It's a pretty simple equation.

Start winning games, with an exciting brand of footy.

Get footy fans interested in our footy club and where it is going, and we won't get shafted.

That will be left to one of the other low profile Melbourne teams like, the Roos or Bulldogs.

It is how the system and structure of the AFL works, and why go cap in hand to the AFL and get compensated.

What is wrong with Demetriou? We as a club must turn things around before we obtain a decent fixture. That means wins, it means bigger crowd attendances, it means profits, it means better facilities and better management of the football department. Ultimately a better chance of success.

Smug & with no feel for the history of the game. All about expansion & the big end of town. Shows the MFC & our heritage no respect.

These comments may be partly true, but the AFL has turned itself into the biggest sporting brand in Australia on the back of it, while other sports struggle for sponsorship, free to air TV and identity. If the AFL had not have taken this path, another sport may have, and the MFC could have become the Sydney Kings. Would you have preferred that?

Sport is big business all around the world, we are just catching up.

We are basically on our own-hard as that will be for a while, ultimately i think its best that way.

The MFC must generate & find its own respect.

Demetriou will be judged on how the 2 "new" teams shape up. If they don't the whole competition will pay & he will be remembered as a fool.

I still don't understand the philosophy of Western Sydney-is Rugby League Dying?? There are 3 teams out there. How will an AFL side fill a stadium & why should they be primed up with Talent so as to win the "Grail" It stinks & that is the bottom line.

I thought he looked at his smug best when commenting on the "chicken wing tackle" controversy in the news this evening.

He said somehting like "we can't exactly tell people how to tackle, it's a bit difficult."

Regardless of your views on "chicken wing tackles" this is a pretty stupid comment to make. He was definitely giving Peter Costello a run for his money in the smirk stakes also.

The whole Western Syd saga is to increase the value of AFL TV rights. The filling of stadiums is a secondary nice to have after increasing AFL footage for TV and hopefully increasing AFL TV patronage in NSW and Qld. The two biggest markets the AFL has yet to really crack.

The legacy and question of the success of the teams 17 and 18 will only be determined well after Vlad is gone.

He has got to go, these guys are getting it all wrong. The Economic recession is going to be here for 5-10 years & this clown wants to expand into enemy territory that has no money.

It worries me If you look up the word Psychopath" Demetriou seems to almost fit the decision.

"we can't exactly tell people how to tackle, it's a bit difficult." This merely tells me that rules are only adhered to when it suits the authorities. A very worrying trend.

That is a disgraceful answer by the Number one man.

Demetriou is a useless [censored].

I completely accept the fact that it is up to us to shape the future of our club.

I'm less accepting of the assertion that 'if we perform, we'll get a better fixure/TV exposure' - it hasn't been shown to be consistent (just ask Dogs and Saints this year, compared to, say, Essendon) and even if it were consistent, it's a TERRIBLE business model and an even worse cultural influence, where it's okay to not follow you club during poor seasons.

But that's all details.

Doesn't change the fact Demetrio is a useless [censored].

$1m a year. FFS.

I agree with you but it is the way it is done-only essendon get a good deal at Docklands, as they got in first. The rest are hung out to dry. Yes they may be kept alive but always toothless & subservient to the AFL.

Its "The Big 4" & the rest. Our union with the MCC gives us a fighting chance to re assert our former glory, but we better get it right pretty soon.

I have heard Strong Rumours that all the $$ North Melbourne raised last year are gone-totally.

The Kangas are in serious trouble, they may still go up north, but i doubt the AFL would hand out such a generous offer a 2nd time.

One thing somes up Demetriou to me and that was he was happy to shaft his old football team , North Melbourne!

He's more interested in kickbacks and free corporate lunches(Can he get any fatter?) He's certainly got that "Roman Emporer" vibe about him.

Not many people on the Gold Coast that interested in Aussie rules and I suspect none in West Sydney. The expansion reeks of trying to expand "The Empire" at all costs ,likely for personal gain.

What a complete bastard! He should be favouring them like a politician in a swinging electorate. The cheek of him!

Big difference between shafting and favouring! Doubt it would worry him if his old club went down the gurgler.

Loyalty IMO is a strong personal quality?

Its all called the same thing....bias.

In business, the loyalty that you want is called a conflict of interest.

BTW, North had a chance to take the money and head North. The North board chose to knock it back. They can stew in their own legacy. It was their decision.

I absolutely LOATH the AFL. They take the approach that a club should be awarded for on-field and off-field performance with a better draw.

The draw should be EVEN across the board. Each team has 11 home games, 11 away games, an even number of Sunday games, an even number of Friday games and an even number of Saturday arvo games, almost like how it was in the early-late 90s. In the US, the schedule is even so there is an even playing field. In the AFL, the poor pulling clubs get Sunday games, which are notourisly low drawing, a twighlight game, which are the same, against Interstate clubs, which is even worse. It's not one of those three factors for a game, but all three. A Sunday twilight match against an interstate club. How did we even think we would pull more than 15k is beyond me.

The AFL is a ritch man business, not a sport business. The game has prospered, but the downside of that is that the AFL is being overly influenced by the all might dollar. I don't care what he says or what the AFL does to help Melbourne, I will never, EVER believe that Andrew and the AFL want 10 teams in Melbourne. They are bullying us out of Melbourne imo. I don't think any other club has a twilight game on a Sunday against an interstate club.

I'm going against the grain here, I don't think Demetrio is that bad, in fact looking at the big picture he's doing a good job. Demetrio's job is to run the AFL, not individual teams, and unfortunately our past administrations have faield dismally with that charge. We are in our current position because of our own incompetence, not because of poor management from the AFL.

The draw can never be even because of the number of clubs involved and the fact that there are 9 teams out of the one city.

No where else in the world does this occur, the problems that we face are unique to the AFL

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
