Rate the pace

I have read in the Tapscott thread by a couple of poster that he may not be "quick" - to be honest, with limited viewing I am not really sure.

I think it would be an interesting exercise to see thoughts on how we rate our players on pace.

5- Super quick 4 - Fast 3 - Average 2 - Below Average 1 - Slow

I'll rate a couple of controversial ones ( the first 2)

Bennell - first saw him I thought he was between average and fast 3.5 - but he seems to only go that bit faster than his opponents - Sunday the example of burning of his opponent and kicking the goal . I rate him 4.5

Jones - really interesting ! I sometimes think that he is slower of decision than foot - he at time can show really good pace - and other times looks really slow - but i think that is his decision making - I rate him 3

Jetta - can't figure him out as his elusiveness may make up for a yard shortness of pace ? 3

Davey - his pace and his decision making - 5

Trenners - 3.5

Scully - 4

On reflection - pace is also tied up with awareness and decision making - TJ seemed to be at a standstill but most times looked like he had an eternity to dispose.

Watts is apparently the quickest of the lot. He just hasn't made this apparent on the field yet.

Maybe a way for him to grow in his confidence? ... Love to see him tuck the ball under the arm, take a few blokes on and go for a bounce or two.

He knows how to deliver it, too.

Frawley is faster than most anticipate, refer to his run down on Jetta last year.

Jurrah is quick, and has that graceful float across the ground.

Bartram is quick of the pace, much like Watt's is reported to be.

Fitzpatrick is reportedly very quick as well.

I'm more concerned about our lack of pace with guys like Bate rather than Jonesy.

Watts & Frawley are quick for big men. I'll highlight the Swans game last year when they both chased Lewis Jetta. JT chased Lewis Jetta on the weekend and ate his dust.

Watts's pace was evident in a couple of passages against the Swans where it was a pure sprint to the ball in open play. On many occasions he started well behind the Swan's player and either got there at the same time or just after and tackled.

........ and deceptively agile for a tall. There were a couple of examples against the Swans where he was able to side-step an opponent and get an effective kick away.

being a fast runner is one thing...but in AFL it's all about the first couple of steps...and last couple before disposal...that's what makes the difference.

I'm more concerned about our lack of pace with guys like Bate rather than Jonesy.

I think this shows agility also comes into pace. The biggest knock on Bate is not his straight ahead pace, but the only pace he has is straight ahead - once he needs to turn it becomes his weakness - he has limited lateral movement.

Another interesting aside is that both in rugby league and union they constantly talk about the ability to "Step off both feet" as a prized asset - it translates in AFL to agility. We talk about Bate being slow - it is not that he is slow - he is just limited to any sort of pace in a straight line - his weakness being lateral pace and very limited turning circle.

I noted Trengove in a chace down the Southern wing on Sunday. He was never going to catch whomever, (cant remember), but he had fantastic endeaver, and he seemed to be making some good ground. My initial impression was that he looked quick.

Yeah it was Jetta, and Trenners didn't catch him, but Jetta didn't really pull away, so I say he made a real good account of himself.

You can be quick but can you be quick when you are fatigued. Scully isn't quick but he can run at a good pace for a long period of time, Trengove is the same.

I disagree , Both Jetta and Rohan made Trengove look pedestrian in identical circumstances on the weekend .

Both were coming off half back , Trenners looking like he had 'em both covered , they looked at him and hit the afterburners , Trengove could not stay with 'em ... Blown away .

Did you notice both times it was after turnovers when Trengove had just spent his initial burst one way, then was trying to keep up going back?

Both episodes were deceptive if you weren't paying attention.

I don't care who it is, if you have 1 player sprint 80m, then turn around and try to beat another fresh player in another 80m sprint, he will lose every time.

Trengove actually has very good pace, bordering on elite.

Gary Rohan however, is a freak.

Stef Martin was our representative in the Grand Final half time sprint the last two seasons. And didnt disgrace himself by finishing top 4 both times.

However as has already been discussed its speed going forward, combined with lateral movement, awareness and decision making all combined that make players stand out from the crowd.

Plenty of full-backs and full-forwards are probably super quick over 20 metres, I think thats where Watts' speeds have been measured quite highly at draft camps etc. Good for direct short-sharp leads, but of littler or no value to midfielders who have to run 20kms a game.

He's quick enough in the mind and off the mark... He's a little mild, in accelerating to Top speed.

Lewis Jetta is QUICK, with a high top speed as well. And sustained pace.

With Davey & Bennell, Jurrah, Scully, plus our quick talls, IMO, we are heading in a healthy direction. It would be nice to add to it.

Bennell did the same thing in the opening minute of last years Swans game .

Not sure who he blew to the weeds but popped it into the goal square and Dunn toe poked it through .
