Loss A Deesgrace in the Hun

"They looked like they'd run out of steam, they didn't look fit enough ... they stopped taking risks. Psychologically, they seemed tired. It was unacceptable. We were in a great position at halftime. The boys stopped working for each other."

Jimmy applies a little blowtorch action, and not just to the players I would have thought.

When a bloke facing down cancer questions your mental and physical toughness, it's time to listen.

All good spin and media fodder for the bowing masses.

What Jimma says and what Jimma realises is actually happening on the ground are 2 different things. I am sure Jimma does not have to go to the Hun to pass those sentiments along. I think the players ears will be ringing about what is acceptable and what is not from the FD. It was a pathetic performance with or without a lightweight Hun article.

Another good example of MFC managing the media.

Someone at the club needed to say it. There's no one better to say it than the man himself. All we'd heard from the FD was how great a side the Hawks are. We need to see an increase in workrate from Davey & Moloney as well as Jones if he plays. Green has a chance this week to take ownership of the side & lead by example.

I was more impressed with Sheahan having a crack at Bailey's lame excuses after the game. Hearing Bailey use an excuse like "Hawthorn are a pretty good team. They'll be a top four team..." is pathetic to say the least. No, I didn't expect him to get stuck in to the players, but it wouldn't have hurt to say that the performance was unacceptable.

Posted

Completely agree. Bails praised the Hawks, Green says they're 'The real deal', that says to me we were expecting to be in awe and were not unhappy with the margin. Jimma rightly should be commenting on a lack of the senior players to step up under pressure and settle a rattled side. Especially if nobody else will.

When the hawks are under pressure they up their intensity and it pays off. We need to see the same attitude or we will continue to be swept away against sides like these.

Do you honestly think that because the FD say that the Hawks are a great side, that there is no behind the scenes criticisms and soul searching going on with the players? FWIW I dont what supporters expect to hear from a Press conference. Bailey does what he always does. He plays a dead bat. If he or anyone is going to critical, scathing or damning of any individual or group of players he rigthtly does it behind closed doors and to their faces.

Stynes presser is to give the anxious types a naive comfort that the club is actually unhappy about the performances. Of course the FD and Club aren't happy with the performance but they are not going to hand out criticisms through the media and they realise that there is a gulf between our young stars and the best teams of mature hard bodies.

did anyone see 'on the couch' on fox sports? Paul Roos said out of all the teams this weekend that Melbourne were the ones he was most concerned about. i tend to agree. nobody would've been talking about the gold coast if the hawks kicked straight. it was the way we capitulated that worried me

completely agree with Mike Sheahan - while stating the obvious - nobody loses as badly or as meakly as we do - Sunday's second half ws pathetic - and yes - DB carries ultimate responsibility - no mid field structure, no ability to break the zone from defence, just kick & hope - too much mollycoddling, not enough expectation. Off the field the ship has been righted - it's up to DB to deliver.

I'm not expecting the coach to name names. However some acknowledgement of our poor performance would be appropriate. Call a spade a spade for FFS. If you think Stynes is trying to manipulate the masses that's your opinion. I just think Jim answered a question honestly to tell you the truth. The fact is after saying it & if we lose this week after another insipid performance the pressure is really on.

You are right internally questions would be being asked, but to deflect criticism is to be unaccountable. There is nothing wrong with stating you were out played, or the performance was poor.

Good to see. For mine it was just as directed to the FD as it was the players. I sense the club is drawing a line and putting everyone( that needs to be) on notice. The time for talking has gone, it's now the time for doing.

I disagree that this is fodder for the media or succor for the naive . I believe there is genuine concern from the top and a public bake was due.

The honeymoon is over it's time to get serious. A line hasn't been drawn in the sand yet but the stick is poised.

Should be the coach saying that, not the president as much as Jimmy means to everyone. The club has clearly seen the omission of a public bake and Jimmy has stood up to fill the void.

Maybe just me, but I would've liked to see that come from Bails and it should've come automatically. I doubt Parkin, Matthews, Malthouse would be able to contain their rage if they coached during that second half.

That said, I wrote a blog that mentionined Bailey being calm and collected was a positive. Maybe I should read it again..http://wmth.wordpress.com/2010/05/05/reaping-rewards-of-the-rebuild/

RR, Are you Jimma's media man? You know what his motivation was? Do you write his press releases. Are you a MFC committee man, or just another "politician"? You do very well at the latter. Something had to be said and Jimma was the man to say it................ simple as that!!!!

The acknowledgement of poor performance is rightly done by the Club President. And he said the obvious from his position A media driven contrived setting like a press conference is not the venue to "call a spade a spade FFS".

I dont think anyone is defelcting criticism at all. If you going to make statements were out played or poor performance, then the last venue for that should be the Press conference. And do you honestly think the Press would say "OK, you were outplayed and performance was poor lets then move along shall we". The media would make a meal of a coach for that. Its just that criticism should be dealt out privately and not in the hands of the media.

Was discussing the comments (Jimma) with bro/law this morning. He a Woodie... We both fell that it was more directed at the FD than the players. The leadership( if there's any) will have a go at the players... The coaches will have a go at them all.. But public dissention is aimed at those who are supposedly orchestrating things. who's in charge of matchups, who's in charge of rotations , who job is it to rev up the team etc ?

I personally think that the comments effectively put a certain person on notice; time to deliver.

Bailey's dead pan attitude is really bugging me now. Show some passion man! Show some anger or discontent. No wonder the players cant get motivated to lay more tackles than the Gold Coast did with 12 debutants.

Paul Roos was spot on, we are the most concerning club in the competition with our lack of leadership and lack of game plan.

Watching some of those disgraceful efforts and turnovers in the back half again really highlighted how low we sunk on Sunday. The players literally gave up and stopped caring.

Very petty RR......very petty. You would go well in the chamber in the house on the hill. At least there, you can "spin" with the best of the bureaucrats. Sorry Rhino, it's complete dross to say that Stynes is engaging in 'media management'.

Just gave a straight answer to a straight question about what he saw on the weekend.

Probably what the coach should have done as well.

Just what the club needs a public bake played out in the media? Of course!! How unprofessional of the Club not to resort to pasting groups and individuals in the media!!!

Jimmy sent the right message in the appropriate mannner. Something had to be said. And it is appropriate coming from the President and not from the Coach.

The thing we all need to realise is that factors beyond all of our control are likely to inundate us, if such performances are meekly tolerated.. As any good business should, we need to plan for that contingency and be pre-emptive, rather than let us be overwhelmed by the media pack. These things have a habit of being self fulfilling prophecies. Ignore it at your peril.

The next 2 weeks will tell.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
