shane mumford and brett deledio!?

There's 2 automatic deletions from the squad, that we won't have to worry about making it before our boys.

If Harry Omg gets a gig before Chip, well... I don't know what, perhaps I'll post some strongly worded rantings upon message boards... but anyway, I rate Harry O as a footballer, but Chip has been so much better it's not funny. They both rebound, only one of them can stop anyone.

Both are very good selections. Deledio is a good chance to get the small defenders role.

Mumford has been outstanding as the first ruck in a side that came fifth. No insult to Jamar but he some worthy competition.

Its great to see Green, Frawley and Jamar in consideration.

All 3 deserve to be in the 22, wonder if they will pick 2 ruckman...

In reality we will struggle to get one in the AA side. But good luck to the boys.

Frawley has more disposals and almost double the marks. They'd be insane to pick Harry over him. Pity. I guess James can always get in next year...

Mumford has been the third best ruckman this year. Been outstanding. If Jamar missed out it would be ridiculous... but Shane's definitely a threat.

As for Deledio... nope.

Does the selection of 4 ruckmen in the squad of 40 suggest they'll pick a second ruckman in the starting 22?

I like your line of thinking...

Devils advocate time again.

They said that they would select the team as if they were going to play a real game. With Sandilands a certainty for the number 1 ruck spot, they are more likely to go for a backup who gives more around the ground rather than another hitout specialist. In that department Jolly has been far more impressive than Jamar, despite being thrashed both times he lined up against the Dees this year.

On the bright side though, if they stick to that logic Brad Green has to get in. He's played both midfield and forward roles and is a more well rounded and complete player than any of his rivals for the small forward spots.

According to the Hun:

In a departure from recent years, the squad is not named in position. Instead, the selectors selected the players they considered the 40 best performers of 2010."

In any case, it hasn't made much difference and you could be right when they announce the final 22.

From the AFL.com article

The final team of 22 will be named on Monday, September 13 in Melbourne and will reflect the best team balance as if to play a match

B - James Frawley, Brian Lake, Harry O'Brien

HB - Luke Hodge, Harry Taylor, Corey Enright

C - Dane Swan, Gary Ablett, Brendan Goddard

HF - Paul Chapman, Matthew Pavlich, Alan Didak

F - Brad Green, Jack Riewoldt, Steve Johnson

R - Aaron Sandilands, Lenny Hayes, Matthew Boyd

I - Scott Pendlebury, Mark Jamar, Nick Dal Santo, Lance Franklin

Trying to be impartial but reckon the 3 Demons have rightful claims to the positions they occupy.

Frawley has Fletcher, maybe Rawlings vying for his spot.

Green has LeCras, Hall maybe as well as other arguments such as Franklin starting & another player getting a spot on the bench.

Jamar has Jolly & Mumford and I go with Jamar because he beat them in 3 games. That has to add weight to his inclusion. Could go without a 2nd ruck altogether.

3 in the squad- doesn't mean they're in. We've seen suprises and weird inclusions before

Deledio has had a great year, and will challenge Riewoldt for the tiges Best and Fairest.

Let's look at it statistically...

At the end of the H&A season Brad Green sits 6th on the goal kicking ladder (55 goals, only 7 behind Franklin). Add to that the fact that he rotates through the midfield.

He's also taken more marks (also 6th in the comp) than any of the top rated forwards. It reads well...

Let's say they select three mid-sized forwards and three talls. LeCras (63 goals), S Johnson (57) and Green (55) should be the mids. Milne is the next best with 48 goals, but he trails Green by some margin in disposals, marks and even tackles.

Jamar is a clear second in hit outs (643). Sandilands (686), Mumford (490) and Jolly (480) are the others in contention.

Jolly leads the group with goals (21), Jamar & Sandilands (12), Mumford (4). Disposals are pretty equal. I'd give the second spot to Jamar on the ruck work numbers and the fact that he got the better of Jolly both times they met.

It's often more difficult to review the defenders statistically, but here's one. Frawley sits third in the comp for rebounds from 50. He's widely regarded as one of the competitions best stoppers, add to that his rebounding work off the backline and his ability to play tall or small and you've got your AA back pocket.

All three have a strong argument for inclusion in the 22.

Before Round 21, Frawley conceded the third least amount of goals for any defender in the competition (not sure if his rankings dropped, but I doubt it as he conceded only 2 goals in the last 2 rounds).

It would be a complete and utter disgrace if he doesn't make the final team, as he is CLEARLY in the best 6 defenders in 2010.

On your stats, Green also deserves to make the team, as does Jamar, but a lot depends on how many midfielders they're going to try and fit into the team by squeezing them into the forward/back lines at the expense of true forwards/defenders/rucks.

Harry O has improved quite nicely for the Pies this year it's fair to say and I had him in the initial squad... but there's no room for him in what will be a hard backline to crack into - Enright, H. Taylor, Hodge, Frawley, Goddard, Lake look the likely back 6 with Harry O and Malceski just missing out (possible bench for Harry O??).

Congrats to all of Frawley, Green and Jamar!! Frawley and Jamar the two likely inclusions and Green the unlucky one (possibly interchange with Jamar, Pendlebury and Harry O).

And yet pre-season some people thought we didn't have a player in the top 50...one even may have said 150! (though quick editing almost let that slip)

Posted

There are some shocking selections there. For example, the panel believes Jobe Watson and Brett Deledio are in the top 40, but Cyril Rioli is not. Nor is Michael Barlow, who doesn't get in, yet Steve Johnson, who missed a fair chunk, does (probably the right call on Johnson but definitely the wrong call on Barlow, he should be there).

Frawley should make it, Jamar's a chance but has to beat Jolly (which he should do given Jolly's first 6 weeks were crap) and Green has to beat LeCras.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
