.......

Mclean will be a good to great player but IMO he is a Robin to someone's Batman.

I'd say no way to trade personally.

jacey..i agree with your quote, but I always hated Robin.

more like Brock is the Sundance Kid to someone's Butch Cassidy.....for those movie buff followers.

Before you all castrate me, we need to think logically here.

For me, Brock is too slow and is too often getting caught and slowing us down in the midfield. I know injuries are not helping but he is still too slow. A premiership midfield can not carry too many of these players and we already have Jones and Moloney that play a similar role. Im not saying he is not good but he would be a valuable asset on the trading block, especially with Gold Coast coming in looking for some hard bodied midfielders to support their young list. A trade to GC could yield us a very high pick, id imagine getting a top 10 at the least for him. Which we could use to get some more class into the midfield.

Its just a though but hard decisions need to be made to get the right midfield mix and Jones Moloney and Brock are too similar. We need more class. Finishers.

Thoughts?

Stupid thread!! Brocky would fit into the cats or Hawks midfield in a heartbeat. All that needs rectifying is his decision-making, which isn't that major. He busts his arse for the club and even put in $10,000 of his own money for FFS-just to help ensure he has a club to play with in the future. We need good hard nuts busting their sh*t for the Dees and we'll need his leadership, with beamer, in the midfield to help the newbies as they come thru.

The Daveys Greens Slyvias Mortons Grimes Buckleys Bleases Scullys? will do outside, finishing work. When J-mac retires, we'll need Jones Moloney McLean under every pack so.. Crappy Thread.. Hope Brocky doesn't visit this site...

"Trade McLean for what" is the question.

If the trade was to, say, another club for pick #13, I'd say no. He's worth more to us than just a pick in terms of leadership and endeavour. However, if the trade was, say, to another club for #13 which we could then on-trade with #3 to Fremantle for Pavlich, I might consider it more closely.

Argh this is so frustrating. Are people seriously this stupid that they can not understand the concept of this topic? It really is painting the intelligence level of this group to be quite low.

For the FINAL TIME i will repeat.

THis thread IS NOT about Brock being too slow to be valuable or not up to it or someone who is not a valuable player. Quite the contrary, i proposed that he is a valuable player and as such would command a high value on the market place and is something that should be considered for the reasons i have stated. I think he is a better player than Jones and Moloney, as stated twice already, however he is our best chance to get another classy midfielder into the mix which we lack.

Anyway i figured that this forum was somewhere where you can discuss important real life practical issues relating to the club. Obviously i was wrong because about 60% of the responses have been nothing short of idiotic writing off the notion without even understanding it or giving it any thought.

Its embarrassing that so many people on here are supposedly "the true supporters of our club". I guess it does explain why we have the reputation of posh unknowledgeable supporters

Glad you're here to point out how stupid we are. "This is NOT a thread about Brock being too slow to be valuable.." Read the 2nd line of the topic YOU started and reconsider who the stupid one is. Sounds pretty devaluing IMO.

-Its embarrassing that u think you're a true supporter. You'd sound like you'd be more at home at 'ology..

Maybe the rest of the squad should pay 10,000 to get a game so they don't get any scrutiny or discussion about them? as for leadership, Green would be a mile in front of him.

And as for making the cats or hawks midfield your joking (who would he replace) the trouble with Brock, Moloney and Jones they are all one paced, crash and bang type of players we have no silk or top line thinkers in there but I guess that will change over time.

I'd hate to think what any melbourne player would think if they saw this site.

They'd think it was just a bunch of loungeroom legends living out their fantasies and wouldn't take any of it seriously.

But I bet they've been warned off ever reading any fan sites.

McLean isn't the type of player I'd be looking at trading. Sure, this year he hasn't lived up to the expecations, ours and his, however even in his poor games he is still contributing, and he's showing he's still good at clearances. In the incoming years when Scully ( ;) ), Blease and the other young mids we have mature, guys like McLean & Jones will be invaluable for our depth and midfield rotations.

I don't see the value in trading away an inside midfielder when we have so few of them in the first place

Yes he is a great clubman, with a great work ethic. Yes, he is good in the clinches and wins the contested ball but...

1. Far too often he butchers his kicks (and often his handballs as well). Good, consistent disposal is becoming more and more the most valuable skill in football, and too often Brock totally duffs his chances. People moan and whine about forwards (Newton) missing gimme shots at goal and then the same people turn a blind eye when midfielders miss targets by 10 metres. In the last two weeks in particular, Brock has cost us shots at goal because of poor disposal. It is not something that has always been evident in his game (or perhaps his work ethic covered it up?) but it seems to be happening far to often at the moment. Supporters from other clubs are noticing it as much as I am.

2. His leg speed is becoming a real worry. He really labours and almost looks in pain when chasing down the loose ball. I really hope it is an injury and he can rectify it, but it is a real concern.

If both of these things can be sorted out, and return to the level they were 2-3 years ago then he will be a vital piece in what will be a good time for the MFC. If however he continues to struggle with his disposal and can't improve his leg sped, then he may miss the boat.

Trade him? No. His value won't be there if he doesn't regain his mojo. He will be too valuable to us to trade if he does.

