Pathetic crowd

If ever there was a game where Dee supporters needed to show up, that was it. Under 20,000 was embarrassing and we wonder why Melbourne supporters are the butt of everyone's jokes. All those people who spat the dummy and stayed home should be ashamed.

Mother's Day.

Raining.

Interstate team.

Are these reasons or excuses?

Some on here don't believe in reasons so yeah, we are pathetic.

My Dad & i were there!

I was there and I remember when we used to get 14K to these sorts of games.

The weather pre-game did us no favours... nor did mother's day or the way we played against WCE. Would have liked to see another 5k, but all in all not pathetic.

Add to that the fact that were were insipid the week before. It all pointed to a shocker.

It's worth it to help the team get 4 points.

What's pathetic is this post, IMO. To suggest that people 'spat the dummy' is suggesting that supporters have an obligation to go; they don't.

For many people getting to the footy is a 'sometimes' thing and, all things considered, the crowd figure was okay.

Those who make misinformed jokes about Melbourne supporters are the joke. You might want to ask them which Club kept smashing membership records despite holding up the ladder, or which team's supporters has responded most generously to a 'call to arms'.

Quite simple really.

Those who could have gone (had no prior engagements), but chose not to must question their loyalty to the club. Even under the most trying of circumstances.

Those who did turn up, were treated to a 4-quarter effort of pure hunger, brilliance and domination. Those who showed were rewarded for their faith, those who didn't weren't. As for Mother's Day, weather, previous weeks showing, etc. These are just excuses, plain and simple.

19,987 were there. Of those, there were some, not many, but some Crows supporters, some supporters who probably are not members of the club (and i even saw 2 Essendon supporters at the game). We are supposed to have over 35,000 members. Half did not show.

It's when the chips are down, that we must rally behind the boys. The 3/4 time standing ovation from the fans said it all. As well as when Greeny went over to the Southern Wing and thanked the supporters after the game. True appreciation, from players and fans. That's what you go to the footy for. It's just too bad so many chose not to show up.

For what it's worth, there wasn't much rain throughout the game. Just a trickle here and there.

I flew back in from NZ for the game. Good thing too! After last week's effort I was going to stay an extra day for Mother's Day but decided against it.

Couldn't believe my luck!

I'd been pondering the crowd myself. Adelaide fans travel the most out of SA and WA teams, that was the smnallest turnout of Crows fans i've seen in a while and not just at Dees games. But still at least 1000.

I walked past gates 1 and 3, there were plenty of people queueing for tickets, not thousands, but hundreds, I didn't stay around to observe how many were doing this, and the majority of them Dees supporters. I'm beginning to think our membership figure is a bit rubbery, like many other teams in the comp.

Oh and I should add, unfortunately I'll be in Sydney this weekend, otherwise I would attend Etihad like I always do when we play there.

I wouldn't get too skitzed over this guys.

Agreed. Looks better and is better financially if we have more attending whenever possible.

However, numbers will only improve significantly with success IMO. Until we have a halcyon type period with a premiership or more, we aint gonna break too many attendance records i don't think.

But for Sundays's game. Say we take off 2,000 to 3,000 to allow for Crow eaters. You get about 17,000 to 18,000 Deminions. That's about 50% of our membership base atm yeh.

If we somehow managed to get 70% of our membership base attending, which would be most unlikely at most standard home/away games other than say Queens b'day. That's still only 25,000 Deminions (approx) and add 3,000 Crow eaters... max say 28,000 at this point of our membership tally. I think 30,000 is break even (approx) at G isn't it? So we still miss financially even with an unlikely and probably unrealistic 7 out of 10 members attending. Yes, i'd prefer 28,000 attending any day of course but i think you get my drift here.

However, lets say we have some major success over next 3 years (wishful thinking!) and membership improves to 50,000 (woo hoo!).

Worst case scenario: We have another Mother's day game against Crow eaters or Dockers etc. 50,000 @ 50% + say 3,000 crow eaters again. 28,000 (approx). Ok, at the end of the day it's probably still a marginal fail financially, but it's a realistic number and looks a whole lot better for us on tv coverage and in press/radio reports etc.

Now lets take it to another level. Say we're on a winning streak and game aint played on Mother's day and we get say a more conservative/realistic 60% of membership base attending versus crow eaters/dockers etc.

Do the numbers... 50,000 @ 60% = 30,000. Add the 3,000 crow eaters. 33,000. All of a sudden we're in profit territory when playing interstate clubs here. More so when playing Swans/Lions, who tend to attract greater numbers than other interstate teams given they're old base of followers here. And the impression on tv etc. Looking a whole lot better me thinks.

Obviously the numbers look even better versus another Vic team using the major success scenario.

your assuming that one sunday 17K of our members showed up? half of that was probably non-members, so less than 30% of our members showed up to this game is the issue....

And what an issue it is...

The crowd was OK, last year we only had about 25K against Adelaide and that was coming off from memory a good game against Collingwood the week before, it was a nice Sunny Sunday afternoon not Mothers day. The club would of budgeted for 20K and that is what they got.

Reasons.

Add to that the fact that were were insipid the week before. It all pointed to a shocker.

From Memory we only had 25000 same game last year in warm balmy conditions

If our three home games hadnt have been against Brisbane Sydney and Adelaide it'd be different. This isn't a money making draw this is a winning games draw.

Call to arms begins at games. Those who turned up, well done, those who didn't and can think of many petty excuses should hang their heads in shame

if you were too soft to put on your scarf and beanie and get down there, you got what you deserved: which was to miss one of the best wins I can remember

next time harden up

We have the lowest attendance for a Victorian team

North have played the Filth and Richmond, while we have played GC @ the Gabba, Brisbane in Melbourne and Adelaide in Melbourne so that's not so surprising. We'll be higher than them by season's end. And if not, it'll because we have played 5 games against interstate teams at home.

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.

The Demons return to the scene of the crime on Saturday to face the wooden spooners the Eagles at the Docklands. Who comes in and who goes out? Like moving deck chairs on the Titanic.
