Footy is back and Friday night we kick off the Footy for 2011. It can't come quick enough and we all expect a big year for the Demons. For me I think we will line up as below and we will come away winning both games to start 2011. People are bored, Rumours are flying footy is back to give us something real to talk about not what ifs.

Bartam Martin Garland

Grimes River MacDonald

Scully Sylvia Morton

Dunn Watts Green

Davey Jurrah Spencer

Jamar Moloney Trengove

Maric Jones Bate Bennell Jetta Strauss

Bail McKenzie Gawn

Strauss Rivers Grimes

Morton Moloney Scully

Trengove Watts Davey

Green Jurrah Jetta

Jamar Sylvia McKenzie

Bate Bail Martin Howe Bennell Maric Dunn Gawn

How many candidates do we have for the 9 point Super goal ?

Sylvia, Moloney, Watts, maybe Davey if he nails it ?

I see us lining up something like this:

Strauss Garland MacDonald

Grimes Rivers Bartram

Morton Moloney Trengove

Sylvia Watts Dunn

Green Jurrah Maric

Jamar Scully Davey

Bennell McKenzie Bail Spencer Martin Gysberts

I can't see Wonaeamirri being fit enough to make it, as he has missed too much of the pre-season.

I am unsure if Gysberts will make it, but I placed him in because if he is fit he is too good not be one of the first replacements for other regulars.

Strauss showed enough during the intraclub match, and even though doesn't replace Frawley, we need to get a look at him under match conditions.

Jetta has probably earnt a place on training form but I prefer others at this stage.

I am unsure if the Dees will line up exactly like this because I reckon Martin will line up on Tippett, but who knows their starting 18

Let's see some fire, boys. I can't wait for Friday!!

Green is best at FF. Jurrah can play anywhere near goal.

A few of them (Green, Watts & Jurrah...Bate) can roam around. I just name them in that position. Green can go out to half forward sometimes and mix it up, Jurrah can do just about anything but is more the KP player.

Two questions:

(1) What are the "new" rules (in summary) for this competition?

(2) Why would we pick players for this game(s) based on their ability to kick a 9-point-goal if they rule doesn't exist in the games that matter?

  • Visit the AFL site here for a summary, btw here is a link re:North's objection to the sides playing the first and second game.
  • I don't think there would be any emphasis on picking a player purely for the super goal. Super goals are just an added bonus if kicked from outside 50m. But Paul Wheatley loved them.

I would have thought Dunn and Green on the run were a better chance than Watts HT.

I cannot say I have seen every kick he has had but yet to see a goal from him approaching 50+ meters.

In fact he seldom has the confidence to go for a goal inside 50.

Watts kicked one from 55m at Etihad from a set shot

I would have thought Dunn should top this list after his repeated 50m+ goals last year.

Davey doesn't register many from that distance.

Agree. Dunn and Beamer on the run are the obvious candidates for me. Even Jones on the run.

Agree re Dunn, and Davey, although if Davey gets a chance to Buddy hook it they seem to sail through. The Freo comeback double fake masterpiece comes to mind.

McKenzie left out?

He performed well in the practice match too, I thought.

The must be managing his loads.

I agree again e25 this is getting too much.

I keep forgetting it is 9th Feb for god sake.

A lot of these guys will be eased into things, the first match is 7 weeks away.

Still like to win on friday though

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
