Trengove would be the youngest-ever AFL captain. He turns 20 on the 2nd September ... if he was appointed at the end of January (like Green was this year), he'd be 20 years and about 150 days. That's very young, probably too young.

Previous youngest captains:

David Dench (North Melb), 20 years 221 days, 1972

Haydn Bunton (Fitzroy), 20 years 299 days, 1932

Kevin Dynon (North Melb), 21 years 249 days, 1947

Michael Voss (Brisbane), 21 years 272 days, 1997

Wayne Carey (North Melb), 21 years 303 days, 1993

Maurie...its very much dependent upon the man ( young as they are ) . Some take to it like a DUCK to water !!

He has my vote. Not that mine matters.

Joint captains so we stop this terrible situation of our older players feeling unwanted.

Its time as a club we did things differently sometimes our thinking is limited.

so Green, Rivers and Moloney. Vice captains Trengove, Grimes and Jones.

No way! To me having joint captains smacks of 'not prepared to make a hard call so let's sit on the fence and keep everyone happy'. There are too many shrinking violets at Melbourne .... it's time to stop pandering to them. Youth is the future of our team. Let's make Jack Trengove captain, and demonstrate to the football world that we are fair dinkum about where we are heading, and are prepared to cut through the crap to get there.

I agree, funny bb I have not had a call fromm CC either

Perception is the players were unhappy with Junior being off loaded last season, Green is not alone in having a bad season and he has been a good servant to the club. If he has the support of the playing group I would keep him as captain, the fall out of changing this without majority player group support is to much to comprehend. I would be more in favour of keeping Green as captain and bringing in fresh faces as vice captains with a succesion plan in mind, namely Trengove, Frawley and Grimes.

Does he?

He should be made to be elected captain each year - as Maxwell has to do at Collingwood.

I would bet the LG changes significantly, and Brad isn't Captain.

And you are worried about fallout?

We had a Chernobyl event happen at that Geelong game, the club can take the 'fallout' from the embarrassment of changing Captains.

Grimey needs to focus on getting the park for 20 games a season.

JT for me.

How about 5 in a row. Then 10 in a season. In 2014 he can aim at playing 20 games. If he does that again in 2015, he might be in line for the captaincy in 2016.

I voted for Moloney, but this is worrying, given there is no obvious choice.

To be honest...it's too early to tell.

After a hell preseason let's see who still stands tall.

This club needs to take the usual methods to decide on what it's going to do, then do the complete opposite, because the list of bad decisions needs to end.

That means forget the safe mid 20's, had a good season, passionate Demon, he's proven to be a flat track bully and can't cope without a dominant Jamar.

Time to revamp the club, bypass any connection to the recent past, those players have failed dismally to lead.

Trengove is hard as nails, tries to hurt the opposition physically, kicks goals, rarely goes missing and will only get better.

Speaks well in the media without giving us the company line every time.

I've never been more certain of a true leader. It'll be yet another mounting disappointment if anyone else is captain, and it damn sure better not be Green again.

JT for me. Don't care if he's young. He already plays the most consistently and has heart. He's committed to the club, speaks well to the media, and is our future.

BG - have loved watching him over the years, but massive fail this year. Hope he stays to play though. Deserves a reward for his services.

JG - too little on-field time so far.

JF - Definitely good enough, consistent enough, but hate the idea of a full back captain. I want a midfielder.

JW - kidding? Not near ready. Maybe in 5 years time.

BM - Another good choice. Just marginally behind JT for mine, but would listen to any argument about it.

CS - used to think so.

NJ - see BM.

Leadership group next year to consist of:

Grimes

Jones

McKenzie

Moloney

Rivers

Scully

Trengove

Watts

Rivers to be given the captains role for 2 years with Moloney as vice captain before handing over to one of the younger generation from there. Preferably Trengove as captain and Watts as vice captain.

I would like to see Trengove get it but perhaps he's a bit young, so I have voted for Sylvia as it could be the making of the man.

Three of them played in premierships and another won three Brownlow medals. Three of them were captains on the day their clubs won a premiership. I'd suggest that the burden didn't weigh them down and that they were the right person for the job.

My choice ? Trengove - and only Trengove.

