The MFC doesn't do Queen's Birthday right

We know what it means to us, we're the dedicated of the Red & Blue supporters. But the club as a whole does not do enough for Queen's Birthday.

There are only two occurrences in the AFL season where there is only one game on a particular day. The first gets a full house at the MCG year-in, year-out. The second was nearly removed due to falling attendances a couple of years ago. Why?

I believe it's completely underpromoted by the club.

The club should have come out yesterday with the 'biggest clash of the year' stuff. We should be building up the history. The clashes in the 50s. The great games of the 2000s. The draw. Turn it into a huge spectacle. The rising MFC versus the powerhouse CFC.

While we may not turn it outright into ANZAC Day II (simply because of that sense of occasion that ANZAC Day has) we also need to realise that we are really squandering an opportunity here.

You can mark it down now that if we give them a run/beat them they will say, "well we know this is their grand final". It's such an arrogant comment they make every year after Paul Gardiner said it ONCE during a really bad year.

It's a massive clash for us, but it's the equivalent of ANZAC day nothing more.

As for our promotion of it, we've got to be careful that we're don't make it tacky. Are they still doing the walk to the G this year? I did it the first year and attended the second year, I thought it was pretty good.

It's the main feature of the club each year, they do more than enough to promote it. As has been mentioned, it is still just worth four points, if the club carries on too much then they can look stupid for treating like "their Grand Final".

I think the club is conservative about it because there will be a day when we don't celebrate Queen's Birthday anymore. For most people (actually, probably all), Queen's Birthday means nothing and it's just a day off. Yeah, it might be the only game on the day, but you can't expect it to be any bigger than any normal Friday night game.

There's no real history in the match outside of the Melbourne and Collingwood rivalry, which has essentially been dormant since the 60s. No one cares about what Queen's Birthday is.

I don't think if the club promoting it any more would help any apparent crowd drops. I mean, how coincidental that they drop when we're "winning" wooden spoons. The crowds get to as big as they're going to get, dictated by the performance of both teams.

Agree - getting it live on free to air TV would be a huge bonus as well.

Non Essendon/Collingwood supporters would attend ANZAC Day jsut because the whole day is a memorable event. Start by going to a Dawn Service, have a few frothies with the Diggers over bacon & eggs, then straight to the MCG to be among 80k+. Great atmosphere.

What does a Melbourne/Collingwood clash do to generate the interest of outside supporters? Bugger all. Maybe if we were a premiership team playing exciting footy on a regular basis, that might see a few more external supporters come along, but other than that, the Queens Birthday Holiday is just a long weekend for most people, and a good chance to get away with the family before the dreaded Winter run of no public holidays hits (the next public holiday and/or long weekend isn't until November).

While we appreciate the fact that Collingwood give us this game as a home game, we are not a Club that attract opposition supporters, and we should be grategul for every person over 60k that we get. This isn't a final, and putting it up next to the ANZAC clash is not doing any justice to the April game.
