A torn pectoral muscle isn't the easiest injury in the world to deal with. The interesting thing is that it sometimes leads to an end of a career, and not just a season.

What is the pectoral muscle? The pectoral muscle is located in your chest and helps your arms and shoulders move and lift. It's a major muscle in your chest and covers the clavicle.

What is a torn pectoral muscle? When you tear your pectoral muscle the fibers of the muscle rupture. This is extremely painful, and they are varying degrees from strain to a full tear.

What are the symptoms of a torn pectoral muscle?

Pain, very severe pain in the chest area

Swelling

Bruising

Loss of a vertical lifting power

Loss of horizontal mobility

How do you tear your pectoral muscle? A majority of the injuries occur due to over work when lifting weights or other force based activities such as chopping wood. Bertrand's injury occurred when he attempted to tackle someone. The force of the player was too much for his pectoral muscle to absorb.

How do you treat a torn pectoral muscle? Depending on the severity of the tear it may require surgery. If it doesn't require surgery rest and treatment with ice and heat will help. Immobilizing and limiting the mobility of movement is key. When surgery is called for the surgeon will reconnect the muscle, but in most cases the muscle will never be as strong or as flexible prior to the injury. Rehabilitation with this injury is long and painful.

Does not look good for Chip.

How is one supposed to sleep now?

I am [censored] myself. Any mention of MFCSS and I will literally spew and throw my laptop into the wall.

The club making a "statement" sounds ominous indeed. Tweet us or something. [censored]!

Alan Didak played out the finals series with his pectoralis major torn clean off the bone.

If Chip has torn it off the bone, the club would have to send him to surgery at this stage of the season and his career.

If he has torn it but not off the bone it is a soft tissue injury that he can still run with to keep up his fitness. It will put him back this season no doubt. Don't know the exact timeline but 4-8 weeks sounds reasonable.

Either way, it is not career threatening.

Via twitter about a half hour ago:

chipa__8 James Frawley - "Thank everyone for the kind wishes! Shouldn't be too bad though hopefully only a few weeks."

I'm waiting to hear from the team before I get too relieved. Hopefully he won't miss too much if any of the season.

If he has to miss some, it is lucky we have Warnock. I know he isn't anywhere near the player Chip is, but he is still a good replacement should one be needed.

I've always liked Warnock. Although with the emergence of other players in the backline, I feel his only chances of getting in the side will come through injuries.

It is very important to have players like Warnock who are able to step on the field and fill a role if someone goes down.

Bailey must train em too hard, seem to always get injuries during the pre-season. Just a thought.

Pitty I know it is just a though but come on man. Perish the thought of footballers working hard in preseason, I mean they should be putting the feet up, chilling out and drinking heaps of bevvies after all. Bloody bailey for making them train...

How can anyone compare Warnock to Frawley? Frawley is irreplaceable at this stage.

I really dislike those self diagnosis websites referenced above, they are always worst case scenario. Would have ot be seriously unlucky if it was career threatening, although it could set him back a fair bit this season.

Triple M twitter- "Melbourne suffers massive blow with All-Australian defender James Frawley ruled out for up to three months with pectoral muscle injury." 6 minutes ago.

The injury occured on 20/1/11, our first match is 27/3/11. That's 66 days or more than 9.5 weeks.

Read in conjunction with Frawley's twitter- "Shouldn't be too bad though hopefully only a few weeks"- and I'm hoping that means he only misses the first 2-3 weeks of the season, 4-5 at most. At best it sounds like he could potentially be pushing for near the start of the season.

This does SUCK, but it could be a lot worse (this could have happened on the eve of round 1).

This injury is no doubt a set back, but i get the feeling that if it was really bad or career threatening we would have heard the full news from the club by now. Chip will be ok (Just do not try and lift so much again James ok)

Just an observation, but i hope it is right.

Edit-1 miute later the MFC website says Chip will miss 10-12 weeks....FFS!!!!

I've heard this from a number of sources and I find it hard to believe

I think its an urban myth, generated by filth fans to portray their players as superhuman

He might well have had a pec strain, but torn clean off the bone prior to the game? I don't think so

I bloody hope he didn't do this injury being silly trying to lift too much weight on the bench press. That would be a needless injury

Just like when blease broke his leg at school and tapscott stuffed his hip on the sprinkler at Casey.

10-12 weeks tho, not to bad considering. We have a bye round 5 from memory, so that's a bonus

Yeah, this could have been so much worse!

12 weeks from now takes us to 15th April. We play Gold Coast on April 17th, with a round 5 bye coming the week after. A conservative approach would see Frawley back on April 28th for an away trip to play West Coast- with Frawley missing a total of 4 games only (2 of which are against a Fevless Brisbane at the G and the new kids GC away, so pressumably easy wins).

If we played it even safer- a round 7 return against Adelaid at the MCG could be on the cards- that would be a conservative approach of a May 8th return, more than 15 weeks rehabilitation and missing only 6 games.

It does suck that we always get these injuries, but it will give us a good chance to see how we can cover for him in the backline. Also gives Warnock or Martin a chance to step up, hopefully everyone will be covering for Frawls and his absense isn't noticed too much.

Who do we think is going to step up in his absence? A joint effort? A knight in shining armour perhaps?

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
