Tom Scully in September ...

Grandson of a gun

Just a quick question - What if Tom decides to stay (and thsts a big if IMO) how will he be treated by the supporters?

Based on some of the comments on this site it seems there are quiet a few who now dislike him because of the process he has gone through to make up his mind.

Just curious.

He would want to justify the obscene amounts of money he'll be getting paid pretty quickly...

Gary Ablett's last contract at Geelong initially looked to be very generous, but ended up being a pittance in comparison to his form over the last few years there.

Scully seems to have the drive to be the ablsolute best he can possibly be and we can measure it's value retrospectively. But how do you put a value on having the ablility to drive, motivate and drag fellow teammates to bigger and things? I'm sure I read an article on Nathan Jones stating that having Scully and Trengove in the teams gives him the drive to be better.

I think he would want to aswell.

Maybe Green and Davey can too.

We'd be half decent...

I find it interesting that we have history of underpaying footballers and then they show something ( usually at contract renewel time) and we give them hefty increases and then they underperform.

Martin will get a nice increase as he has shown rapid progress.

However Davey, Bruce, Jeff Whites last contract, Woey. TJ and to a certain extent Green ( he performed well last year)got sizeable increases that they have not justified by performance.

Judd got an incredible amount of money to go to Carlton and IMO has been worth it.

Can you remember any MFC footballer that we have stepped up their earn a considerable amount and have actually repaid it in performance ?

Which would be 13, and 31.

Which is why we will trade them or use them the year after when they will be around 11 and 21.

If we trade them for ready made players - our flag window is maintained.

If we use them - our flag window is pushed back.

This indeed makes sense ..lol. The value is only ratified if deferred. Be wasted on compromised drafts. Timing is everything as alluded by rpfc. The only qualifier is if some smokie(est player) appears that wished to becoome a Demon. Youd have to equate that on its merits.

I couldn't care less about the process or charade, whatever you want to call it.

The fact is this:

If Tom stays and has a break out year free of injury, all would be forgotten. If it's another mediocre year with a few niggling injuries then there will be plenty of knockers lining up.

This charade is an absolute joke. How naive does he think people are? No one is buying it and it isn't going to help save his reputation.

I'm buying it. I am becoming more and more sure he will stay.

This is a last ditched effort by GWS as they have EVERYTHING riding on this signing.

Tom Scully will commit to MFC by the end of the week.

He is gone. Alistair Lynch on Insider last night basically admitted it. Dunstall and Scott got it out of him. He's gone up there to check out his new home, not check out what its like compared to our facilities. Deal will be done end of the week.

LMFAO...

The amount of cash you have is relative to the type of player you attract there too... (hope my missus doesn't read this)

I must have been watching a different program - Lynch basically admitted that a decision should be by the end of the week. Did I snooze through the part where he said " yeah, he is going" ?

Must admit I did see Lynch on AFL Insider last night - but I did not take it as "he's signed with GWS" at all... sounded to me like Tom is genuinely yet to decide (consistent with what G Lyon said on Monday night). The only thing Lynch revealed is that we're likely to know the outcome later this week.

I'll rephrase it to "perceived reputation" then if it offends you so much.

You dont know Tom any better than I or others on here, so i may be right and then you will be guilty of defending a traitor. Its all perception and opinion. I choose to believe his decision is already made and he is doing this to try and preserve his own reputation. This is not in the best interest of the MFC and thats all that counts to me, not some kid.

No, I don't know Tom particularly well. But all I am saying is that I think we should all reserve judgment until he has made his decision.

Thats exactly what I thought as well. However did you also think that Brad Scott didnt believe him ? ( not that that makes one iota of difference)

So Rhys Palmer's player profile is up on the GWS website. But....but I thought his manager said they would talk to another club? Oh you mean they just BS'ed everyone? Surely not?

I really find it hard to believe anyone thinks Scully will stay at the MFC. To me it is so blatantly bloody obvious he is going it's quite laughable.

His manager stated that there was another club interested, and they would talk to them

However, Palmer accepted the GWS offer

What possibly could his manager gain by saying another club was interested?

Oh my God, this is getting boring. Please Tom hurry up and announce your re-signing with Melbourne, so that we can get back to the important business of Demonland..... deciding who needs to be traded :)

In all seriousness though, as I have said all season, I've no idea whether he will stay or go. That said, the only truths we have been told all season have been from his own mouth, Garry Lyons Mouth and Chip Frawleys mouth. Everything else is pure speculation.

So, because I don't know which way he is leaning, I take the people who do know something on their word, and that is that he is now in the process of making the biggest decision of his life. Is it totally unreasonable that he is selfish enough to try look after himself, when all you are selfishly denigrating him for doing so? I've heard him labelled a mercenary, childish and the list could go on and on, but the fact is the only childish ones on here are those who won't allow a kid some time to PROPERLY consider two offers without distraction, AFTER his football commitments are over.

When I weigh up the benefits to each offer, it becomes crystal clear that the offer from MFC is better in the long run for his future, and his future earning potential. And this is, I believe, where we will see the difference in the coming days. If I am wrong, I will (un)happily eat my words, and I will be devastated to lose him. If I am right, I do not look forward to the way some of you will treat him given the way he has been treated throughout all of this.

I think that there is where posters are getting confused. There is one quite large camp that thinks he is gone. There is a very small camp that think he will stay. But there is a significant amount of people ( me included and I hope you dont mind me speaking for you, RPFC, Hardtack and Nasher) who to this point are taking TS at face value and saying that he will make a decision one way or the other and until the decision comes out of his or the clubs mouth everything else is pure conjecture. Therefore this camp is refusing to dump on the kid as at this moment as he is a MFC player.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
