Besides a small article from the HS with not much depth the club still hasn't announced the captain...

Whats the big secret are they waiting to announce a sponser at the same time?

Agreed. If the HS article, which to me was just a re-hash of one that appeared a couple of weeks before Christmas, when the team was in Mansfield, is on the money and the worst kept secret at the MFC, why would the club hold off on announcing it?

I can only think of 3 possible reasons.

1. Junior is not going to be made captain.

2. Co-captains will be announced

3. An additional and bigger announcement will be made at the same time the appointment of a captain is announced.

I may be wrong of course, but I hope point 3 is the one.

Connoley will be captain and walk out to toss the coin then head to the bench to do what ever he does.

I know CC is pretty good, but he's not on the playing list, is he?

I have to agree iv'a. I'm assuming the club wants to hold off the official announcement until we have a sponsor. Then a double announcement.

Captain, Sponsor, Casey Deal...

FFS just announce something! Anything!!

Agreed, pretty poor form ATM IMO

For a club striving to be noticed in the football world we are awfully shy

Its hard to have announcement when you have nothing to announce.

Don't want to be the 'boy who cried wolf', so that when we do have something to announce, no one sits up & takes notice... or no one turns up to the press conference.

You also have to remember its mid January. Nobody pays much attention the news or whats happening in January, & its all forgotten by the time March comes round.

With membership up on this time last year, I'd say we're ticking along OK at the moment. (obiously aside from Sponsorship which isn't a matter of design).

Whilst I'm a little concerned at the lack of announcements, I also understand that the club should make them at a time that best suits them and helps us, we should not announce anything simply for the sake of it.

Indeed, if the intake of Membership starts to slow before the start of the Season, Sponsorship and Captaincy could help revive it, similarly an announcement of a long-standing agreement with Casey (surely dependant on us first getting a Sponsor) will probably be made at a time that best suits the club and helps us to attract more members.

Guys, be patient, it's January 14th FFS.

Correct. No use making an announcement when there is nothing to announce at present.

P.S. Agree with Iva, that article did seem a re-hash from prior-christmas with Robbo's quotes.

Now that the 20/20's are out of the way, tomorrow looks as though its a window of opportunity for an announcement... ;)

KB is interviewing Norm Smiths son on SEN right now, and they also announced a press conference is scheduled for 2PM this afternoon.

James McDonald named Captain.

Cameron Bruce as vice captain.

While some may argue he was not the right choice, I don't think anyone can say he doesn't deserve it.

Congratulations junior.

Also no mention of a major sponsor.

Fair enough, I thought the Thread Title was slightly off the mark, but you've fixed that now too.

Cheers.

Well we will be noticed now ... For being absolute morons following Collingwood's Scott Burns captaincy. I am a fan of

Mc Donald and I love the way he trains hard and leads by example but for god sake this is stupidity he will not be around for much longer. He can lead the team on the field and at training as well as Bruce but why make it official. He seems to quiet and he will have to put up with a lot of media every week win or lose. I think we have played it too safe again which is annoying me. But good luck to Junior as I am a fan of his and I hope he proves me wrong.

Is longevity a set criteria for captaincy? I see nothing wrong with him being captain for only 1 year, or for 2 if he's able to play on (admittedly highly doubtful).

I just think that's a slight overreaction.

My sentiments exactly. They used the same player voting system as last season. As much as we admire Junior, the appointment makes no sense on so many levels.

For starters, I'd hope that Junior's playing time would diminish this year, and the younger mids would take on a greater role.

Secondly, once Junior relinquishes the captaincy, does Bruce takeover the helm? If so, Bruce will be close to 30. Why not groom a younger player like McLean, and give him the VC.

And finally, Junior is not a great media performer which is a prerequisite of an AFL captain these days.

The player voting system got it wrong last season, and they got it wrong this year.

That's fair but as a club looking to youth there is not much point having a captain for a short time. Sure he can lead the team on the field and at training as well as Bruce but why make it official. If we are going to move forward with youth we need someone who will be at the helm for an extended time. There is no reason he cant do what Brad Green and co do but make someone captain who will be there for an extended period of time.

Exactly what i mean Junior is not guaranteed to play 22 games and he normally starts on the bench anyway

this is a decision about culture.

ok so he might not be the inspirational captain in the traditional sense.

but i guarantee he sets a bloody good example in terms of work ethic, and playing for the team.

and that is WAY more important than someone who might inspire us to an extra win this year - because down the track, we want a team who work hard for eachother.

They didn't at all.

Should the players have voted Neitz out of the captaincy last year and exactly who should have been appointed as Captain?

The Club was on the record as saying the captaincy was Neitz's if he wanted it back in December/ January last year before any vote was taken. So clearly he was the Club's first choice.

And again this year after McDonald and Bruce filled in for Neitz after his retirement who were realistically the other contenders? And before you say McLean, Green or others, its clear that the players did not think so.

Wouldn't be just another hot air snipe at the current administration, Mo?

I still don't see why it is a problem to have a captain for 1 or 2 years until one of the younger guys is ready. Is it cos you like the romantic notion of having a captain in place for 8 years, the symbolism of having a fresh young captain to lead a young brigade of players to a new era of success? It'll be great for the journalists writing stories about the club... but in the practical sense & for the players I think it makes little difference.

He is experienced, he is respected by all at the club, he is a leader. He is not had the most media exposure of our players, in fact probably one of the least, but having seen him perform in this capacity before I think he seems more than capable.

To me it reeks of criticism for criticism's sake.

I'm open to being proved wrong, but i'm still not hearing any real reason why having an older captain, that is only in place for a year, is a bad thing.

In collingwood's case I think it gave them time until Maxwell was ready. I fail to see a downside with their decision. They still made the finals. Had they have not had Burns as captain they still wouldn't have gone any further.

Now prove me wrong.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
