Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Don't follow the example of your senior team-mates?

Seriously, what was the lesson? I thought he was fantastic. His composure, hardness, skills and courage were impressive.

Joeboy seems to hate Grimesy! :o:blink:

He was terrific again today. Seriously what more can you expect from a 5th gamer, than to beat his opponent, give us good drive out of the backline and put his body on the line? Terrific.

Thought McLean and Jones were a bit sloppy with their disposal in the wet, but both fought hard and won a fair bit of the ball in close.

Jamar and Sylvia the two really big standouts though.

I have no qualms with his attitude , ability , skills or looks ; my concern was that all of his opponents throughout the day kicked many goals on him .

Thus he was taught a lesson !

I am a big fan of Grimes but he was on Didak for large parts of todays game and was taught a lesson. Joeboy has it on the money.

Hard to judge who plays on who half the time. I only saw him on Didak once or twice, but you might be right.

Still, I think that as a future midfielder, he is doing a terrific job playing on dangerous small forwards. He wasn't disgraced and fought admirably. His decision making and disposal is top notch, and his courage is exemplary.

Definitely would put him in the top half a dozen best players for us today (there weren't many!).

Joe boy I have to seriously ask, has McLean ever played a good game in your book?

I think he was ok today in a awful side, I would not have said poor getting worse.

I really think you do not like him and will never say he played anything but poor.

Joeboy is right. Grimes was beaten by Didak today but his skill level and composure stand out like a beacon. He will be a very good player.

From memory I think he has only played 1 very good game this year , and in a team that is crying out for senior leaders this is inexcusable from one who is regarded as our incumbent captain .

I don't dislike him , I just think he's having a very poor season.

McLean – get fit and get back to basics

Moloney – Your best is valuable

I thought Grimes possession count was a concern. It's usually a strength. He's obviously a keen rebounder, but he didn't get much of it. No reason to drop him or anything, but I think Joeboy has it right here.

ur kidding urself mate...

give it up

Give what up?

I'm not saying McLean played well but he was better than about 15 others out there, i would not have said he was poor, the problem is with players like McLean is he is in a similar position to Kerr, surronded by average players and copping the best tag = not as a good a game, once we get some better players he will also be a better player, and as most people do forget he had no pre season, is still quite young and so many people expect him to be a Judd like player, he is never going to be but he gives more to this club than virtually any other player.

Im pretty sure he got 18 touches. 2-3 below his average. Not that bad really.

Every week he has been just ok and slow. I'm sorry but I don't want him to be just ok. What has happened to the hard nosed aggresive animal that we saw a couple of years back?

Most of Joeboys assessments are OK.

But much too tough on Grimes ( who did OK given the number of times loose players came bursting out of the middle toward him) and a bit generous on Frawley ( who has played better games than he did today).

The main point about McLean is that he has been over-rated. He is too slow to be a top-line midfielder and makes too many mistakes to be captaincy material. Generally he is a good solid midfield option who gets a fair bit of the ball. He's definitely worth his place - but noting more

That assessment of McLean Is just about spot on.

Bate - gave us something

Bell - not AFL standard

Bruce - still can't kick

Cheney - must keep playing

Davey - not his best

Frawley - not our worst

Green - wasn't at best

Grimes - good but loose

Jamar - great ruck effort

Johnson - absolutely abysmal handballing

Jones - stop kicking sideways

Maric - really, really disappointing

McDonald - probably carried injury

McLean - going nowhere fast

Moloney - wasn't his best

Morton - was hardly sighted

Rivers - just did OK

Robertson - an improvement defensively

Sylvia - another great performance

Warnock - good yet again

Watts - unfortunately did nothing

Whelan - far too loose

Same here. He definitely was on Didak for portions of the game and seemed far too loose to me, but it's a good learning experience for him. He has showed a lot in not many games. Certainly not our worst, and up there as being one of our better players, despite some mistakes.

People are being harsh on Maric.

He spent the majority of the game in an empty forwardline. The ball never got down there, and when it did, it was delivered much too high for someone his size, and the Pie always had too many numbers down back to allow him the crumb.

Yes he missed a couple he should have nailed, but I love that he is so smart with his ball use, and really the way we were outplayed today it is very hard to judge someone who is essentially playing in the most difficult position on the ground (in terms of being able to rack up the possessions and get involved).

I would have liked to see him play a bit more through the middle where he can get involved, get his hands on the ball and use his football brain and good skills (like he did against the Saints in the first half).

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
