He is ready to explode, dont have to waste the two years it normally takes for key position players, and you have a ready made full forward for the next 10 years.

Would not do it in a month of Sundays.

I have concerns about Hawkins.

Care to elaborate your concerns on Hawkins Bob?

At the end of the day Hawkins hasnt been able to crack into the Geelong team..and of course its Geelong but someone like Franklin and even roughead would have made a starting 18 position in their line up. No thanks. I dont think we should take Watts anyway. Naitanui or Rich for more. Watts has no aggression

I would need something more than Hawkins, how about all of their father son selections for our pick one?

Seems only fair, we had to work hard for our pick 1 they got all their F/S picks for almost nothing.

It's 2008, not 1978 - that's a good thing!

agreed. most of those players with aggression put their body on the line too much (brown, dermie etc) and as good as they are, they ain't here long enough.

For HAWKINS???!!!!

Tom Hawkins is as over-rated as Jennifer Hawkins.

He's alright, and I'd certainly not complain about having him on my team, but for a number 1 pick?

Pass.

From all reports he's hardly been carving it up at VFL level either. The problem with Tomahawk is that he still appears to be too big - agility and endurance are more important than size if you are a forward in today's game. No disrespect to Tom Lonergan, but you would have thought that a guy with the wraps like Hawkins would have played more games.

Don't worry about that, Watts is all class. If you want aggression, Lewis Johnston from SA shows a fair bit, and he would hopefully be there abouts with our PP. He'd provide that X-Factor too in our forward line.

I wouldn't mind seeing a forward line that read:

Wona - Watts - Johnston

Maric - Miller - Davey

With Bate and Sylvia chipping in as well.

I meant more that the game is soft and anyone who's hard spends as much time suspended as playing :P

You have not got a clue of the difference between "hard" and "soft". Hard has nothing to do with suspensions or physical acts directed against other players. The defensive pressure in todays game with fitter, stronger players running hard than ever before suggests the game has never been harder and more contested. Its a testament to the physical nature of the game that hard at it players like Brown and Carey had or will have shortened careers through build up of wear and tear on their bodies. In fact some of the so called "hard" players of the past were some of the most gutless individuals you could find particularly those players that poleaxed unsighted opponents behind the play.

I dont think we should take Watts anyway. Naitanui or Rich for more. Watts has no aggression

That settles it then. After such a ringing endorsement lets get Watts.

Hey, Jenn Hawkins is not over-rated, OK!

David Rhys-Jones, Dennis Banks,..... to name a couple. One that I must mention even though he will go down as one of the greatest...Leigh Matthews.

That settles it then. After such a ringing endorsement lets get Watts.

 Watts it is.

Everyone keeps saying this and its a load of bollocks. Hawkins played the first 10 or so weeks - ahead of Lonergan, was dropped for a couple of weeks to find some touch - as most 19 year old kids are along the way, and has since been injured for the last couple of months. He has played twice as many games as your average 19 year old KPP prospect.

He signed on with the Cats mid year and Bomber came out as recently as a month ago and said they have big plans for him. He will not be going anywhere.

That aside I wouldnt trade the No 1 pick for him in a million years, far to one dimensional. I'd consider the PP though.

No aggression is NEVER a good thing, stupid comment!

However, im not saying Watts doesnt have any, too hard 2 tell!!

As for the Hawkins deal, what a joke, no chance, no thanks!

Lonergan is cats prefferd option right now, Hawkins not even really dominating at VFL..

I also have HUGE concerns with Tomahawk!

He seems to be very passive, cant really play anywhere other than the goal square, and has not really improved at all from year to year!

Watts is twice the prospect, I cant beleive anyone would even consider this, its ridiculous!

Where do people come up with this sh*t?

Hawkins is NOT an option, he is injured. Of course Lonergan is currently preferred over Hawkins, are you saying you'd play a player who cant walk over a fit player? He is INJURED. NOT PLAYING. UNAVAILABLE

Aside from that in his few VFL games this year he kicked bags of 7 & 6 and was named BOG - how is that not dominating?

NO!

He is currently inj, but has played 7 or 8 games this year!

HE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR PICK ! OF A NATIONAL DRAFT, END OF STORY!

Especially not a draft being compared to the 2001 superdraft!

I dont care what he has done in VFL anyway, what has he done ata AFL level? NOT MUCH!

He does not seem to of improved..

I cant beleive im even bothering to discuss this, its completely ludicrous!

Laughable!

I agree that Hawkins isnt worth a No 1 pick.

Everyone keeps saying 'Hawkins cant crack into Cats team', 'Hawkins cant even have an impact in the VFL', which is all just absolute rubbish... You cant just spout lies to make your point sound better. He HAS dominated at VFL level, his last game before they put him on ice he kicked 6 while carrying an injury! You are wrong.

Hawkins is a kid in a mans body who has played a season and a half of footy. If you want to write him off now go right ahead, Im not sure on what basis though, since when were 200cm 19 year olds required to hold a senior spot in a Premiership team to be of any future value?

I cant wait for the 'Watts is rubbish' posts next year when he doesnt have an immediate, ongoing impact:

'What sort of a hack 18yo beanpole cant hold down a spot in the AFL!'

'Only kicked 7 in the VFL, cant even dominate!'

Moronic.

Dominating at VFL level doesn't translate to being a competent player at AFL level. Just ask Mark Jamar or Paul Johnson. There is a significant gap between the two, even more so at Geelong. Hawkins has yet to play in the AFL like he has at the VFL.

And it is true that he can't crack into the Geelong team. He has been fit for most of this year, yet Lonergan and Gamble have taken his spot in the team.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
