Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Known as New Generation Academy (NGA).  Not sure of the boundaries.

Essentially a club gets first call to take a player in the draft on the same basis as other Academy ie based on points.  This year we have Toby Bedford available:

It was brought in by the AFL due to the advantage Qld and Sydney teams had been getting from there Academy.  Vic/WA/SA clubs are still limited to priority access to kids with in their academy's that are from a multi-cultured( one parent needs to be born overseas)or Aboriginal decent.

We are see already clubs that have access to either Father son picks or good Academy kids are trading away first round picks.  Sydney did it, North are in a great spot this year along with Collingwood, the Pies have an Academy player that would be a top 12 in this years draft plus Craig Kelly's son which is 20-25 pick, they will be a club active in pick swaps to get both these players.

Great outcome if you have good F/S or Academy players

Did you prefer the previous system where all F/S went for 3rd rounders, only NSW and Qld teams had Academy players and they went for free?

I like the point system and hope one day the introduce the same system for free agent so clubs receiving players have to give up something.  NSW and QLD teams still have an advantage as they basically have access to the best players in their allocated Zone, where as all other teams only have priority access to Aboriginal and kids of a Multi cultural decent.

My point is if you have good kids coming through your NGA or F/S you will be at a massive advantage as you can trade away you first round picks and as long as you have late picks to cover the cost of the players you are right, means you can be really aggressive through trade week knowing that you have good kids coming in.  Look at North, they have a kid coming in through NGA he is a top 10 pick, they have traded first round pick to Port for two players, once trading is done you will find they will stock pile late second round and third round picks to cover the points for him and I think the F/S they will also get.

Clubs are smart they all have FS academy's now along with NGA because they know it is a massive advantage if they have a few gems they can get.

Yes I don't really have a problem with any of that.

I think the non-football states need a leg up with scarce home grown talent and to combat go-home factor which is much worse for them.

I think F'S is a great thing and the acquisition system is fair,  Far better than the previous 2 iterations:

  1. 3rd round
  2. Pick directly after nominated draft selection

What are you suggesting as an alternative?

I prefer the current F/S system and points for the academy kids but don't like the academy system.

I think the academies should only be for NSW & Qld as previously.

They need to develop their areas and get homegrown talent in to grow the sport. Because a few good ones like Heeney and Miles  came through the Melbourne clubs started jumping up & down.

The system as it stands now is a nonsense.

For the betterment of the game it needs to be scraped.

I'm happy with the points system, all I'm saying is you have to have the players and if you do you are at a great advantage not only getting young talent but also through trading you first round pick, as mentioned they basically get the two players from Port, plus a player that would have been a top 10 pick for  pick 11 and change, massive win for North

The only time I did prefer the old system was when we grabbed JV7

GWS' access to the Riverina was a huge problem as well. Talented footy area that just needed a better development pathway but didn't need an AFL club to get all the benefit from it when it's produced legends of the game for 100 years.

John Blakey's son going to the Swans purely because his dad coaches in NSW and not in Vic/SA/WA is a joke as well.

Don't like the academies for the non Victorian and NSW clubs, although I do think more needs to be done to develop Indigenous talents who have all the skills and attributes but have a lot more going on that stops them becoming the type of professional junior it takes to get drafted these days. Not that that's true for every Indigenous kid though. The multi cultural aspect is tricky ground and seems unnecessary, the TAC clubs are very inclusive and should foster multicultural talent without the AFL clubs help.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
