Back PageLead has an interesting article entitled "Dare to dream, Demons" which looks at Melbourne's late run for the finals in 1987. Dare we dream for a repeat?

The ’87 version, coached by John Northey and captained by Robbie Flower, also appeared out of finals contention after losing three straight to Fitzroy, North Melbourne and St Kilda heading into the run home to September.

But buoyed by a 40-point win over Geelong at Waverley Park in Round 17, the Demons would win six straight, including a now famous victory against the Bulldogs at the then Western Oval in Round 22, to claim fifth spot (for all Footy Show followers, that was the game when Garry Lyon broke his leg) in what was then the final five.

Everything fell into place for us late in the season with Sean Wight and Brett Lovett memorable for their run out of defence which lifted us above the levels to which we had previously aspired. That last game against the Bulldogs and the tension as we waited for the result of the Hawthorn v Geelong game that determined our fate, the two sensational finals victories and the deadening impact of that run across Buckenara's mark in the Preliminary final by who ?

It's an absolute long shot this year but wouldn't it be great if Jimmy the President could extract his revenge on Hawthorn at last by beating them in a final this year?

If not we'll wait till next year to finish them off.

I'd be content with that too. But I'd happily take repeated events. It was so exciting back then in '87. My wish would be for all Mfc supporters who haven't experienced '87, to experience something like that.

Fwiw, there are similarities. Touch wood, I just hope someone doesn't go down in Rd 22 with a broken leg and gets carried off on a stretcher.

Thanks for the memories. I attended all 3 finals in '87. Probably my happiest days as a life-long Demons supporter, even including getting to 2 GFs.

I also have a dream. We make the finals! I have a dream... That we win the first week; Collingwood loses. I have a dream... That we beat Collingwood in the second week...by a point...so they tumble out of the finals 0-2 after finishing top. Is my heart getting ahead of itself?

In contrast, my head is saying that a young side will "stuff-up" at least 2 of the next 5 weeks through inconsistency. There is also more development to be done rather than short-term planning for a largely-meaningless finals appearance. We need to find out if Maric is really as good as he appeared against Sydney. Tapscott needs 1-2 games to get a taste before a big pre-season. Should Maloney (whom we know) have another week off to keep a younger guy in the side for assessment? It's pretty hard fitting them all in at present! I think that 70% of our selections still need to be future-thinking & 30% about today. It's still really about 2012-2013 when we're a real chance of a premiership.

But a old supporter's heart can still dream.

OK Here goes, I' d prefer Watts to take a hanger in the back line get a 50m penalty and drill a torp from 65m out after the siren. Then the NikNat fanboys would shut TFU!!!!!!

Wouldn't knock it back this year but don't think history will repeat.
