This thread has a life of it's own, racist leanings, Jurrah as captain?

Wowee.....was there a draw in the GF? This place has gone crazy.

I reckon it's got nothing to do with him being indigenous. It's because he's a male. We need a female captain!

Best quote in this whole thread is "Don't call me ignorant. No clue, perhaps". They should bottle that.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, racism is a belief or ideology that all members of each racial group possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially to distinguish it as being either superior or inferior to another racial group or racial groups.

Whether you want to term it racist or condescending, whether the claim is true or otherwise, I think it's improper to single out someone as being unworthy for the position based on their race.

No, not just improper - highly offensive.

WJ Thanks for highlighting this definition. I believe that the Demonlanders are the best group in the world, and or the MFC is the best sporting club in the world- does this make me a racist- If so I can then tolerate being a racist.

We may be a minority, but we aren't a race.

I know you're being flippant but, really, it wasn't great what was said in this thread.

Actually JCB got it spot on.

I realise the way I said it was not great, but never did I mean it to be conveyed in such a derogatory manner. The internet can be like that sometimes (ala sarcasm!).

I have apologised.

Deezman, I agree. You have the balls to say what people are thinking except wouldn't with fear of being called a racist, condecending or offensive.

It has absolutely nothing to do with race, Brad Green will be a better captain SIMPLE.

Deezman original post was about race if he had just said Davey was not a good leader then that would be different but he had to bring his race into the post which was just silly. Oh and it doesn't take balls to say what people are thinking it takes the ability to read peoples minds. It takes balls to stand up against injustice or to fight against adversity. Deezman's post doesnt really meet that standard.

Hannabal actually got it spot on - everyone is racist, it's just a matter of the level.

I acknowledge racism is defined as involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. But doesn't everyone feel their own race is more superior???

My comment was not a massively racist remark like some are suggesting - merely pointing out what I have seen with the indigenous players during and after games etc (of course, we don't get to see what happens behind closed doors!).

So saying that I don't want an indigenous player as captain because they stick too much to their own kind/race is being highly racist, is it? Some people are so precious...

I am not racist and never will be and I proud to be so. On a side note - I crack up when I hear people say "I am not racist I just hate everyone" I laugh because what they really are saying is that they are just aggressive, try hards who have no friends. (It's actually quite sad also).

Thankyou for your input, Felix the Cat. But... how many times do I have to apologise and reiterate that what I had said came out as I had NOT intended!?!?

Agreed and I sure hope this is what eventuates.

For mine, I'm not a fan of having an Aboriginal captain. It's not being racist by any means... but I do feel that Aborigines seem to stick by one another a lot more - i.e. after games when they tend to all gather 'round one another etc.

That's just my take. Aaron is great in recognising and promoting the indigenous community and I'd like to see him stick to that leadership role (and be added to the leadership group!).

I'd feel a lot more comfortable with a Brad Green leading the charges.

Deezman havent you caued a stir!

I agree with you but I will say. Aboriginal players have been putting up with racism on (& off) the ground since the dawn of time. This forced them to stay close to each other, to watch each others back.

This fact along with the fact that more & more aboriginal players are coming from rural communities (Jurrah great example), and have a long road ahead of them to fit into the surburban lifesstyle let alone making it in the AFL. This alo causes them to stick together. Davey helped Wona, Wona helped Jusrrah and so on.

I would prefer Davey to concentrate on his game, and put omeone like a green or bruce, maybe beamer in charge - this has nothing to do with race.

If we were to give it to a young player my hope is Colin Sylvia. He lifted this year, and with the captaincy would continue to lift. He is hard as nails, and matured greatly since his early mitakes.

If davey does get the gig i hope he learns to lead the others as he does the aboriginals in the team as he is such a good leader.

That's exactly what I meant - well said Red&BlueBlood. Unfortunately, my wording wasn't nearly as coherent and as well-structured as yours.

Cheers.

Colin Sylvia?!

I have a non-racial reason why this cracker would be not the right person for the captaincy.

He has just got his mind right, and his football decent after his...issues, and you want to give him the captaincy?!

He should have less claim to such high an honour, and responsibility, as 10 other players.

sorry, you two lovers will have to find someone else for your menage a'trois

Stop baiting us, DC.

E25 can't help himself, and I posted here a long time before you came along...

I don't think I require your constant judgment.

In fact, let's analyse your posting patterns of late:

Seem to be centred around a few 'personalities' on this board, extremely flippant, and becoming indignant whenever there is a hint of accusation coming your way.

Hmmm?

but you told me lately we were both "s*** stirrers"

rather passe, I'd rather be a "provocative m****r f****r", much more new-age

E25 makes himself a rather large target, doesn't need your assistance

Tis the silly season, but won't last for ever

Was that flippant enough, doc?

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
