Are we scuttled by Olympic Park promise?

Tacked on to the election promise of $$ for upgrading Ballarat for Nth Melbourne, was a promise of $7m to upgrade Collingwood's Westpac Centre for a home for Netball.

Wasn't the recently announced feasability study into our potential move to Docklands to include a joint home with Netball ? And, does that mean that this possibility has now been scuttled ?

I cant believe we are even considering another training venue after just moving into our state-of-the-art facilities just a 10 minute stroll from our admin department at the Gee. The spacious gym is shared with Storm and Victory which promotes the "Melbourne" sporting brand and an obvious cost saving for us.

If it is going to be better, then why not? And it would be a 1 second walk to our admin department, because it would all be in the same place.

Im sure we wont be moving from a spacious gym to a broom closet - we would be getting even better.

I suppose i could be converted if enough money can be found or granted for even superior facilities but it must be remembered that we do have a 152 year association with the present precinct and the MCC provides the old AFL offices in the Southern Stand to us rent free !

If it helps move Collingwood into the Olympic park oval and keep them down there end of the precinct it might be good.

I'm still holding on to a dream of taking over their current training oval and building our own Westpac centre, containing everything we need at Gosch's paddock. The longer I think about it though the less likely it seems.

It makes no sense to me.

I agree E25, MFC needs to stay in the Melbourne Park precinct. The paddock is close enough and should be developed in to the "Kaspersky centre of excellence" complete with a venue for post match functions. I wont remind you that MCG was our home ground. Nothing burns me more than when I pass Punt road oval and watch the yellow/black ediface growing there while the Demons are sharing a paddock up tjher road and collingwood live in perfect facilities soon to get better. The foooty club really needs to be creative and more demanding given all we have been forced to give up. If the loss of our home ground happened in 2010 we would be compensated with a generously supported alternative. BTW how much government money is going to Tigerland?

Maybe I should have been clearer: the master's suggested dream situation makes no sense to me.

I don't have any issue with the current facility, but I have no issue with moving to a docklands facility if it is just as good or better and is more financially viable.

There are some fantastical suggestions of us developing the MOPT precint to better promote us as a club that will never come close to happening.

They are pure fantasy.

The move to Docklands would be funded by AFL, City of Melbourne, State Government and the sale of the lease at AAMI.

...

I don't see how we'd get money from the sale of the lease.

Seems unlikely to me.

I dont know much about these things, but I'd have thought opting out of our lease would mean we don't have a right to on-sell it.

I'm just guessing though, I don't have any experience in that area.

I'll take your word for it.

Iirc Collingwood for a start don't own the Westpac Centre, but they are now the sole tenants after Athletics Victoria moved out (fancy that, Eddie is on the board).

Obviously they still have Victoria Park in their back pockets.

Are we the only team that doesn't own our facilities? Do all the other clubs own them or do they lease them as well?

i'm not sure ...

i think the question should be which afl team owns there facilities?

i thought the bombers owned windy hill..turns out the bowling club does. i'm pretty sure the hawks don't own there facilities. they have a lease.

the saints have a lease.

Really? I always assumed Collingwood owned it.

Makes sense though.

I couldn't figure out why Collingwood would lease another facility when they could be putting the money into one of their own assets.

IIRC, one of the problems the new board had with the place we've just moved into was the price...

as in value for our money?? i would have thought with multiple tenants costs would be well shared, but are we getting maximum value.

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
