Bailey's speech on appointment of captain

Exciting year ahead, good choice in Captain and Vice Captains.

This will allow one of the young brigade to jump out of the pack over the next 2 yrs as a Leader, whether its Grimes, Scully or someone else.

On the other hand Bailey mentioned that Davey would be representing the forwards, saying that he's wanted to kick goals and wont play midfield.

This is exciting. IF there is one bloke in the side that opposition coachs wouldn't want forward kicking goals and being dangerous its Aaron.

So good decision.

Davey is too good to only play as a forward his field kicking, will give him more goal assists then goals scored.

the 16 other midfielders we have in the team should be able to sort out the goal assists ;)

Goal assists is probably what they want weaving in and out of traffic and hitting up Jurrah or Pettard.

I think that was a reference to Green while trying to eloquently say "the cap and three VC's will cover the ground." Just my take.

Agree.

His delivery into the forward line and around the field is far more valuable than what he can give us playing in the forward 50.

Davey as a full-time forward would be a massive step backwards. Won't happen.

Yeah, while Scully, Trengove et al will dominate the midfield for us, I think that a winger like Aaron will only become more valuable as teams try to tag/harass Scully and Trengove.

He might kick more goals though...

The opposition clubs will not be able to tag all our guns....those given Freedom must Punish.

Davey may often be left free if Scully & Trengove are Tagged, that's my take on Bailey's words.

Almost, but not quite. I think another guy by the name of Liam Jurrah would give opposition coaches more headaches than Davey. Not discounting Flash in any way, moreso stating the brilliance of LJ.

I won't ask.

Our midfield disposal is marginal. Take Davey out of there and it will be the worst in the comp.

I spose its all about getting the best bang for your buck from Davey.

Midfield should be covered with Sylvia,Moloney, Grimes, Morton, Scully, Trengrove, Jones, Gysberts, Tapscott, Bail etc.

which is the next generation.

Delivery by foot into the forward line you need your best skills. So I expect them to allow Davey to hit up the Forward targets or Go for goal, where being precise is important.

Davey for mine is No 1 in the team to carry out this task.

So playing forward is good choice.

Gotta admit I was thinking along the same lines as D74 when I read this line....“They really complement each other well, and having a vice-captain in charge of each of the back line, midfield and forward line will be beneficial to the team cause.”

I go to most games and I would have thought that Davey has spent more time as a running half back than a midfielder in the last few years, and he`s been absolutely brilliant at it. But...do the coaches now feel that our backline is complete and Davey with all his glorious skills can now be used to either kick a few goals or more likely, use his pin point passing to set up our forwards for more shots on goal, rather than starting attacking forays from the backline.

Having Davey as a half forward with a license to roam up the ground when required has a lot of merit in my opinion.

Goal assists is probably what they want weaving in and out of traffic and hitting up Jurrah or Pettard.

Unless they "bomb" it in, in which case the latter could be hoisted by his own Petterd :-)

Anyone who thinks Davey will be plonked in the forward line and left there is dreaming .

He'll be rotated through the midfield just like the rest of them .

Yep, maybe off the HFflank or even forward pocket, but really pushing high up the ground as far as HBflank.

Depending on the situation, then bringing the ball forward into our 50. I think he'll be most attacking between the centreline & HFline where he can use his speed & kicks to setup Young players starting out, Not to mention the Bobby Dazzler.

We'll need to start setting up our new Back flankers, ones with some size & speed to start to settle the new breed into our defence this Year. It'll be HOT for SPOTS! > Strauss, Bail, Bartram, Grimes, Trengove, (McKenzie), the mid sized boys. So I don't expect Davey or Bennell to start very often in our defence.

Gee but it's nice to have some real potential. Lets see who's gunna step up?

Exactly right re Davey. I believe he actually played a lot ad a high HFF last year who received the ball at half back and weaves through traffic to either break the line or deliver to HF and continue pushing forward from there. No real change to his role at all.

I like to think that Davey can contribute in the kind of role Akermanis offered at his peak with Brisbane - midfield rotation but often right in the attack, delivering into the 50 or making the judgement call to go for it himself.

Davey has the vision, speed and quick thinking as well as the precision kicking to be lethal going forward, and let's not forget he did originally make a name for himself as a run-down headache for opposition defenders.

It is possible the idea is to maximise his time on the ground, in dangerous locations where he has to be 'minded' even if he looks like he's just taking a breather, because he can suddenly become a threat out of nowhere. Every minute Davey is out there in a position to launch an attack, an opponent has to be with him.

Sun Tzu says "Attack where your opponent must defend, and you can directed his movements as if they were your own"

I'm quickly coming to the conclusion that the answer to the 'forward press' is a little shift back towards playing in position. We saw many times last year Melbourne would break loose and have that extra player up forward. For instance - if your opponent puts in 15 players to keep pressure on the forward zone, and you only send 14 or 13 back there, the moment you have a breakthrough it is 4 or 5 on three coming the other way - those numbers practially guarantee a shot on goal. All it takes is one smart, not even especially accurate, clearing kick.

You read it here first* (somebody let me know in 9 months if I am a genius, ay?)

*actually, probably not first, but you read it here.

Not really, I just don't think he'll go quite as deep into defence or as often. We have to develope the newbie defenders. Not pamper them. He'll prob's, go deep when backs to the wall, but I'd rather see him around the defensive 50to take the ball occaisionally, to bring it forward.

This would still keep our young defenders under a bit of pressure & responsible for their actions, and to make sure they setup the attack well. Davey should be on the end of this defensive attack to link & bring it over the centreline.I think this is where we could see the open forward zone with a tall, Jamar or a Spencer, or Martin, with speedie players rushing into the forward zone from behind the ball.

I highly doubt that Davey will play all his time forward this year, however, with the new interchange rules coming in there will be less chances for a mid to have a breather on the bench. They'll throw him forward for a spell due to this.

Davey in the forward line from time to time alongside the likes of Jurrah, Green, Watts and Petterd sounds pretty bloody awesome to me, especially when you consider you'll still have Sylvia, Moloney, Scully, Trengove, Jones, and hopefully the likes of Blease and Tapscott in the middle. Not to mention Grimesy sweeping across half back. Loving the options we now have!!!
