Late pick gems made me look up Daniel Hanneberry today to see where he was taken. Pick 30 in 2008 and stayed in Melbourne for 09 to attend school at Xavier and got his rising star nomination in round 2 of 2010. Pick 30 and 2 years how good was the vision of that recruiter?

Then there is Luke Parker who went at 40 in the 2010 draft and played 13 games in 2011 but wait there is more Harry Cunningham recruited by the club with pick 93 overall in the 2012 Rookie Draft, before being promoted to the senior list in 2012. He didn't debut till round 1 2014.

Shows there are gems in the 2nd and 3rd round and I hope Kennedy-Harris at pick 40 this year develops as well

You can say what you like about the swans but they have absolutely nailed those picks. Common theme...strong bodied and hard working.

If you want to take a player via the FS rule you need to nominate them. The only time this could obligate you to actually take that player is if no other club puts in a bid, in which case you can use any pick you like on them. If another club does bid, we then have the option of using our next pick not including FA compo, priority picks and trades, or passing in which case the club that bid have to take him with the pick they nominated. We won't have to use anything earlier than our second round pick on him regardless (unless you think the Saints will bid pick 1), and that only if someone throws a top 20 pick at him. He would be rated as somewhere between 15-30 in this draft judging by the commentary so far, so it's a bit of a 50-50 whether we get him with our second or third round selection.

It's also worth reiterating that FS selections and bidding occur before the trade and FA periods, so we can't trade off our second round pick and use the third round pick on him instead. Once we have taken him that pick is out of play entirely.

The other common denominator is that Paul Roos oversaw the development of the above mentioned late picks.

19 touches for the Stingrays win over the Falcons. He looks well built for a bottom age midfielder, wins his own ball and follows up the contest well. Was generally neat with his preferred left foot. It seemed like he didn’t get as much game time as some of the draft age kids, which might also be because he hasn’t played as much TAC Cup this year with his school commitments.

Just watched Stretch's highlights. Looks like he knows how to kick to the advantage of his big forwards. Pretty handy in traffic swell, little unorthodox the way he goes about evading would-be tacklers but he gets it done.

He needs to put on some kg judging from what I saw.

In time there could be a good 1 2, Stretch delivering to Hogan.

Thanks Redlegs. That's what I thought and I couldn't understand why the phantom drafts had him as our second rounder. Forgetting the other compo stuff, I then wonder who our second rounder will be?

If we are committed we must be confident of where he will be picked.

Clearly this is part of the Father-Son process.

If we don't nominate him, his name is never brought up in the bidding and we can't pre-select him.

Now his name will be put forward, other clubs will submit their bids, and we get the chance to match if we so choose.

We are NOT tied to taking him, like the fears with being tied to selecting Viney.

Wasn't Port the team the placed a bid on Viney with their first pick? Not saying they're party poopers who will automatically do this again, just an observation that they were willing to give up what turned out to be Ollie Wines for Viney.

I don't think any club will take the risk on their first pick unless he is really worth it. It takes away the ability to trade that pick and we should make it clear that we are willing to let him go.

This is how Geelong began their full resurgence; through the acquisition (luck) of some good father/sons, good drafting/recrutiing (which i feel we finally are doing) and a culture overhaul (which i feel we are starting to do). Just saying.

While I agree Geelong's resurgence had a lot to do with gaining Scarlett, Ablett (x2), Mark Blake, Tom Hawkins (and others?) via father son selections, most if not all were recruited when the system didn't put a market price on them. Instead they got them for fixed positions in the draft - I seem to recall it was a third round draft pick. Imagine getting Gary Ablett Jr with a third round pick. That's value!

yes, but at the time gaz was considered about that value. it was the development that he experienced that made him the player he has become.

the real bargain was hawkins - he was valued #1 in his draft by a long margin and they paid relatively sweet fa for him.
