Wow. Impressive actions post the incident.

When I saw the title I thought, here we go, Daniel Ward version 2.

40+ players on the list, some are going to make mistakes. It's how they handle the aftermath, and also how many times they repeat mistakes.

Meh.

Made a mistake and did the right thing by owning up to it and apologising.

He's clearly a good kid and has a very bright future ahead of him.

Maybe I am missing something but if he placed a bet for someone else and was to be repaid for the bet then all he has done is allow his account to be used. He would not have been betting, he was the agent of another.

Given that and volunteering the information, the fine was pretty severe in my opinion.

Not calling Maric a liar, but anyone could use this excuse. I'm sure the AFL code of conduct which he breached stipulates it is a breach just to have your betting account used to bet on AFL games.

I know he's a bit wet behind the ears...but jeez, how many times would they have it drummed into them that 'under no circumstances' can they bet on AFL football??

Seriously, how hard is it??

He would've had to have known that betting on AFL, in an account under his name would come back to bite him in the ass..

It's a pretty minor thing tbh, but bloody hell, how hard is it?? Dumkopf!!

So why would he use his own account if he knew it was wrong?

Would be easy to ask someone to do it for him.

Clearly he didn't know, he made a mistake, he owned up (could've easily let it go unnoticed), good on him.

But you're right, anyone can use that excuse, that won't get them off either.

Why on earth would a 19/20 year old have a betting account !! For Chrissakes get a life.

May as well just light up $100 notes and burn them up.

Gambling is a mugs game - if Addam wants to make money go & buy sghares in Crown Casino or Tattersals

I agree that it's a storm in a teacup already, but how many here would be crying foul if it was a Carlton player?

I agree that it's a storm in a teacup already.....

It is.

However Maric was dumb to place a bet for a mate on AFL (That's naive). I dont like the concept of 19/20 years olds with gambling accounts. And I dont like the concept of sportman wagering any money on outcomes of games they are either involved in or are associated with.

Hopefully Maric learns a lesson. Move on time.

'fess up that you did the wrong thing ( pretty minor at that ) and only as a convenience for a mate, and you get copped for $5000!!

Take drugs TWICE and you can still remain an AFL player !!- get real AFL , the fine of $5000 is totally out of proportion for a self-confessed - with no personal gain -'çrime'

I note the Players association also see it as heavy handed. Every other footballer found guilty had part of their penalty suspended and it usually involved greater amounts of betting.

I also note that this is the same amount players are fined if they drink and drive and assault people. I would have thought these matters are far more serious than a small bet and especially when the player volunteered the offence as well.

You sound like a bitter 80 year war veteran.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
