Yep, its true. Meesen is out for the rest of the season... possibly the end of his career.

He has to have an ankle reco... the stress fracture is now 3/4 of the way through the bone.

Very sad... just when he was showing form yet another injury puts him back down

A Treatment Guide For Lower Extremity Stress Fractures

While treatment for lower extremity stress fractures, in and around the ankle, varies, here is our treatment protocol for specific lower extremity stress fractures.6

• Medial malleolar. Use a nonweightbearing (NWB), below-knee (BK) cast or boot for three to four weeks, and then proceed to weightbearing (WB) with a BK boot for four weeks. Patient should be able to return to activity (RTA) within 26 to 36 weeks. Orava, et. al., have found healing can take five months with these injuries.7 Shelbourne et. al., recommend open reduction, internal fixation (ORIF) and a NWB BK cast for four weeks, proceeding to a BK boot for two to four weeks, and an estimated RTA in six to 12 weeks.8

• Lateral malleolar. Have the patient maintain WB in an air cast for four to six weeks. The estimated RTA may range from eight to 12 weeks. Be aware that there may be a prolonged healing period, particularly among post-menopausal women.

• Tibial epiphyseal plate. Emphasize NWB in a boot for two to four weeks and then proceed to WB in a boot for two to four weeks. The RTA ranges from four to eight weeks.

• Navicular. For type I fractures (dorsal cortical break only), emphasize NWB in a BK cast or boot for six to eight weeks and then proceed to a WB boot for four weeks. The patient’s RTA may range between four to six months.

Types II and III are fractures that propagate into or completely through the navicular cortex. For optimal treatment, use ORIF with a bone graft across the fracture site. Follow up with six weeks of NWB in a BK cast and then proceed to the WB boot for two to four weeks. The RTA for these patients ranges between three and four months.9

In our experience, most patients who have had conservative treatment of types II and III navicular injuries either never completely heal, give up on their sport, and/or develop significant talonavicular and sometimes cuneo-navicular arthrosis.

• Medial tibial. Have these patients wear an Aircast (pneumatic) brace for four weeks. The patient’s RTA may occur between four and 12 weeks. This is supported by the work of Swenson, et. al.10 You may use a “standard” version of the brace for lower lesions or a “long leg” version for more proximal lesions.

• Anterior tibial. Use the Aircast long leg brace with anterior panel for four to six weeks of NWB. Then proceed to six weeks of WB. The patient’s RTA may range between 12 and 26 weeks. Clanton, et. al., also recommend electric bone stimulation and even IM Nailing for recalcitrant injuries.11

All stress fracture time protocols here are general references. The succession of each stage of treatment is based on pain. Remember, X-rays and other imaging techniques may lag behind the actual healing so assessing clinical signs and symptoms is paramount. We also address the patient’s lower extremity biomechanics with orthoses and shoe accommodations when necessary.

This isnt his first season ending injury, he has had a knee reco and this bad news has but yet another dampner on himself and his ability to play at the top level.

The only reason i joined today was because i was looking for some media coverage on the issue and came accross this forum.... i noticed someone heard a 'whisper' and i wanted to let them know it was true... no harm at all *shrugs*

We've had experiences in the past with posters making up injury stories about players, so we have trust issues

Since he is contracted till the end of 2010, why would he assume this was the end of his career? If he's right to go for pre-season, then he'll have the opportunity to play senior footy next season and fight for a contract renewal.

Or has he been told that if he doesn't perform this year he'll be delisted regardless of his contract situation?

P.S.- I hope the club has learnt its lesson. Do not given unknowns 3 year deals!!!

I feel a bit sorry for Meesen as things were only just starting to go right in a completely underwhelming career to date. While he wasn't at AFL grade yet IMO, he had taken some huge strides in putting egg on a LOT of people's faces. Including mine.

Tough break, but that's footy I guess. I'm looking forward to Spencer getting another run now.

Disappointing for Aussie, but I don't think his injury that big a deal really. Puts us one step closer to Scully and Butcher as far as I'm concerned, and his career is hardly in the balance.

Let this take nothing away from the best 2nd ruckman in the AFL, who might well be the worst 1st ruckman

Your right, remember some other very tall ruckmen 2 - 4 years back, who were very clumsy. McIntosh, Sandilands, etc. He should have time so he can learn & practice the subtlties.

I'm with Nasher in that i'm not sure that he was completely AFL-level just yet, but he was moving in the right direction and this injury could not have come at a worse time for him.

I was really looking forward to seeing him back out on the G, buzzing around with his enthusiasm and spark. He'll be right, like Nasher said, his career is hardly in the balance, but it is disappointing. #33, which he has only worn once for us in the NAB cup hasn't been too lucky for him...

But, on the plus side it'll mean there's less decision making. Maric will get more chances, and PJ/Spencer will still be playing. It's not the end of the world in the ruck stocks.

Wonna had done enough last year that he could afford an indifferent (or absent) first half of 2009. The Meesen one is worse, and more in the career threatening type. From all reports DB has been impressed with his work on the track, so that and his development should hold him in good stead.

I look forward to seeing Green and Wonna back now. In 6 weeks time I think we'll be crying out for both.

Tell him last year I didn't think much of him because it appeared he wasn't really putting in. However I'd like to say that his efforts this year have really proved me wrong & also have respect & admiration for his efforts this season & I wish him well personally & for the club.
