Jack Watts out of contract at the end of the year

Never suggested base wages.

But do you think the Gold Coast will have a nibble at him and pay above his current market value?

Never said it was you. It was a response to some of the thought provoking dregs that came forth

Do you think the Club would invest a No 1 pick in Watts and allow him to woops slip to GC? Now think about it. Seriously.

Fair enough.

I guess one would hope that the club plays it smart in one of our most important contract negotations going forward.

everytime i saw him on tv he was falling over :\

so did the other players but every week he plays he falls over, he doesn't seem to be able to stand up

He'll be right next week, where @ etihad. Next Sunday @ 4.40PM. Roof shut. He might stand up, next week?

If he was pick 45, I'd agree with you but he's our number 1 pick! His manager will be demanding a serious contract.

Does it matter what number pick he was!

If a player is not up to it does matter if he is 2 or 52.

It should not matter, he should be at Casey.

I am no fan but surely he needs to get out of the spot light.

At present he is not playing well and a run at Casey will hopfully give him some confidence.

Take the poor kid out of the spot light before he gets run over by the "Stkilda machine"

They will kill him next week if he plays.

I reckon it does. Pick 1 is a massive investment.

No doubt we have all made bad investments at one time or another.

The trick is knowing when to cut your losses before you drown in the egg on your face.

Now having said that I would make him a reasonable offer for next year but if his manager thinks there is more on offer at GC

so be it.

How much do you think he is worth?

100 big ones seems enough for me at present unless he turns in some game winning performances at Casey.

That might increase his worth.

He'll get about $400,000 for 2 years imo.

I think that's about right. May be a fraction less but with performance components to enable him to earn more as his output improves as we all hope/expect.

I actually thought he was better today as I've been very critical of his last few weeks. Certainly better than Miller and Jetta in the forward line anyway.

An incremental step up from his existing contract. Like most players would get on their second run around.

Rocket surgery at its best!

This really is like his first season not his second. He'll bulk up over the next preseason - there should be plenty for the coaches to work on.

We should sign him for three years.

He is a talent - look how long Jamar took! He'll be right in time.

$350,000 for 2 years, just to ward off the new teams. They may however counter with $600,000 for 3 years...

The kid didn't want to nominate for the draft at one point because he thought he might get drafted by West Coast.

Doubt he's going anywhere.

He wasn't on his own for slip sliding today.....development wise Jack Watts is a long long way off the pace. Some people need to recognise this more closely and be a bit more understanding.

I like everyone would love to see him taking big strong grabs but he has work to do in that area. I thought Gerard Healy summed his approach up well by saying 'he needs to show some more urgency when going at a contest'.

We all see things differently and IMO I actually thought Jack was more productive and arrived to the ball a lot more today than he is in most of his games so far, sure it didn't all work out great but he seemed to be getting around as a target a bit more often.

When LJ is ready to come back in,Watts should go back to Casey and kick 4,6,5,3,7 bags to get his confidence back.

He needs big hauls at VFL level before he moves up to AFL level.

In his defence, you wouldn't want to be a forward for the Dees at the moment, today the midfield got smashed which heaped pressure on our backline and cut off supply to our forward line,it was amazing Bate kicked 4.1 today.

Agree with that.

I think it was in the last quarter where he saw an opportunity to intercept an Adelaide kick and really went hard at the contest, to create the loose ball.

I don't think he is soft, and IMHO what he really needs is one really good breakout game to shake some confidence into him.

Please don't forget that to date, he has played in ONE win. Generally, when we lose, our forwards get little or no delivery, so honestly, what can you expect from him?

He had just one less mark than Bate today, and like Bate, all of them were uncontested. The difference was that Bate played very close to goal, so was able to create some scoring opportunities, but probably the best goal of the day came from a Jack Watts pass to Brent Moloney. So really, give it a rest.

Off topic but everyone was slipping over because it was raining most of the week in Adelaide.

Back to his contract, yes he is an investment. He is starting off slow but we will get the reward in the end. Only time will tell. I'm more for rewarding guys like moloney, Jamar, Frawley who play well. Jack like most of the world should get a pay rise when he deserves one.

Yep. I thought he looked pretty good leading up the wing against Collingwood and he did more of the same today. He is (slowly) learning that you can't just stand there and wait for things to happen at this level no matter what talent you have. When he works hard to get in front he looks good but when he doesn't he is a spectator - it's now up to him to decide what he wants to be.

My more pressing concern is why Brad Miller keeps getting games. He will never improve and in 4 games out of 5 we might as well have a pot-plant in his position for all the use that he is.

Watts doesn't look like he will make it. Nice fella but got no apparent smarts when playing senior AFL.

Other even younger players are doing well around the league and he is not seen to be developing yet, at all.

If his name wasn't Jack Watts, he would not be getting a game.

We only want fit, desperate players, so any who coast and don't have 2nd and 3rd efforts are not required.

Some of our players are sure to be embarrassed after today. Probably as many as 15 all up.

It will be hard to look a few in the eye and ask them where they want to be traded to! It must happen Bailey!!!

If he wasn't Jack Watts, he'll be just a kid developing his game and wouldn't get posts about being a failure.

SW Obvious not one who's a good judge of talent.

It's pretty hard for the Kid to play well, when the whole side has an Off'y. No, I think he'll be OK yet for some more games. He started to show some tricks before the break, little things here & there. I want to keep playing him Atmo, to get more & more games experience into him. But maybe he can come out of the Freo or Sydney game. Jurrah will probably be right by then.

Keep Watts & Jurrah in the side, they both need to be there. Jurrah could take the pressure off Watts.

It'll also be handy to have Watts play games & get into the Casey finals team. They'll have to balance that to get it right.

A good finals series @ casey will do a lot of our kids good playing together. The likes of Blease & Watts, Tapscott & Strauss, with the Spencer & Jetta.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
