The Zebras are preparing for life after Melbourne. Their chances of making the finals are slim and their destiny is not in their hands. Coach Andy Lovell told supporters in the club's email this week:

"The equation as it stands now is that we can and must win our remaining 2 games against Frankston (away) and North Ballarat (home) while relying on Frankston or the Bullants losing both of their remaining games in order for us to play finals footy."

Supporters should also note that this week's fixture and the following one v North Ballarat have been changed to Sunday matches.

No Meesen? After he finally played a good game, he's not there???

The Sandy Reserves will play off in the finals. It's just a matter of whether they occupy 3rd, 4th or 5th places when the home and away season ends on Sunday. The squad to play Frankston includes:

Calder, Anthony

Cannon, Jack

Cheney, Kyle

Cleeve, Stuart

Curcio, Michael

Fleming, Andrew

Gilder, Brad

Gileno, Adrian

Gravina, Stephen

Gribbin, Daniel

Hardiman, Maddison

Hine, Matthew

Johnston, Marc

Lockwood, Scott

Lyall, Nicholas

Martyn, Guy

Monaghan, Sam

Shakaib, Hiwad

Summons, Justin

Torcasio, Christopher

Tregear, Shane

Weetra, Isaac

Zomer, Trent

Unfortunatley, I have no information as to what's happened to John Meesen and Jake Spencer and I will endeavour to find out at the weekend..

Tom McNamara has a hamstring injury and might be right to play for Sandy reserves in the finals.

I read that as well and was about to ask if anyone could shed light on exactly what it meant.

Something like the strong focus on ensuring their non-Victorian youngsters – including Morton, Austin Wonaeamirri, Kyle Cheney, Tom McNamara and, until recently, Jake Spencer - are not thrown into the deep end when relocating from their native homes.

There are a few possibilities here with a wide range of implications. He could be injured and went back home in anticipation of resuming when the pre season starts or he could have become disenchanted with being in Melbourne and went home never to return (perhaps to sign on with GC17) or he could have just moved house. He looked very promising but I wonder if all of the talk about getting Robert Warnock or the fact that he was being shunted backwards and forwards between Sandy ones and twos might have put him off. Then again, it could be personal or family reasons or imply a misunderstanding in the way the whole thing was reported.

It would be nice if the club issued some sort of statement to clarify the position.

I would assume that this meant that Spencer moved out of his host family's house recently and into a place by himself or with some friends.

I just re read the article and what you said makes sense, he probably has moved out of the host family thing

Do you see any AFL future for Zomer?

He's in Sandy's 2s atm and although it may be a bit early to call he is fairly well developed for a 19 y/old and despite being relatively mobile and having a decent spring he seems to lack an adequate football brain to make it as a forward or backmen and is probably a touch too short to be a ruckman.

Good luck to him but I was surprised that he even got rookie listed in the first place after seeing him play over the last 4 years

Early on this season I thought he might kick on.....but he lacks pace....very good mark and kick but once the ball hits the ground that's it.....

Doubt if he'll be on the D's list next year

Agree.

From what I have seen the reports from watchers I trust he lacks the basic smarts and has poor second or third efforts at the ball.

Sandy won by 58 points. Maric had over 30 touches of the ball, Petterd kicked 3 and Grimes will be named in the best players.

All in all, the best possible outcome.

Yes, it was the Sandringham of old today at Frankston with Nick Sautner booting seven goals and the Zebras dominating after half time to blow the Dolphins off the park by 20.10.130 to 9.18.72. Maric, Petterd, Grimes and Frawley were all outstanding and it was Grimes' third quarter which set up the win. The pressure at VFL level is a lot less than at the elite AFL level but what stood out was that these players made good decisions, got plenty of the ball and disposed of it magnificently. Grimes' delivery was pin point and would have put just about every player who represented the MFC yesterday to shame.

The first quarter saw Frankston doing a lot of niggling and Nick Sauntner was reported for charging. This didn't stop him from regaining his lead on the goalkicker' list ahead of Podsiadly of Werribee.

Nathan Carroll was the hero playing in a makeshift ruck with the assistance of Ben Holland. John Meesen and Jake Spencer are out for the rest of the year.

Sandy needs to win next week against North Ballarat and wants Geelong to beat Frankston to fall into eighth place.

Sandringham 6.3.39 7.6.48 14.6.90 20.10.130

Sandy will make the finals if...

1. Geelong beat Frankston next week @ Geelong AND

2. Sandy beat North Ballarat at Sandy next Sunday....

The ball is in Frankston's court,,,,win and they play finals....

All the close losses this year have cost Sandy dearly....

Valenti was terrific today....if he was annoyed at being dropped it didn't show

Heard that Jake Spencer has Glandular fever...

That's right on all counts. The Snake was at the ground and he looked very pale. I spoke to Isaac Weetra at the three quarter time huddle and he said Spencer had had a bout of glandular fever.

Sandy plays North Ballarat in the seniors at TBO while the reserves have another go at Frankston in the elimination final (venue tba)

Here here, thanks Barry.

Although I did hear that Barry from Beach Road has an old mate from the RSL who is a Casey supporter and might take on the Casey newshound role for Demonland. Any truth to that rumour?

Sandy still have a slim chance of getting into the finals, IF, they win next week, & IF, the other teams & footy gods do the necessary for our advantage.

The best the boys CAN DO is play well.

Today was a beauty down @ Frankstown, a ripper of a win, & for Sandy 2 halve's of footy. The first half Sandy boys were a little panicked & rushed the ball too much turning it over time & again, the flip side was we had a fair amount of the footy so did have some score posted & together with some desperate efforts went in @ half time only a point the difference. good & bad footy from sandy's 1st half.

Carroll was playing a great game as ruckman & did many selfless acts running back with the flight of the ball taking strong grabs whilst crashing the oncoming pack or @ the least causing the spillage. Sandy boys were fumbling around & overusing the footy giving frankston time to get around the contest & pressure. Frankston fed off this Sandy trait for the whole first half which made Sandy look poor.

The second half saw the Zebras regain some composure @ took their time & used the ball better, the slower tempo suited Sandy's inexperienced team & frustrated the Dolphins as their ball supply dwindled with sandy's resurgence. the Zebra's kicked some 8 goals or so in the 3rd Qtr to not much, & virtually took a strangle hold on the game. Belief was growing in one another from seeing the youngsters & veterans were able to combine into a winning team & a better brand of footy flowed from they're. Frankston pressed hard in the last Qtr but the growing confidance in the Zebra team was enough to see the boys keep their heads & play out the win.

Many very good efforts throughout the game which really was a team effort.

Exciting times ahead for the Dees supporters with Grimes showing a lot of good stuff with his thinking & brilliant use of the footy by foot. Good contesting for the ball.

Cheney played a good game but a great second half & was nearly unpassable at times at half back.

Maric was busy getting inside & winning some footy, but what was exciting to boot was his breaking out of the pack with the ball taking the game on, & some nice kicks.

Valenti stepped it up in the 2nd half I thought going in hard & chasing down the opposition when they were looking dangerous. All heart again.

Petterd was dangerous the whole game & played around half forward taking some good marks & also fighting for the loose ball &/or tying it up when we looked vulnerable, a hugely valuable game.

Frawley continues to grow as a footballer keeping his cool & doing his job, showing acts of courage & desperation.

Many mistakes were made by us in the first half, particularly in defence from the kick - ins but once the boys took their time making their decisions the Sandy game flowed.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
