Well, I'm a big fan of Hughes and wanted him to get a game all year. Thought he deserved to be elevated ahead of McKenzie IMHO.

I have a quick question though. Being rookie drafted for a second time at the end of last season (was on RL in 06, 07, delisted 08, then re-drafted 09) would he have been offered the 2-year contract all new rookies get, or is it possible he only got 1 year because it was his second stint on our RL?

Because of his year off the list, does he effectively become a new rookie draftee again? Here's hoping he got two, because i'd really like to see him get a game next year.

The way it works is if you're a rookie you get a 1 year contract. The club has the option at the end of that year to extend that to a 2nd year, however you can also be delisted... The only time you're guaranteed a 2 year contract as a rookie is if you've moved from interstate. Like Jake Spencer, he would've been guaranteed two years because he moved to Melbourne from Queensland...

So essentially, it's up to the club if they want to keep him on another year. Given this supposed weak draft, I really hope we hold onto him and keep him on for next season...

I must confess that I hope that none of our rookies get a game next year because that would mean a few things

1. We were still having problems with injuries - surely this will not happen again next year

2. The players on the senior list have not developed as hoped

3. We are not winning enough games to be competitive.

This last 3 years has surreptitiously changed our ideas of how a season runs I.E. a good season is a settled season - look at any of the top teams, they tend to get through the year with minimal lineup changes. That is what I want from our team. The idea that we get through the year having called upon maybe 28 - 30 players maximum means that we have played well, stayed injury free and created genuine pressure on the list for selection. Go Dees!!!!

Not necessaraly Glen, look at Davey, he was a rookie and the reason he was promoted is becaus ehe turned to be 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times better than they thought and could easily cope with AFL football.

Hmm, yes, I thought of him as I typed but to be fair, he burst on the scene at the start of the season and never looked back. I guess that I am thinking of the situation that we have been in lately where we have effectively been gifting games to players because there was simply no one else to pick. Give me as many Flashes as you can; I like em, I like em!!

Listen up close children.

This is "inside" info, woohoo go me.

The word I got on Hughes is that as he was mature aged, the AFL gave us permission to re-rookie him at the end of the first year ONLY if he hadn't played a game.

If we played him, we would have had to promote him or let him go. Not giving him a cheap game at the end of the year let us keep him for an extra year for free.

(and yes, I'm aware it's not really "inside" info ;))

A mate of mine spoke to Danny and he (Danny)said the club was keen on keeping him and that he is part of the plan.... ;)

Not sure if these are accurate or not but:

Stats off the VFL website... he played 12 senior games at Casey this year. Kicking 20 goals 5 behinds (the 5 behinds coming when he kicked 1 goal 5 vs Box Hill in May).

No big bags at all, mpst he kicked was 3 goals.

Have I missed something on this thread? What planet are you guys on? Surely it's not the Daniel Hughes planet.

On this thread?

Yeah, the kid with the iPhone put a few thousand 38's on here because, apparently, that number is now metaphysically tied to an attractive bloke but average footballer - Daniel Hughes.

My quote about it being machine code was also removed, it was real funny, honest.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
