The Waylen (aka Zyrus) Manson Thread

Still, he is showing potential. I'd love to see him play a season in the VFL.

As a MFC rookie playing for Casey.

Manson's stocks soar

Melbourne have become the first club to meet Kimberley teenage sensation Waylen Manson in Darwin as interest in the athletic forward mounts in the build-up to this month's draft following an avalanche of goals.

Manson has been in sizzling form for Waratahs in the Northern Territory Football League after impressing in a short stint for Claremont's colts late in the WAFL season.

He made a statement with 10 goals last month alongside dual Coleman medallist Brendan Fevola and has since bagged hauls of six and eight to take his season tally to 42 from four senior matches and one in the reserves.

Melbourne recruiting scout John Turnbull spent several days in Darwin, watching Manson play last Saturday, then knocked on the 18-year-old's door on Monday to find out more about the goal-kicking machine.

Very interesting article, worth the read. doesnt say a hell of alot but still good.

Manson, who is from Billiluna - a community 180km south of Halls Creek with a population of about 200 - said playing alongside Jurrah would be a dream come true.

"That would be great. It would be fantastic for me, I would love it," Manson said.

It's obviously very difficult to gauge where he will be picked up but if you believe the hype somehow I doubt he'll last to pick 36.

I do too, how many teams will be using there first rounder on a semi speculative selection such as waylen? I think Geelong ar a huge show with the picks they downgraded to slightly around 28-34. Richmond maybe but they have been scared by Taylor whoever... either way teams will definitely look at him with second rounders in a "weak" draft.

The name does not work for me!

Sounds like he should be singing in Memphis or Tamworth not running around the MCG

Who cares a continental about a name as long as he can play.

It's mentioned in the article that he's not using his first name (Zyrus) presently, as his community is mourning a like named person. If he can kick goals, I think his name would would excite!

According to the afl.com.au site he's had a slight name change (apparently C & W singers are held in less esteem than mass murderers, but who am I to judge?)

Zyrus Manson

From: (Claremont, WA)

DOB: 24/04/93

Height: 193cm

Weight: 79Kg

KEVIN SHEEHAN SAYS

"High-leaping and lightly built player who is dangerous near goal. From the Kimberley region of WA. From Waratah FC (NT)."

Usually when a club says they are interested in a player they don't take him. He may not be an easy player to manage, for a club lacking support and inexperienced with the difficulites often associated with indigenous players moving far from home. That said, we appear to be a club that has the framework in place, that could nurture his AFL career and make it easier for him to adapt..

Casey Sibosado at one end.

Liam Jurrah at the other.

I'd take the punt, provided he actually wanted to play AFL level.

But this isn't a case of a club simply saying it's interested in a player. One of our recruiting people has gone up there, watched him play, met him and discussed his future.

We're also a club that won't be put off by any difficulties, perceived or otherwise, experienced with taking an indigenous player from a desert community in that part of the country. I could imagine other clubs might baulk at the prospect but it won't worry us. Our problem will be what to do if he's still available at 36 and we there are other players around high on our list of priorities.

What I was trying to get at was, that if you are really interested in a kid, why tell the whole world?

The whole world knows everything these days.

The story goes that a number of clubs were interested in Liam Jurrah a few years ago. Scouts were sent to Darwin. They all saw each other there and a few days later they were all spying at training when the Warlpiri Wizard was invited to North Melbourne.

You can play your cards close to the chest but you can't hide much these days and your recruiters need to put time into players if you're serious about getting them.

I would have thought you just select them if available at your pick.
