Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

If Nathan Jones goes...

not a single vote - really? I think the opposite.

Not this season.

I don't recall him having any games where he was clearly in the votes.

There were games where he was a valuable contributor, but I don't think much more.

Nathan is ( for him ) I suppose in that category that is neither essential to the club nor so standout that he stamps his own passport. He is distinctly motr. That will mean hes movable. Handy to keep...but not a priority.

I'm a big supporter of Jones and would be more than happy to keep him at the club, but if losing him meant attaining the likes of Andrew Gaff or Jack Darling, then it's just what needs to happen.

The Saints, in the window.

Last year they lost Ball to the Pies, & Armitage hasn't come on. May yet be traded out.

Jones is much like Ball, IMO, but can kick long goals, & is AFL hardened, ready for finals football. The Saints will lose Hayes in the not too distant future.

Jonesy was a keen Sainter as a boy. He could be a good fit for each other & for us.

Pick #24 wouldn't do it for me.

Any thoughts?

Rhys Stanley and Pick 24 too the Dee's for Jones and Pick 29 too the Saints.

I like Jonesy but we have too many similiar to all play in the best 22. Moloney, McKenzie, Bartram and Jones all in the one side make us vulnerable.

Sometimes I think people only want to manage the 'top six' list rather the whole team list.

Jones is 'value for money' in salary cap terms and worth the spot on the list. Good training attitude and seems to be an enthusiastic club person.

If if doesn't improve from here, he's worth keeping. If he improves a notch, then he's well worth keeping.

Gee we overrate our own. I know that Ball isn't the AA player and Best & Fairest winner that he was years ago, but Jones isn't in Ball's league.

One might say Jones isn't in the Ball-park !!!!

I didn't say that he was. Only that he plays a similar game & would be a quick fix/fit for the saints. I not been interested in Ball,, so haven't taken much notice of his football, so can't comment in any detail other than he's 'in 'n' under', wins contested footy & is a liability delivering the ball, can't kick over a jam tin.

So I reckon Jonesy may stack up well with the saints hierarchy.

No, they want to inject more pace. They'd have zero interest in Jones.

I know they need more pace.

I've been telling my Stkilda friends their midfield needs work for the last 2&1/2 years. They've tried to rectify that & Peake is helping.

But they also need in&unders. They don't have time on their side to develop such.

My post was based on trading him to the Gold Coast, Gaff and Darling will be top 8 selections for sure (maybe even top 5). Anything less than a top 8 pick for Jones isn't worth going for, GC have so many they can afford to throw one our way for a hardened proven midfielder to complement the likes of Ablett, Swallow and Rischitelli. A top 8 pick or keeping Jones on for a few more years, sounds like a win/win to me.

That would be nice, but even I don't think they'd give a pick that early for Nathan.

But we have time (3 years to get a tall or 2, up & going for our window. But, if we don't do it now, 2013 will arrive and our Big men won't be ready. Yes Jurrah will, & Watts should be right, but neither will play the He Man role.

The role that David Neitz, even if undersized by the end of his career, did with aplomb for us. And not forgetting Schwarta, who started as a fast mobile CHF, then finished in the role we need filled Now. That bulking strong big forward & ruck the OX did marvelously. But still must be able to chase & defend in todays demanding football.

IMO we need to get 1 elite CHB & one strong tall forward. Book Ends.

Then we need a tallish HBFlanker/Winger. Then another strong tall forward to insure we get one up & going.

I'd still try to trade for an mature strong forward on the cheap as well to 'temp' the position.

This draft will be regarded like the great draft that produced Frawley at 12 and Jack Riewoldt at 13.

It is high quality and deep.

A top 8 pick is not essential.

I'd trade Jones for anything in the top 20.

Why would GC trade when they can take him for free as uncontracted?

Fortunately this means I don't need to get started on the suggestion of a top 8 pick for Jones ...

Because as far as I can tell he doesn't want to leave Melbourne, if he did or he wanted the dollars from the Gold Coast, he would be there already. It makes me think that Melbourne are delaying re-signing him until after trade week, which is a good move because as I said, a high pick from the Coast or sign Jones to another contract, it's a win/win situation.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