And the players unanimously voted Green in this year, the Geelong debacle was not Greeny's fault everyone in the playing group is responsible for that result. It's nothing to do with embarasment its to do with him having the support of the players. If he has the support of the players and gets the boot because the supporters call for it, then that will be great for cohesion between footy department and player group. Lyon will consider this as it is part of his review.

New coach will pick a captain along with players vote and Greeny needs to be considered along with all others mentioned.

and Vossy was Captain in 1998 when they collected the spoon. Change takes time should they have sacked him after his first season

If you go by the old adage that actions speak louder than words, then JT is the man on what he's been able to show in a couple of years. People who argue that he is too young should look at examples like our old coach Rowdy Daniher. "Neale begun his AFL career in 1979, quickly establishing himself as one of the best rising talents in the business. Neale went on to play 66 games in a row, become the youngest Captain in Essendon history at twenty years of age and win the Essendon Best & Fairest" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neale_Daniher

Out of all the Melbourne players seen front the media, JT has been most believable.. Fluency and articulation comes with age and experience. The way he dealt with issues such as the sling tackle with such honesty and integrity was very impressive in my opinion.

Give the man the responsibilty and watch him grow. He wants it more than any other player in that team and I reckon it shows.

Trengove for me - Lets build a dynasty around a young captain

Eg : One - Sticks Kernahan

Eg : Two - Wayne Carey

Eg : Three - David Dench

I am sure there is more however the 3 mentioned above all went on to become Premiership Captains &

where appointed at a young age.

Time to be bold Demons

So he can be removed as captain?

Trengove for me, and this is a vote way outside my normal line of thinking. I normally wouldn't be a fan of appointing one so young to lead the club, but I have zero confidence in any of our true senior players. Absolute zero. Until this year I'd always thought/hoped that our over 25s would be able to nurse the club through until one of the true leaders was ready, but that delusion has been well and truly quashed this year. Like the coaching team, the leadership group still reek of the muck that got splashed when 186 happened. They all have to go.

To that end I think Trengove is the most qualified of the under 25s: plays in the manner I'd expect of a leader, speaks articulately and has leadership experience at a junior level. Seems like the sort of bloke I'd want to follow. I'm not sure that he's "born" for it like the likes of Carey and Voss as Hannabal touched on, but given the dire state of leadership at our club I'm desperate enough to find out. Others like Frawley just don't seem like the right fit for me. I like Grimes but it would be crazy to appoint a captain whose career as a whole hasn't settled yet.

If I absolutely had to settle for one of our over 25s, it would grudgingly be Moloney for me. If it were any of the others I'd be livid.

Welcome to the club Nasher..weve arrived at JT for various reasons. If one was to overlay all the reasons that many of us consider his 'case for' then we compose quite a player. I think he is..and will get better. Hes a particulalry fine vintage this lad. ;)

I'm nervous putting so much pressure on such a young kid, but god Trengove is just the sort of player I know will be a long term leader and will lead by example. However, if it burdens him in any way or distracts him from getting better (and he does need to get better like every kid his age does) then I think we'll be kicking ourselves.

With that in mind, I really would like to see a duel-captaincy. I'd have Moloney and Trengove as duel leaders, and if Trengove proves capable he can have the role all to himself in 2013.

As for the rest of the leadership group, I think Jones get a pass mark, Grimes obviously is fine to continue on if the players support him, but everyone else need to take a long walk off a short leadership pier.

I want Frawley, I want Watts, I want McKenzie and I want Scully (but not if he's gonna lead from Western Sydney thanks  ). Davey, Green, Rivers, Sylvia, Jamar, all senior players who need to work their sh*t out or [censored] off, and the last thing they deserve is to be rewarded with leadership roles.

The one brave thing this club has done in my time was to tank for draft picks. I hope the next brave thing they do is to appoint a truly worthy leader regardless of age or experience.

Edit: it is a damn shame that Grimes has been injured this season (yet again), because this was his role to lose in 2012 I think.

People selecting Moloney still defies logic. He's a front runner just like the rest of the older players. Hasn't played one of his great games against decent opposition or away from the G this year. JT gets involved and leads wherever we play. Include Frawley, Garland, Watts, McKenzie and Scully in the leadership group.
