that we are only dealing with GWS.

It is a reasonably shallow draft this season. So GWS would have both Scully compo picks for the next 4 or 5 years to use.

The deal would be reliant on us getting both players!

O'meara for both Scully compo picks.

Crouch for Pick 12.

Bate may be an addition to the deal. Giving them an AFL body ready to go.

And im saying all those picks will likely get you pick 1 only, Crouch is worth far more than pick 12 likely top 3 next season

You're getting warmer.

But I think the mini draft will take precedence billy and if the club is focussed on the like of O'Meara or Crouch, any due diligence approach with respect to Goddard, would have already been explored.

Crouch aint worth Pick 3 next season! GWS need to get something for him this season in the mini draft... So I think Pick 12 and a player could do the job. I think he is one of the U17.

If he is next seasons draft he will go very highly, top 3 is possible maybe optimistic by me, but he would be a certain top 10 this far out. had the second most effective kick in the TAC as a 17yo

Emma Quayle:

A fast, powerful midfielder from Ballarat, he is not considered too far behind O'Meara in the pecking order; if he doesn't get picked up, he already looms as a high choice in next year's draft.

We aren't the only ones that have first round draft picks to offer, and we aren't in the box seat (Gold Coast having pick 4 + a first round compo pick would be in the best position). On the other hand, chasing a topline player is where we are easily in the box seat as we have plenty of room in our salary cap, as well as those first round picks.

There are 17 clubs that would kill to get their hands on either of those 17 year olds - competition will be fierce. We may have 3 or 4 clubs who want Goddard, but I believe we are ahead of them (because of the $$$).

A few MFC supporters have MFCSS regarding these 17 year old picks.

I suspect GWS would have doubts about priming the MFC to have O'Meara, Crouch and Viney arriving in 2013... Their (and their AFL paymasters) entire build and business plan is premised on GWS being near a premiership in 5 years when the next TV rights are up for grabs (same for GC) and facing a MFC midfield with those three additions (in addition to what we have) would cause them to pause and spread the picks elsewhere.

The big question I've got is where do the experts think O'Meara would go in the draft next year? Ok, he is certain to go number 1 in the mini draft, but if there was no such beast, and he was in the ND next year, would he be pick number 1?

I think the only guy to give him any competition is Lachie Whitfield, Victoria Country player, is a way out with alot of the players being even younger than Crouch and O'Meara however

Sorry but there would be no chance of landing both O'Meara and Crouch in this Mini Draft. There would only be a chance of one.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
