The Liam Jurrah Story

As many of you on Demonland will know, I have had a long association with Liam Jurrah, his family and the wider community of Yuendumu, going back to 2002.

Anyway, after being pestered by many people, I finally decided to write a book about Liam's journey from a teenage desert footballer to an emerging AFL star.

The book, 'The Liam Jurrah Story: From Yuendumu to the MCG' will be published by Melbourne University Publishing and released on 1 August.

I know Liam is much loved by most Dees supporters, so you should all find it a fascinating and enjoyable read, enabling you to learn a little about Warlpiri culture along the way. you will also get some insight into the enormous hurdles and obstacles Liam has had to overcome to get to where he is today.

It also explains - for the first time - the full story of how and why Liam got drafted by the Dees and why Collingwood missed out!

Congratulations on the publication, and looking forward to what I'm sure will be a great read!

Nice one!

Well done RudeBoy I look forward to reading your book and I will

get some copies for the Christmas stocking as well.

Will it be on general release

in book shops and will it be available from the MFC?

Yes, on both counts.

The publishers and I are currently in discussions with the MFC to help promote the book.

A book launch would be great.

Well done!

Great to hear from you again RudeBoy. I look forward with anticipation to what I am sure will be an enthralling read for all the Demon faithful, the football public in general, and anyone interested in indigenous affairs or human interest stories in general.

Hope you have the opportunity to update it in 10 years time with an extra 5 chapters detailing the four premierships, five coleman medals and two norm smiths etc

Hope you make a quid out of it Rudebuy, publishing is a tough business

Looking forward to it - a great story to tell

I'm sharing the publishing royalties with Liam and the Yuendumu football club.

Well done Rudeboy, count me in for many copies...

An exciting event for all of us. Knowing the woman from University Publishing who worked with Liam I know this is going to be a special book. Football lovers will engross themselves in the story of our hero. But others who want to get a deeper insight into Australian indigenous culture will find it truly informative.

I hope the motives in writing this book are sound. It will be interesting to see how it reads.

Hopefully it is a story primarily about Liam as opposed to a story about 'the author and Liam'.

RR. You must not be aware of the incredibly significant role that Rudeboy has played in Liams journey - many on this forum already are.

He has been Liam's Melbourne family long before there was any reality of playing AFL. And l know from Liams family here in Yuendumu, and Liam himself, there is no one better placed to tell this incredible journey from here in the desert to the MCG. One of which all Warlpiri people are very proud. This book may help people understood just how hard and unique that journey has been, even to make it to one AFL game - and indeed how proud Melbourne Footy Club can be of its role in this history.

Martin Flanagan in today's Sunday Age - Liam Jurrah - a story as big as the land

Another great piece from the leading football journalist in the land.

I must confess that I had some misgivings when I heard that the Liam Jurrah story was going to be told because of the fact that it's so early in his career and that it's a team sport rather than for individuals. However, I now understand a little of what the book's all about and I can't wait to get my hands on a copy!

Great article. Martin Flanagan is a star.

Liam Jurrah is my favourite player at the dees by far and I think the footy club have done a terrific job with helping him feel as comfortable as he can. I do have my fears tho. This year it just looks like he isn't playing with the same care free attitude he's had the last couple of years. This could be a number of things but to me I think the coaches and perhaps that the general public are pushing him to put more defensive pressure on (which they should).

Rudeboy what are Liams football goals? Does he want to play 200 games for the dees ect? He obviously has already achieved a great feat by playing 1 game from where he's come from.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
