Jaded and the Tweed Pig - you sound like you've been reading too much of Mike the self flagellating Sheehan. and the 'very selfish' i think is unfair and flat out wrong.

I don't need to. I only need to look at the circumstances.

He's presently at best a B grade footballer who isn't in the top 150 players in the league, yet he won't commit to his football club that's offering him twice what he's worth. He's played 1 and a half seasons, but is being offered $600K, which will probably make him Melbourne's highest paid player. Despite the distractions to him and everyone else involved with the club he won't be rushed and is going to stick to his original decision which is to wait untl after the season. Even though his club is now copping adverse publicity through accurate, or inaccurate leaks to the media.

He's as selfish as one gets. I hope he cringes every time he sees Trengove defend his questionable character.

Didn't his manager state that Tom didn't want to know the terms of the offers and wait until year's end ? I think I recall that recently. Which is consistent with initial plans.

Ome will believe anything . How normal is this . You'll throw up something inane about it being his wish . Believe hat if you will but itflies in the face of natural curiosity .

So much spin of his management being bought by some.

It's a ruse .

He'll know the details, it's about him. He controls things, it's his way, very contolled. Nothing about this is accidental etc

I fully agree with your sentiments Tweed Pig. If the reports of our significant offer are true (and whether the figures reported in the media are accurate or not, the offer will be significant), then to procastinate on making a call is unfair, particularly if he already knows where he's headed. It's one thing to leave a club that has invested in you, but it's another not to give them time to cover the loss. I genuinely feel as if he has little respect for our club - that he is basically giving us the bird, and because we are deparate to keep him, we're letting him give us that bird. What makes it worse is that he is also putting his teammates under pressure. Every time they front the media, they have to field questions about what he is going to do and how the club is coping with all of the attention. That is completely unfair and certainly not the actions of a team-oriented man. It's not up to Jack Trengove or Brent Moloney to take the heat. It's not up to Dean Bailey to answer questions about it ahead of each game or Jimmy Stynes at his President's Lunch. If you want to take the dough, you have to accept the responsibility that comes with it. You can't on the one hand play the naive,media-shy kid, then on the other take the fat cheque that is the normal reward for deserved recipients.

Agree.

I believe that Scully should be able to make his decision in his time frame, but he should shoulder the burned for this. He is doing less media than other comparable players such as Trengove, because he is being shielded from the media feeding frenzy that is created by him. Let him make the decision in his own time, but let him deal with the spotlight that it brings.

I don't think the MFC has been destabilized at all. The Press would like to see it happen, but i think the MFC has been rock solid.

1. The MFC have always backed their man Tom Scully on all fronts.

2. The MFC have offered a great contract offer

That is all that has happened. The media are just writing shite like most of Demonland is....we are all just treading water.

But i find it amazing that people are saying the MFC are under pressure and cracking!!!! Leave that to the Saints during trade week!

I admire the support that both of you are providing Tom and the club in this situation. I too hope that he remains a Demon for life. However right now the elite leadership qualities that made him standout as a draft pick are not obvious to me. It's been left to others to convey his character strengths - Tom isn't doing it himself. Whether it's fact or fiction, the perception that has been created at this point in time is of a kid holding out for as much dough as he can get and not as a someone committed to our long-term cause. Silence can be deafening. If he won't provide comment about his intentions, the media, right or wrong, are filling the vacuum and doing it for him.

Hangon007, with respect, I'd be interested to know if you were in Tom Scully's shoes, how would you justify to your team mates that they have to deal with constant questioning about your contract situation when fronting the media week in, week out? Particularly when you're not volunteering to manage the situation publically yourself? Would you think it's fair to let others take the heat for you? Is that how you establish a reputation as a team-man early in your career?

Which ever way it goes, Tom is positioning himself for a massive pay rise. With big money comes a big responsibility and that includes fronting up and being accountable for your actions... not letting everyone else do it for you.

The media is driving the speculation not Tom. The boys all understand the game. Just like I would cover for any mate when they were under constant attack .... maybe I would think they might do the same for me. JT is a very smart kid he fully understands the game ... unlike many around here.

Sorry, but you cant expect Tom to hold a media conference every time some people cant get whats happening. Otherwise he may as well have a 24hr press conference 365 days of the year.

Tom has said, give me till the end of the year.

