Spent much of the year recovering from the leg he broke last year. Came back to play at VFL level mid-way through the year and hit form. Was very close to senior selection by the end of the season - Luke Holmesby melbournefc

One of the most brilliant outside players I've seen for a very long time- great poise, speed and a tremendous kick. Lacked tremendous confidence in self worth in 2010 due to mainly soreness. Got pin out now and ready to bolt- this is his year-2011.Go Sammy Go Dees.

An underrated player whom could be anything within this star studded list.

Could easily become one of our best players.

Injury has pushed his development back, but that is all behind him & his leg will have actually healed to be stronger than before.

Can't wait to see him burning along the members wing.

This kid will be something special.

Does anyone know how his leg is feeling now that the pins are out. Is he training? Someone on here knows him I think. Time to talk to him and let us all know where he's at. A pivotal part of our future if he comes on as hoped.

Posted

I can tell you where he's at now.

He feels a million bucks and his leg is stronger than before.

Enjoy.

I cant believe he was apparently so close to senior selection near the end of the year.

Did nothing much for Casey when I was watching. I must have missed it. If so, fair enough.

I hadnt seen him play before injury and realise many posters have seen great things maybe 3/4 years ago.

I realise Im on my Pat Malone here but I honestly dont know why this kid has so many people thrilled.

Do you know this or do you just hope it.

You're right. All he showed at Casey were flashes and little else but ... he was severely hampered in that recovery from his injury is a long and slow process, especially in view of the fact that he was playing with a metal pin in his foot. That pin has now been removed and he's sure to be a different proposition now that he has the capacity to train full on and unimpeded and with a full pre season behind him.

Posted

There's a continual reference to his pin being removed, but he stated that the "screws in his ankle were removed". Is it one and the same thing ?

I am only cautiously optimistic when it comes to Blease. He's had a shocking injury, so I'll wait until there's some exposed form at a reasonable level. He's got pace, smarts and he's a good kick, but he needs to show that he can find the footy more often. I like the way he takes the game on given an opportunity.

Posted

Sure hope that all who saw him at junior level remain excited when he eventually debuts in the mighty R&B. But seriously he must be regarded as a "yet to be assesed" at AFL. Similar to Tappscott.

Posted

Injury has cruelled any exhibition of his talents and what I saw at Casey were small cameos that dont justify some of the over the top comments here.

I hope he makes big improvements in his fitness and his performance.

Sam played at our Junior club in the EFL, Nowood. His ability to finish is amazing and vary rarely makes errors. We were fortunate enough to have Sam Blease and Jordan Gysberts play in our winning u16 grand final.

Both great kids and very, very good footballers.

I have no doubts that you will be very pleased.

I support your point- however one cannot judge him on his performance so far at the MFC.However his performance as a 17 year old was quite outstanding. As I have said- in an earlier post - could be anything but this is the year to show if he has still got it.

Franky if you are old enough "think Keith Grieg". That is who he reminds me of.

yes BK remember him well, and unlike many supporters of melbourne and Richmond, thought he was great, clean hands, great mark, quick and long kick. Very tidy.

Looked good but IMO played too wide of Flower (and others) to say whether he was good enough to win 2 brownlows (esp. when Bartlett had won everything else that year), very happy to hear the tiges stormed out though.

I actually thought he was better than RDB when he described him as "nothing but a [censored] plumber".

Must say Im pretty happy to hear Blease may be that good in your opinion.

It remains to be seen if he is anywhere near as good as Greig, but that is who he reminds me of what little I have seen of him.

I saw a little of Sam as a junior and I was delighted when we drafted him. As others have said, he was lightning quick, made excellent decisions and was a beautiful long kick. If he can return to full fitness and bring those skills to senior football, Sam will complement our midfield to a tee. The jury is still out about what he can achieve at AFL level (especially given his injury), but based on his junior days he is an exciting prospect. He is the sort of player who will bring others into the game.

This kid is a jet.

The cause for optimism will be proven when he finally gets out in the red & blue. On top of some great U18's football, the glimpses I saw at Casey this year, as opposed to others comments, had me excited at what a prospect we have.

He extracts the ball from stoppages and is quickly out of traffic, he did this a few times at Casey which was great to see. It says to me he still has plenty of confidence in his abilities. I would much rather take that as a positive than a kid hanging around the half forward line picking up 20 soft touches.

The leg will heal. The kid will shine.

Were he and Tapscott at training this week and how did they look?

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
