My plan for end of 2008 onwards

Neitz retires end of this year opens salary cup up

yze takes a MAJOR paycut let him play his 300

secure #1 draft pick

draft ben cousins through pre season

Trade hard 4 Embley either through draft picks or players , i.e trade bruce or green 4 picks then give to WC plus our 2nd rounder.

IN: Cousins, #1 pick, Embley

OUT: Neitz, Holland, Bruce or Green

just my opinion

Not a chance in hell Yze plays on in 2009. He is finished.

But luckily for him, his legend will always live on through the famous Yze_Magic

I'd prefer Bruce rather than Embley.

Also would probably prefer Robbie Warnock rather than Ben Cousins. Very hard one to pick tho

With Neitz out and most likely Yze (McDonald mayb as well altho I hope not), we should have a fair bit of space in the Cap. This to go with McNamee signalling his intent to assist in recruiting a big name, we might get someone decent through trading. However I am not sure how we could manage this without giving up high draft picks which I doubt we would want to trade away.

Any way, long way to go and mayb some more wins to change the whole scenario

I'd rather Bruce or Green than Embley. Just think they are better players.

Wouldn't be against recruiting Cousins under the right circumstances as it's concievable that veterans such as Holland, Neitz, Yze, McDonald, White and Whelan could all go in one hit leaving a further dearth of experience and leadership in an on field sense.

Promote Wonaeamirri.

Whispers have it that we are trying to lure Robbie Warnock am keen on this idea depending on the price.

What I think is imperative for the rest of 08 going into 09 is getting as many games into; McLean, Bate, Morton, P.Johnson, Sylvia, Dunn, Petterd, Grimes, C.Johnson, Green, Maric, Garland, Moloney, Rivers, Wheatley, Davey, Warnock, Wonaeamirri, Carroll and Whelan as possible, as I believe all have the strength, smarts, speed and skills to form a very good unit in time. Finding players to fill Key Position Holes in that side is also a challenge. Hopefully players such as Meesen, Newton, Martin and Frawley are up to it.

i dunno about you guys but i just wanna rebuild and give us a chance of winning a flag in the future instead of having a false sense of where we are as a club and pick up has-beens(cousins) or age-ing good players(embley).

Trade for 3-4 top 15picks... ala. Hawthorn did in 2004 & 2005. Seriously rebuild, no more [censored]-footing around. A 'rebuild' is not trading for 1 extra top-15 pick, it is completely starting over with the future in mind.

Chances are we are going to be losing a fair amount of our core players of the past 10yrs (Neitz, Yze, White, McDonald) in the next 2-seasons, so we have to plan ahead long term... not look for little over-26ers to temporarily plaster over the cracks that they will all leave with their departures.

I mentioned it in one of the threads I started up... we have a good core group of 20-25yr olds who will peaking around 2010-2011... lets build around them.

It's not as easy to do that any more. Clubs are not as willing to give up 1st round draft picks. For instance Hawthorn managed to get two first rounders for John Hay, whlst we got one first rounder for TJ. It isn't that simple

Sorry Giro........don't know if you've watched Embley lately, but he is only just going at the minute!

Very injury prone, and no way known we would let Bruce or Green go to get him.....that's nuts!

At this rate our B+F is looking like:

1. Brad Green

2. Cameron Bruce

Wouldn't trade both of them for Embley - a player past his prime

Yeah, good point... but we have to try something though. For example:

If the rumours about Green are true (hopefully they are not)... trade him and our 2nd round pick to Carlton for their 1st rounder. Also, we don't have to trade our top youngsters to get good picks either... but we can upgrade our picks by adding some candy to the deals. Eg. Pick #17 & Bell (just a random name) to Port Adelaide for pick #10.

When that is all said and done (assuming we finish last with a priority pick), this is the outcome:

We now have picks #1, #3-7 (Carlton's 1st rounder), #10. We lost Green and Bell and pick #18... not a bad base to start some serious rebuilding from.

I wouldn't like to see any of our players go, and I am just throwing up ideas... but sometimes you have to go through some pain, to get some gain. As I have said before, we have a good core of youngsters to build around for the future... but we still have some holes to fill before we can consider ourselves a contender. I am only young (early 20s)... but I want to see a bloody premiership in the near future!!!

Only three 'outs'? Five would be the minimum, and I imagine there'll be more than that.

It amazes me how our sniffling country member ego is bigger than his brains.

I imagine these comments are offensive to other country members.

Obviously Neitz will retire

Yze i would think would return to country football in Shepparton maybe even in a playing coach role

Holland in my opinion is finished at AFL level

I am confident Bailey will make the tough decisions at the end of the season

Aussie needs to be rewarded by being given a place in the senoir list (whatever it takes)

Someone like Cousins would only be recruited to top up a list ready to play finals

My tip would be Collingwood as they are in need of an Elite Midfielder

The Malthouse factor would aslo help

Bit like why Clarkson recruited Stewie Dew to the Hawks

Lets get a little real at the moment, we would have two maybe 3 players that we wolud get a first round pick for, Mclean, Davey and Rivers and they aren't going anywhere. We have no quick fix, but what we do have is a core of young players coming through we have done this before but IMO we have young players good enough to move forward

Bartram Frawley Garland/Warnock/Martin

Bell Rivers Cheny

Sylvia Mclean Buckley

Morton Miller Bate

Maric Newton Aussie

PJ Jones Grimes

Thats not a bad developing 18 add more than likely a top 3 pick this year and another two top 20 picks, plus if a few of last drafts picks improve to be AFL standard our future looks good.

The salary cap thing sn't that big a deal is it?

Both Ooze and Neita are on the veterans list which means half their wages go to the salary cap only. And both would be on greatly reduced pay scales anyway...

Name me 3-4 Melb players who are worth top 15 picks? (players you are willing to trade)

The one thing that could save Yze (although I think he's done) is if the club needs one more year of him to push the club to 92.5% of the salry cap instead of putting some youngsters on inflated salaries to get there. Lord knows with Holland, Neitz, White, and Yze will clear an enormous amount from the cap - upwards of $1-1.2m.

Possibly not necessary with (by my reckoning): Bate, Warnock, Bell, Frawley, Woneanmirri, Moloney, Buckley, Dunn, Petterd, Garland and possibly Valenti required to negotiate new deals.

Green and Whelan I believe are also out of contract but their new deal would be equivalent or less than their current one, so that wouldn't affect the cap space.

Anyway I think Neitz, White, Yze, Holland, Bode, C.Johnson, and Weetra will go. Bruce and Green are our only trade options, and I will only let them go for a top 15 pick. Sylvia has age on his side, otherwise...

Wonna deserves elevation and Valenti might get there as well. 4 picks (at this stage: 1, 17, 18, 34) in the national draft and 1 PSD pick.

Those calling for Carroll, Jamar, Miller, and Robertson to be moved on should be reminded that they are contracted for 2009.

Reminder: Estimations of contracts are my own and pure conjecture, intermingled with press reports. There will be mistakes.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
