Since it's the Indigenous round in the AFL, and being an indigenous person myself, I thought I would post my alltime indigenous team.

(I say alltime, what I really mean is 'lifetime', since I've only named players I've actually seen play.)

So here goes.....

Backs: Gavin Wanganeen, Chris Johnson, Matthew Whelan.

Halfbacks: Michael McLean, Darryl White, David Wirrpanda.

Centres: Peter Matera, Maurice Rioli, Byron Pickett.

Halfforwards: Nicky Winmar, Lance Franklin, Chris Lewis.

Forwards: Leon Davis, Michael O'Loughlin, Jeff Farmer.

Followers: Adam Goodes, Andrew McLeod, Aaron Davey.

Inter: Michael Long, Peter Burgoyne, Shaun Burgoyne, Daniel Motlop.

Emerg: Jim Krakouer, Phillip Matera, Phil Krakouer.

So there you go.

WOW. 2 years ago who would've thought you'd even consider Davey to play onball when selecting a team like this, but today I can't say I disagree.

Gradually changing from The Flash to The Surgeon.

Gee that team looks fantastic. I'd still have to give Long the evil eye over that GF hit, so Matera in ;). Need to think a bit to get a team together.

While on the topic of Indigenous players, did anyone else see the footage of Daniel Motlop on AFL Teams tonight on Fox Sports?

It was so amazing, I'm still not convinced the footage wasn't meddled with. The guy is a freak talent.

Like any 'best ever' team, there's plenty in there that is debateable, but that's a much, much better effort than the one put in by Adam Goodes in one of the main rags this week.

Yes i would be giving Long a very Hard time. Never rated him after the GF. I waited till he got his medal, Gave him both Barrels & then Left. (an old bloke near me called him a "Coward" always remembered that.

Yeah was a very ordinary effort by Michael. Simmo was defenseless. I gave Long heaps that day. Was a weak act.

Didn't consider it when putting the team together though.

Its a great celebration.

I would like to nominate Nicky Winmar for the AFL Hall of Fame for doing one of the most famous, brave and inspiring acts I have ever seen on a football field when he lifted his St K jumper and showed them the pride in the colour of his skin to racist taunts of the Collingwood crowd at Victoria Park. For those too young, Victoria Park, particularly the Collingwood members flank was one of the most abusive and nasty sections of football spectators in Australia. There treatment of opposition players particularly coloured was well known.

It was a small step to start the total re education of the VFL/AFL and the public about the manner in which indigenous people are regarded treated and respected in life.

A wonderful act that was so important in igniting change in the affairs of indigenous people. May they continue to prosper and flourish and bring their special skills to the game.

Mal Michael in for a presence at full back? Chris Johnson was more of a pocket...

Bump CJ to the bench instead of Motlop and then you're right on...

Mal Michael's from Papua New Guinea. No indigenous Australian there... ;)

I saw Motlop's skills on fox last night - the man is an absolute freak - can only hope I get to see again

Assume may be on Youtube????

Great team Einstein - having seen the Krakouers play, they would be in my team ahead of Chris Lewis and Shaun Burgoyne. Each to their own.

Now where can I slot Les Bamblett - one of fattest blokes to ever play the game - man when he went to Footscray, those red and white stripes look immense

I'd definitely have the Krakouers ahead of Davey as well.

At the time Winmar had said that he was representing his guts to get up and get a win, as told to me by someone at the time who knew Joffa Cunningham. Then the story grew legs(not intestinal fortitude) as a show of black skin and Nicky much preferred this version. I believe this version of events. Great player all the same.

Thats the way I heard it too.

But dont let the facts get in the way of a good story!

Thanks Franky and Oley.

It clearly did grow legs!! :o

I think it was that incident and some of Everett's early racial taunts that rely sparked awareness and action.

I think it was that incident and some of Everett's early racial taunts that rely sparked awareness and action.

How it happened or not, I suppose is not the issue. Racial taunts had to stop, and this was a moment in time that could be moulded into anti racial taunt in the AFL.

However, I have umpired junior football since the early 80's and over 400 game, an I never heard a racial comment ever, only at me!

The other shoe drops when the story is told about when Nicky did a week or two for spitting on Greg Williams.

It wasnt the reason given in the press but by this time Nicky was wearing proudly his skin pointing and had had a pretty good run in the brownlow.

It was well before Gavin Wangeneens win and would have made Nicky the first indigenous winner.

Greg Williams had always denied (rightly, Im told) that he had any aboriginal heritage, but rumours abounded and the story was that Nicky believed Greg should be black and proud. Hence the spitting charge. There are some interesting stories about Nicky Winmar...

Like I said in my post I only considered players I saw play, so Polly, Cable and Jackson missed out. But no doubt would be in an indigenous team of the century type selection.

Derek Kickett and Gilbert McAdam were close to making the team but I only had so many spots. Always going to be some unlucky.

But hey, it's only an opinion. Happy to get others views.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