Rest him to get his body right, if indeed it is an injury issue? Part of me says yes, because I hate seeing him struggle so much, but for now I think we need him out there for his experience. I wouldn't be surprised to see him finish the season early for surgery though.

ah- you're picking on one little point i made. The $10,000 shows loyality, shows we don't need to worry about him ending up at the G.C or something. Brocky is top 3 for best skills in our team-its his decision making which needs a tweak. The fact that brock usually pin-points every foot-pass highlights his weakness in decision making-because the pass comes off and it can end up going directly to an opponent.

-Who would i have him ahead of?

I'd have Brocky ahead of Bateman or McGlynn or Osbourne from the hawks midfield

I'd have him ahead of Ling or Corey or Enright or Wojinski from the cats midfield..

He's just below the Mitchells or selwoods from those teams, but look at the support they have.. (same could be said about Cam Bruce for the last couple years-although not as good a disposal as Brock- but what support has Cam had, YM if your reading this?)

-so theres 7 examples for ya- 7 top players IMO that most people would agree Brocky is better than.

OH YEAH.. BROCK MCLEAN - ONE HD - TONIGHT- ONE WEEK AT A TIME - SPECIAL GUEST.. Watch.. then tell me he doesn't sound like a future captain!! ;)

Yeah thats why i try to keep it positive, or stick up for the players..

if someones genuinely going shite and your opinion is that they're not good enough for the team, or whatever, you don't have to bag the crap out of them like some do.

The bit that gets me is that you get it from people that support the club.. and therefore that player. I don't think Brad Miller is up to standard, haven't for years, but he still busts his arse for the club and has my full respect and each time i see him, i just hope he's improved and trust that the club knows what its doing, by keeping him on the list.. eg: mabbe they see something we don't.

It might dis-hearten me a bit, possibly, but as someone else mentioned, they're prob warned off going near a site like this.. but still..

Your judging a post - injury Brock McLean. just look at the 2006 season and finals series to see- even at just 19 or 20- how impeccibly skilled brock is by foot when FIT.

Touch wood, those days, for brocky will come around again by the start of 2010. They're not that far away now really.. just needs a touch more fitness and matchplay and his speed and kicking will improve to where they were. IMHO

Personally i think Brock is injured & would look to rest him after the QB Game. List Management for next year.

Brock should not be traded, what would we be offered in return? Somebody far worse or a young recruit that is starting from scratch.

REMEMBER SEEING EARL SPALDING WIN A FLAG WITH CARLTON IN '95. WE GOT BUGGER ALL IN THAT DEAL-MADE ME SICK!!

Oh yes don't forget last years game against the Lions. Brock starred with a Busted Foot.......GUTS.

That's a huge call. Can't go with you on that one, but very interesting nonetheless.

I'd hate to think what any melbourne player would think if they saw this site.

They read them, and I reckon if Brock read this he'd only be heartened. The original post is actually veiled support in a sense, as he's just proving that Brock IS valuable... sort of a rhetorical question for us all. Besides, the abundance of chest-beaters here far outweigh the thinkers, so you'll find everyone here supports Brock, in their own way.

They'd think it was just a bunch of loungeroom legends living out their fantasies and wouldn't take any of it seriously.

Warned off, probably... But they do read them, so we are told. I worry mostly about guys like Cam Bruce, and maybe someone like Jamar. Criticism can be a powerful aide in a persons development, in any walk of life. But there are times, particularly with these two, where it gets out of hand. I think even in Jamar's case the unending tide of spew aimed at him probably has some sort of effect. Perhaps even the lack of support in general. You can only be the butt of peoples' jokes for so long.

And for the record, I play my part in the criticism of Jamar. I'm not a fan, but I like to think I don't get personal, or carried away... or just plain abusive as some posters are.

And people loved Bambi too but sooner or later they all pass on, I will or could accept that he is carrying an injury and if that is the case then he will become a liability as the season rolls on time to fix the problem put someone else there to try them out and get Brock fixed up. If he is not injured then there will be a problem as the season rolls on.

The only criticism that would hurt a player, is one that is personal.

If we highlight that player A is struggling to make an impact, or has poor disposal, chances are player A has been told that a million times by the coach. However, if you comment that player B is a useless hack, heartless, selfish, etc..., than that is simply insulting and would hurt players.

Constructive criticism is something I would guess most players thrive on, and none would think they are perfect (you would hope). But to be insulted by nameless individuals on a website would be pretty devastating, particularly for young players. I know we can all play a role in that, but in general Demonland doesn't allow for that sort of thing to take place.

I've always maintained that it is not what you say, but how you say it.

Sorry to derail this topic, just thought I'd pick you up on that because I'm sure we've discussed this in the past.

This thread never doubted whether Brock would make it in a top teams midfield like hawks or cats so get your facts straight. In fact i think brock would make it in any team in the afl. However this thread was opened to discuss the possibility of what a trade could bring for the club and evaluate the positives against the negatives.

If you think exploring such options and discussing them is stupid then you are the stupid one. If you dont think it is in our best interests to trade him then thats fine lets discuss it. But dont be an idiot and just call the whole thread crap because your throwing a hissy fit about a player you like being mentioned as 'potential' trade bate.....

Read what you have copped, "This is NOT a thread about Brock being too slow to be valuable.." too slow TO BE VALUABLE. I said he is slow which is a negative but he is still a very valuable player because of his strengths in other areas. So in essence he is not too slow to be valuable it, it just takes away from his value some what. The point was can we use him to get someone more valuable to that helps out in areas we are lacking in much more than the areas brock excels in.

And thank you for confirming the stupidity of many posters on this site...