The media are feeding on the speculation because Tom isn't saying anything. He has to take responsibility for this. He has created the situation. Again, with respect (which I'd appreciate you showed in return) the situation has changed since his media conference at the start of the year. At the point he insisted there hadn't been an approach from GWS. Now there has been. The stakes have been raised. The players and administration have been covering for him since February. Enough is enough.

Nope you are not looking at the "circumstances". Sorry but you are not listening. Instead choose to believe media driven speculation. But that is your choice.

Our players are a great bunch. JT will happily defend Tom.

If by some miracle Tom Scully decides to stay at Melbourne there will be tremendous scrutiny on him next year and beyond, he had better be the champion that those predict it so.

There are so many on here, and I would imagine among Melbourne Football Club supporters, that have had a gut full of this saga and the obscene amount of money we have offered him. If he stays he had better be worth it, if he goes and doesn't live up to the hype i would say the caning he will cop will make previous high profile player failures pale in comparison.

His knee will probably be an ongoing problem as the club have said he is an over trainer and to completely fix the problem it needs rest, the thing that makes Scully stand out is his superior fitness, if he can't train then that's a worry isn't it?

$600K per annum for 5 years with a dicky knee, hmmm. Let's see, Aaron Hamill, Troy Simmons and Nathan Brown, what did they all have in common?

No problems. No they (the Media) are feeding the speculation because thats what sells newspapers.

Tom asked for time, all the boys know that. Yeah I appreciate the upping of the anti but Tom is merely sticking to his word. Velocity sports are not stupid, they understand the game. (Dont get me wrong I would love Tom to end this ... but its clear now that wont happen ... I can now fully understand that)

"The players and administration have been covering for him since February." Yip and they will willingly continue tooooooo till the day he makes his final statement. Tom is one of us, thats what we do.

Scrutiny from who? Any more or any less than any other number 1 draft pick?

Interesting way to look at one of your own. Ahhh well each to their own.

Of course they will cover for him until the time he makes his call and I agree, that's what good teams do. However it's a two way street. It was Tom's decision to take this approach, he needs to be visible in all of this.

Hang your hat on "natural curiosity".

I'll wait until Spring and let them deal with it then. In the meantime Sunday is a day I'm looking forward to against the Hawks. Footy.

He has. He has been 100% visible. The rest is just pure speculation. The media grab speculation and twist it ... sorry but thats the rules of the game. Twist to appear fresh and new.

Sorry but many around here, just dont understand the motivations. Many are not written.

Tom's decision ... well I'm sure Velocity had a say in this. But they are not stupid, they have done it for a very valid reason.

No disrespect ... Why doesn't he hang his hat on ... I dont know or understand what is happening I'm getting very frustrated ... so I will call the players names to make myself feel better.

Demons rally around besieged teammate Tom Scully

It didnt take long to Jay Clark to change his opinion.

Yesterday:

TOM Scully's dissatisfaction with Melbourne's administration is a key factor in him leaning heavily toward joining Greater Western Sydney.

Today:

A consideration is likely to be the fate of Bailey, who is known to have a close relationship with Scully.

Glad Jay didn't do anything to raise my opinion of his work.

... and, in line with my earlier comments about free advertising for the club brand and its sponsors, note the colours and Hankook logo in the photograph accompanying Jay Clark's piece.

You just can't buy that much exposure!

Go Dees!!!! Its a grand old flag its a high flying flag the emblem for me ... but is it the emblem for all around here. :o

Posted

The media's treatment of this 20 year old is bordering on, if not well past, disgusting.

Posted

Disappointing last couple of pages really.

If we were in his shoes we wouldn't have an issue - we would all pay to play for the Dees...

So stop trying to "be in his shoes."

It's a big decision and we can wait, whether the club wants to or not, and he has his self-interest at heart, of course he does.

A persons contract is inherently a selfish proposition. With two contracts that are unlikely to change, Tom waiting does not make him more selfish.

And, an injured player suddenly doesn't have a lot of "time off," in fact it is probably the opposite.

To turn around now and make a decision is giving in to the BS that has flewn about.

If I had his ear I would say "Frack 'em, make the decision when you repeatedly told them you would."

And it is complete MFCSS to construct a future where both scenarios are terrible for the MFC.

As in - 1. We lose our best players.

2. We have an overpayed dud.

3. The attention this is bringing is hurting the club.

In this scenario, the present and any future leads to the MFC being screwed. Healthy...

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
